do you consider head chef to be a Leadership role? like the ones UCSD wants… it isnt VP or Pres, but Head Chef is just as important…and it is leadership. i guess this would be considered major leadership or minor… im unsure how to place this on the point system… i have given 300 but im not too sure…
A. YOU ARE WORRYING TOO MUCH. STOP IT.

what about Jobs… the UCSD google spreadsheet doesnt give jobs, but the other scoring guide does…/ (the second one that is in quotes is from 2005, so im not too sure)
A. I THINK THE HOURS YOU HAVE WORKED SO FAR IN YOUR PAID JOB ARE ADDED TO YOUR VOLUNTEER HOURS TO GET YOU YOUR POINT TOTAL. FOR EXAMPLE IF YOU STARTED WORKING 15 HR/WEEK OR 60 HR./MONTH BACK IN SEPTEMBER, AT THE END OF NOVEMBER YOU WOULD HAVE 180 HOURS. PLUS LETS SAY 20 RANDOM VOLUNTEER HOURS SOMEPLACE WOULD GIVE YOU 200+ FOR THE FULL 300. BUT IM NOT 100% SURE THEY DO IT THIS WAY. THIS IS JUST MY GUESS.

back to leadership: what if you have one major, and one minor… /
A. AGAIN YOU ARE WORRYING TOO MUCH. I USED TO BE LIKE YOU UNTIL I RELEALIZED THAT EVEN A CONSERVATIVE POINTS TOTAL WOULD GRANT ME ADMISSION TO UCSD.

PS- I am only writing in caps in order to differentiate between your questions and my answers.

I would be suprised if the points needed for admission would exceed 7900 this let alone 8000. You should be fine.

As for the PDF you showed me. Don’t worry about that. All it is showing is how many A-G courses people have completed. Dont put too much thought into it. I would ignore it and just focus on the points system that they publish. If you have 7900-8000 it doesnt matter how low your percantages are in some regions.
YOU NEED 40+ A-G SEMESTERS TO GET 300 POINTS.

FutureENTSurgeon
lol! thanks i understood
my conservative points are 7854-8004!
(but its leaning towards the 8004, because i gave myself 150 points for leadership!)
thanks for your help… hope to see you at UCSD…

but till one question:
if you are above the total point cut off… are you in UCSD or are u shuffled for admission?

1- I pretty sure you would get half credit (250) for that because you only get the full 500 if the bad event happened to you not your family member.

2- I think you still would gets points for being president of a club eventhough you aren’t president anymore.

spatel23:

1- The only other academic factors I could think of is coming from a Low Performing high school (Like me) I gave myself 300 points for this because I know for a fact my school is program improvement and considered low performing.

2- My conservative is based on the Whole Total of Academic and Non Academic factors. The google docs file you have shown me has actually changed my estimate just a little.

Conservative- 7890 (It was 7940)
Reasonable- 8240 (It was 8340)
Nevertheless, I still should be in great shape to get accepted. Now the only problem is whether I have enough points to make it into the Division of Biology or are they just going to admit as undeclared.

so FutureNTSurgeon i just did it conservatively and i got 8004-- im guessing thats ok shape? (hope the 4 points over doesn’t kill me!)

but do you think that there are additional factors they look at? you know some special things not mentioned on the site? it is possible i guess.

also i had a question about the essays.
i read on some thread that UCSD people dont care about your essay and scan it for points and thats all… i know other UC’s such as UCB and UCLA read it, however are there chances that UCSD people might actually consider the essay as significant rather than points?

now i know my EC’s are good, but how much of that does it matter at UCSD? their point system really baffles me…i mean shouldn’t EC’s and jobs and sports help somewhat at least? i still believe that they are hiding some things so we dont take advantage of their system.

what i mean by this is suppose (and im hoping) that they give points for having a job… if they publish this on their website people might go out and put jobs for mere points…

i really need to stop worrying-- wish i was a good “standardized test taker” hahaha

1- You are in good shape. Stop worrying about it and stop wishing you could change something because they fact is there is little you can do at this point.

2- I honestly dont believe they consider any other academic factors. I mean what reason do they have to lie? There isn’t one. No one has forced them to publish their points scale.

3- UCSD does read essays but to the extent of UCLA and UCB. That being said you cant just use essay section to list bullet points of info that will help your admission. What I’m trying to say is that your essays for UCSD have to be somewhat decent. My advice is write the best essay you can. That way you have no regrets.

4- EC’s matter to UCSD as they account for a maximum of 1200 points. Which is around 15% of the around 7800 you need to get in. The purpose of EC’s in my opinion is to not give a person with 1600 SAT a big boost to get into UCSD but to give a person with 1800 SAT the little boost he/she needs to get accepted.

Leadership= 300
Special talents/awards/achivements= 300
community and volunteer service= 300
Participation in academic development program= 300
Total= 1200

Honestly, you’re splitting hairs right now. Stop worrying about what to put and what not to put in. Just put in as much as you can and hope for the best.
