The "give-me" classes that are harder than they seem

Which classes at your school make you roll your eyes when people say, "A free 100!" Not necessarily hard classes, just classes that people think you get a 100 for showing up for when you don't. I'm curious, because so often people on these boards will recommend people to take classes because "they're so easy" or tell people to avoid "hard" classes, based on the course levels their particular schools.

Some of my classes that are harder than they appear:
Choir- A lot of people at my school see choir as a grade booster. We have an hour and fifteen minutes minmum of timed homework a week, and at least once a week we have an oral quiz where we have to sing our part to a new song to a room of about twenty people. We're graded on accuracy. If we leave a rehearsal even five minutes early, we have to add an extra half hour to our homework.

Gym- I only managed an A in this class for one quarter the year I took it. It was graded half on ability and half on effort. In other words, if you weren't good at a range of sports and couldn't run a mile in a certain time, you couldn't get an A.

Spanish- We finish all the grammer concepts we're supposed to in one year, but we only use just over half the class time to do it in. The other half, we have geography, history, culture, or art lessons in Spanish, and they are part of our tests/ exams.

Again, not asking for hard classes at your school: just the classes that seem like give aways that actually take some kind of effort.

Choir.

We don’t ever have “homework” so to speak (except for the hardcore kids like myself who take the harder music home to help practice it), but the music we do is INCREDIBLY difficult. We’ve done several Palestrina pieces, and…darnit, I can’t remember the name of the composer for the life of me…Billings, maybe (I don’t think that was it).

Let’s see…

I don’t think it’s classes so much at my school as the SLC’s (smaller learning communities). Some kids join the one they think will be “easy”, but none of them are really that easy.

That’s also why it’s hard to do what you’re asking at my school, because the difficulty of every course depends on your SLC. Some focus more on History, some on arts, etc.

Theatre. When it’s play season, I can think of few huger time commitments (and as you reach the higher levels it is nearly always play season). Definitely put more effort into this than into my “hard” classes.

^Oh yes, I forgot.

XD it’s not really a class, but every year we put on the hugeeee Spring Musical. And our school is known for its FANTASTIC musicals (Fiddler on the Roof this year). The first month we start at 3 and go to about 6 (unless you’re a lead), and then we go until 8 (again, if you’re a lead she almost always makes you stay later).

Where is your school, HisGraceFillsMe? I live in Virginia, not far from DC.

Long Beach, California. It’s really nice because like…there’s competition for the leads, but it’s not that cut-throat nonsense that some of the “Performing Arts” schools have (We’re even better than some of those XD).

Art this year- because it’s a new teacher. Not so much a guaranteed easy A anymore (although it’s still fairly easy).
Same with my history class.

my music class, for sure. Everyone in art assumes it’s an easy 110 (you can take weighted honors music)…but, you learn so much theory, and it culminates in taking the AP exam. So, it isn’t an easy 100.

Also, my physics class which is known as “a joke” in my school…yeah, I’m not feeling the easy. The teacher is just ■■■■■■■■…

Studio In Art
I thought I was gonna get 100 on every project…
first one I got a B…

Accounting. Most people think it’s going to be easy, but you really have to pay close attention to detail (having everything properly labeled, numbers in the right columns, etc.). It’s also taught by a university teacher so it’s rather fast-paced. Some people still say it’s easy, but it’s actually difficult to get a 100 on a quiz or test. I’ve managed to do it several times, but if you miss the smallest thing it can mean big points off.

^ same, studio art was the hardest class I ever took, I only ended up with a FA of 91 in it…all my AP classes were easier (93+'s) because my art teacher was a mentally ■■■■■■■■ moron who I despise as a human being, and thank god that I never have to suffer in her presence again. I seriously came close to crying in that class, because she was such a ***.

Home & Auto Maintenance. Seriously. I’m taking it to fulfill my “practical art” (home ec/tech ed) requirement and…it’s actually difficult!

Cross Country, A for Effort=run until you feel like dying that second, then run a bit faster, if not, an A is not so attainable.

at my school, the honors history this year was supposed to be easy, but i only have like a 90 (weighted) right now. not bad, but this class was supposed to be cakewalk, and even easier then my history class last year

Culinary. People join for the food, and don’t realize they actually have to COOK for the grade. Or they don’t realize that we actually have a restaurant at our school that they have to run.

Technical Theater was such a ***** sophmore year. First semester I got an A because my teacher was happy that kids were donating to fundraisers and crap, which is basically the only way that class gets funded to pay for trips. But 2nd semester everyone stopped and he got in a bad mood. So he started giving us tests and gave us a ridiculously hard final that everyone failed. I got a C in the class and it screwed my GPA up for high school. I still can’t believe such an insignificant class could have potentially ruined my life.

I don’t think it really counts, but I was surprised by how AP Gov was. I thought it’d be an easy AP and knowing the preamble and watching the West Wing would have gotten me an A. I actually have to study.

african-american history…i really wish i could’ve taken ap bio instead :frowning: …

Wow .. that grading system would be totally socially unacceptable where I live. “Personal fitness goals” and “Fitness for life” or “Individual Kinesthetics” are the key words around here.

um, people told me precalc was a breeze. it’s not.
