The Guide to a Five: AP World History

The Guide to a Five: World History

This is a thread for those taking a class in AP World History. I took the AP World exam in May 2011 and am confident I will get a five. Basically, I will outline a study plan from September through May to help you get a 5 on the AP World exam as well.

Hints and Tips:

• No matter how boring or long your readings are, do them- In my class, we had 5-8 page reading assignments nightly with a quiz the next day. Doing the reading will not only increase your knowledge in world history, but also will reduce the amount of studying you will need to put in later.

• Take notes on your nightly readings- This will greatly reduce the amount of time you will need to study for your class tests and the AP test. Instead of trying to read the entire chapter the night before your class test on World War 2, it would be much easier to review the notes you took on the readings. Also, if you have quizzes everyday on the readings, a quick read of your notes right before the quiz can’t hurt.

• Buy a review book well before the AP- The review book has many questions that will help you in class and for the AP. I recommend Princeton Review’s rendition of the World History review book.

Now we will fast forward to May

• Take a practice test and review it.

• Read the Review book in May- Starting May 1st, read a chapter or two out of the review book every night. Skip the chapters on test taking tips and essay rubrics. Your goal should be to read the book 2-3 times through before the test.

• Take a practice test after your 2nd or 3rd read through the book. Review all the concepts you are weak in.

• The night before the test, review the essay rubrics and test taking strategies. Memorize the rubrics and write your essays to the rubric and even if you don’t really know the material tested on the essay, you’ll still get a score that will keep you in the running for a five.

• If necessary, don’t be afraid to cram the night before the AP. Just make sure you get 6 hours of sleep or more and eat breakfast. There is nothing worse than getting hungry right before the essays.
