Ok,
WSU, TAMU, UPS, Linfield, Willamatte, UW, Whitman, Loyola , Santa Clara, Norte Dame, … Can I get a package deal? This would be so funny at the shower.
That’s a lot of onesies, dragonmom. You’re going to have to stay a few weeks.
I think it’s my dream baby gift. Dreaming on…
I am trying to think up thoughtful gifts for baby and mama that aren’t store bought. Unfortunately, I’m not very crafty. I feel like I should be knitting or something, but that is never going to happen. Even before our bag a day thread, I had tossed my one and only unsuccessful knitting project.
I was thinking a photo album compilation of some sort but does anyone even want such an old fashioned space taker upper any more? Maybe some kind of simple family history?
My mds is having a baby. He is attending grad school where yds and his gf graduated from. The two of them have gone a bit nuts getting the baby stuff from the school. Really sweet and cute. So far we have a onesies, a jumpsuit, socks and a bib.
Alh - congrats!
You could needlepoint something for baby’s room - I needlepointed a Peter Rabbit scene for my niece (before knowing the gender). It’s easy enough to do and would be a nice keepsake. it doesn’t require the skill of knitting.
Re family history, I know you know a lot about your genealogy. Here is an idea that you could adapt to your situation. I had this done by a family friend who is artistic / skilled in this area. I commissioned a big decorative plate. Name of baby girl. date of birth and some decoration in the middle. Then, starting at 12 o’clock and moving clockwise, the name and DOB of her mother (my sister), our mother, our maternal grandmother, and so forth. I got back to 1693 which was as far back as I had traced my pure maternal side. It was the kind of plate that you could get in a make-your-own-pottery store. It was a neat way to show that she was part of a link of strong women throughout the years.
^^Those are really lovely ideas. Thank you.
I am hoping for a grandbaby within the next 5 years; DD married, DS soon to be married! I am actually fine with the wait, because with the cost of good childcare and the dearth of excellent baby care, I want to be there to help out with baby - which means being RETIRED!!!
I was invited to D’s appointment today and we saw the tiny embryo/fetus via ultrasound. ‘Baby’ is in the right place and has a strong heartbeat. Seven more months until I can hold him or her. I’m in love!
@alh There’s a woman here in Ontario who does custom made cotton baby blankets, knitted, with the name knitted into it. They’re beautiful. My guess is that she isn’t the only one in North America doing that. Maybe you could google and find someone close to you?
I’m busy making baby quilts for friends and family, which keeps me happy. No grandchildren for me any time soon, I fear.
I could be a grandparent, or even a great grandparen given my age and ages of my kids. But they have opted for different lives at this time. None have given any indication of having children any time soon.
My kids are very different in every aspect of what some of your your children do. They are all in their mid to late 20’s, ( S. turning 30 in Sept) not married and not engaged. Just not the meet person in twenties and get married type
I would love to have grandchildren
I did not have to move to the west coast. My kids are moving back to the east coast before their child is born. This is a very good move for them in all respects. It is a very good move for all the grandparents, in all respects.
Everyone is relieved no property was purchased in SF. All the grandparents are busy looking at NE real estate.
@alh, congrats. When your kids move to the NE, can you tell them to get in touch with my son, and tell my son to move back to the west coast. I would appreciate it.
So now…are you considering a move north?
My husband predicts if we stay put, they’ll get closer and closer. We’ll see. Kids have already said now they will be close enough to easily fly in the for weekend. Of course, they have never yet traveled with an infant.
I hope your son moves back. There are a couple of recent job openings of which I’m aware.
@ahl, Great news! I’m doing a happy dance for you!
@dstark, Fingers crossed that your son will find his way back to the west coast.
D and SIL are settled here. I am grateful. S is here for now, but I am not sure that is permanent. I hope so.
My DS#1 and his wife recently returned from a very long vacation. They have been systematically marking things off their bucket list for the eventual day when they will be busy with kids. That said, they visited with his wife’s sis/BIL and their 2 young kids both before the trip and after, and found that more exhausting than the hiking and biking they did. Sigh… So I wait…
Our grandson (first grandchild) arrived Sept. 9th and he is perfectly healthy and beautiful. I’m over the moon. That little face. Those little hands and feet. ::::::::::sigh:::::::
^^^Congratulations! You are going to love being a grandparent. Our granddaughter #2 is due next week!
@VaBluebird Congratulation! Do you have your grandmother name yet? My DIL is not pregnant yet, but her mother and I are waiting for the good news
