The George Washington University-An Incredible Place

lionswim-GW admissions is best comparable to Boston University, Boston College, NYU, and Pepperdine. It's admissions standards are somewhere in between Gtown and American. The average SAT is somewhere in the 1300s, and most admitted students rank in the top 10% of their hs class. I think the acceptance rate is about 35%-40%, give or take. So, it's relatively hard or easy depending on stats.

Also, a lot of people love to generalize GW as an "urban school." Well, duh(!), it's in the middle of DC, but that doesn't mean that that is all GWU has to offer. DC's opportunities are unique to only DC. I think that the many internships and journalism opportunites, plus the world class professors are not comparable to universities in Boston, NYC, and LA. Of course, these are great cities, especially for theatre majors, but where else can you find the pres. motor cade going by almost everyday? Where else can you find the center of the government, political media, and diplomacy?

I don't think that you can decide which schools are "better" out of BU/NYU/USC/GW. They all have great amenities and options.

I think that it's a terrible idea to go to a university solely because of the city it's located in. You go for the academics first, and the location second.

Hey, watch what you say about Fairfield County :-P

c'mon Fairfield County is just like Orange county except you take away the warm weather for the majority of the year. Both counties are filled with ritzy towns and areas such as Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Beverly Hills for OC. for Fairfield County its the same thing with Greenwich, Westport, Fairfield etc... . I wouldn't take offense to it instead be happy that I'm assuming you get to live in one of the richest counties in the entire country.

GWColonial - do you anyone who lives on the Mt Vernon campus. Also do you have any classes out there
Thanks

Mom60-yes, I do know people at the Mt. Vernon campus. Mt. Vernon housing is primarily for women, especially the Elizabeth Somer's Womens' Leadership program at Mt. Vernon. It's a terrific program for girls, has a nice scholarship program, and has smaller, more intimate classes that a women's LAC would have within GWU. Also, I do know 1 guy who lives there, but he dislikes it because the Mt. Vernon campus is much more low-key in comparison to Foggy Bottom. However, it's an awesome option for a LAC-ish type of person(coming from NYC, I don't care about size too much).

I did take an art class at Mt. Vernon, and liked it a lot. It was very intimate, and the campus is very well-kept and pretty.

I want to sign up for more classes in my trouble areas at Mt. Vernon. For spring, I am signed up for a Lit class there(not a problem area, but what the hey). I also go to Mt. Vernon all the time to utilize the soccer fields for intramurals. It's great, but I wouldn't want to live there.

unless your essays accidently said harvard... I think you're lying.

Uhh...no...I didn't even bother applying to Harvard. A big mistake I made in my apps was not specifying my race(hispanic). Since I am half caucasian, I marked caucasian without specifying that I was hispanic. I did, however realize to put that on the GWU app., the Emory one, Vandy, and Middlebury(still got rejected). I really am not lying. I have nothing to gain from lying. I would love to have gone to JHU(REALLY wanted to got there) but I simply couldn't, so I settled for GWU and am thrilled with the results. I want everyone to realize that there is life after a first-choice school, and in my case, I found GWU.

I probably went about applying completely wrong. I had no guidance WHATSOEVER. Even my GCs at my school sucked. I hadn't discovered this site yet, either. I didn't visit any of the universities I applied to, and I was so oblivious to the high prices of college that I thought that I cold just work through college to pay for it. Thank god I got a scholarship to GWU, or otherwise I wouldn't be at a university at all...

That was the biggest safety I applied to, and I had no finacial safeties. I just am so glad things worked out(and that I got deferred ED from Hopkins).

Also, I was involved in my hs, but I had no leadership positions, so that probably hurt me. My main E.C. was work(which I had to do anyways), so that hurt too.

thanks for the info on Mt Vernon. If one lives out there do you interact much socially with the rest of the student body. Also how hard is it getting back and forth. Do you know anyone who is studying hotel management and if yes now is the program

The Mt. Vernon campus is very convenient. There is a shuttle at most hours of the day which transports students back and forth. It's a 10-15 minute drive, and is located in DC, just in a more residential area. The shuttle is really convenient, and I take it all the time.

The Mt. Vernon campus is somewhat isolated from the rest of campus. The people from Mt. Vernon tend to become very close due to the small size, and move to Foggy Bottom as Sophomores. All the clubs, organizations, greek life, and the vast majority of the student body are at Foggy Bottom. The Mt. Vernon is just a great stepping stone for first-year students who still want the city opportunities of DC, but smaller and more intimate classes.

As I said, the Women's leadership program is really prestigious, and has had some notable speakers such as Condy Rice to speak to the small group of women. If you have a D, she should look into this. Here's a link to answer more of your questions.

As for the hotel management program, I have absolutely no clue how good of a program it is, and I don't know anyone majoring in it. However, I do know someone majoring in Tourism management, and he really likes it a lot. The GW school of business is really strong, especially for Public Administration, Fincance, and International Business. Here's a link to the B-school:

I am glad for you! I know a soph at GWU, who also loves it. :)

GWU has a very warm spot in my life because that's where I got my grad degrees.

Thanks NSM!

Colonial, what are the internship opportunities over there?

Any chance I can get working with a governmental agency (ala DoJ, SD, etc.,)

They're pretty awesome, and suprisingly good. The grad school for the elliot school has a feeder school into the CIA if you are interested in that. There's an abundance of internships ranging from private corporations to non-profit organizations to the dep. of edu. to The Red Cross to all the embassies and to some other cool stuff.

Yay GW!! I applied there ED 1 and was accepted there. Btw, my interviewer said that GW ranks 2nd for number of alumni appointed as US Ambassadors or foreign service ambassadors. Pretty cool fact, IMO.

I have a question though: How safe do you feel on campus?

I was actually taking a serious look at GW. Particular the Women's Leadership thing which sounded really awesome, but then when I got into Georgetown EA I got lazy and didn't want to fill out anymore applications.

Amazingly enough, I'm starting to wonder if I'll regret it or not. I probably will as I'm stuck with massive college debt. GW seemed to be A LOT more generous with aid than GU.

The crime rate in DC is pretty high, and I recommend you practicing as much safety as possible, even though Foggy Bottom is located in a very nice area. I am from NYC, so I'm perfectly accustomed to city life and precautions, but students hailing from other places need to be fairly careful(not paranoid or anything), but just watch which neighborhoods you are in, whom you are with, have a cell with you, etc. The tour guides, IMO, downplay the homeless people on campus(not a pretty campus brochure picture), but crime does exist, and I know two girls who have had their purses snatched(no biggie, they weren't hurt).

Manderz: do what you please. Congrats on your GU acceptance, that's no easy accomplishment. I would throw in an app. if I were you, but, of course, it's your choice.

There are people in many schools who want to be U.S. Senators, including me!!!

Uhh....I'll take my pepper spray then....

GW is a kick A** university!!!!! Class of '09 holla!!I want HOVA so bad next year. crosses fingersGW a cool college. I'm suprised more CC'ers don't want to go...I just wish I could bring a car...the metro sucks...
