I'm reading the gatekeepers (Amazon.com: The Gatekeepers: Inside the Admissions Process of a Premier College: Jacques Steinberg: Books) now and it is a reallly cool book. But is it still accurate? Obviously things like the SAT have changed, but is it still representative?

From the looks of it, the book is way too old. Copyright 2002? That was back in the day when things like the AI was used, when a perfect SAT/GPA virtually guaranteed admission into top schools. The focus on lopsided applicants and ECs and essays are much higher now.
