The Good, Bad and Ugly: Lessons Learned

Thanks to advice from great people on this board my son has started discussions with at least 3 schools not on his radar for M10. It is good to be optimistic and positive. These are all great kids applying!

This is so great!!! Hooray!! We are in the same boat and already have an acceptance which feels great, hoping for a few more soon. I agree that applying at this time is NBD except of course for preparing for the interviews. DS was out of practice but he’s back to his old charming self again and I have to stifle my laugh in the background when I hear him interviewing because he answers everything with humility and a tinge of sarcasm—it always gets the interviewer laughing. And then they go off subject talking about this and that and 30 minutes go by and the “what’s your biggest weakness” question has yet to be asked.

Just sharing an epilogue to my son’s story. He landed and got accepted at Trinity College School in Canada with the FA he needed. Three months in: he loves it and is playing the sport he loves and has a terrific coach.

In an interesting development, one of the schools that strangely ghosted him after promising him an offer fired/turfed their admissions person and chief recruiter. Don’t know why but, given how my son’s file was handled
it falls under the category of karma.

During the process two schools (one in Canada and one in the US) completed ghosted us. No letter saying he was rejected or any communication at all DESPITE the fact we did pay an application fee. Basically, after last interview
there was no communication
at all.

Advice to parents and kids out there. Never stop trying and don’t get fixated on “brand name” schools. Find the one that wants you for who you are. And if you are playing sports, establish a connection with coach and make sure you are honest up your expectations and theirs.

I am curious what the names of the two schools?

Ridley and Trinity Pawling

TBH the schools misplaced the applicant files.

This used to happen a lot more with colleges. I had to call a college and ask what happened—I was a clear admit. And then got tardily admitted.

Everything is done digitally. There is no excuse for lost files.

Kids put their heart and souls into these applications: contact coaches/arranging interviews etc
they should get some professional courtesy in return even if it is a form reject letter.

It is so great to hear that your son landed in the right place for him and is thriving!

Fwiw, it’s not uncommon, BS or college, to get lots of love until the app is submitted then for everything to get quiet. It may feel like ghosting but it may be policy. Admissions may not want a coach chasing a kid they aren’t going to admit. Or for word to get out that one group of applicants, possibly athletes, ate being courted while others, mathletes, musicians, and legacies, are “ignored”.

It’s rarely personal!

But I love the story of a kid who has clearly landed in the right place. Happy ending. Thanks for sharing, @Canuckdad !

I didn’t take it as personal but lacking professionalism that you would expect for a school charging $60K.

If you apply, paid the fee and are interviewed, you should get an email saying “rejected” or else it is just a money grab to get the application fee which for some schools it probably is.
