The hardest ACT section is...?

Hmm, I’d say science, I’m not super bad at it (32) but it’s my lowest :/. I think it’s funny how I got that though! I pretty much just eyeballed everything and went with intuition and didn’t read a thing! I still had like 10 minutes left over hahaha!

If your going to bubble in smiley faces on any section, make it science  lol

For me it was reading. I think Math, English, and Science are all much easier to improve through practice, learning concepts (especially in Math and English), and learning test taking tricks (especially in Science). Reading, I think less so. Reading comprehension/ability to retain is more of a gift, I think.

SCIENCE!!! Yet, I still aspire to be a doctor

The hardest section on the ACT is definietly reading. It would be the easiest if we had like 5-10 more minutes…

I found the math section to be the hardest, but my calculator stopped working right in the beginning of it. I spent the first 5 mins trying to get it to work and then had to rush through. It doesn’t help that the hardest problems are at the end…

I’m surprised so many people said science. It doesn’t require much knowledge of science at all, it’s 95% reading charts and graphs. Science and reading were very easy for me but math was not.

science fo sho
i got math 35, english 35, reading 34
science 28

i don’t have much common sense

Reading is by far the hardest.

Math was my lowest, thus hardest for me.

I’ve taken one practice test with no prep yet (planning on getting books and studying for maths HARD)
English 35
CR 35
Science 31 (careless mistakes, it really wasn’t too difficult, you don’t seem to need to know much, all comprehension, I’m confident I can get a 34-36)
Maths- too scared to take it:(

February scores:

English: 35
Math: 31
Reading: 35
Science: 35

Definitely math… :(

The general consensus seems to be that English is the easiest, but we seem to be split about the other sections. My view:
Reading is easy if you are a fast reader and can interpret quickly.
Math is easy if you know the concepts and are mathmatically inclined.
Science is easy if you can interpret quickly and are logical.

As an ACT/SAT tutor, I agree with the comments made by Advantagious a few pages back. Of the four sections on the ACT (English, Math, Reading Comprehension, and Science), I find the easiest section to boost quickly is the English section (usage and rhetorical skills). The next easiest section to boost is math, though it takes longer to get improvement because the test covers such a wide variety of math concepts (everything through the end of 11th grade math). Doing well in the science section has less to do with what you know about science than about using the right strategy when taking the test (you should practice quickly reading charts and graphs) and becoming familiar with the types of questions asked on this section of the test. The science section of the test has 7 passages with a tight 35 minute time limit. There are strategies that help the student get as much done as possible in that amount of time. The hardest section to tutor is the reading comprehension section. The students that do well in this section are often lifelong readers. However, it is possible to help students improve in this section too, by teaching them how “trap answers” are structured, and by teaching them how to read more actively. You can substantially improve your score by taking a number of practice tests; you don’t have to have a tutor. The Real ACT Prep Guide is the only book I recommend using. It is put out by ACT.org, the makers of the ACT, and the practice tests in this book are actual, retired ACT tests. The answer explanations in the book are very well done. Just practice in bits and pieces initially. If you can only find 15 minutes here or there, that’s still fine. The key is to familiarize yourself with each of the sections as much as possible. If time allows, take some timed sections so you can make sure you’ve got your pacing optimized before sitting for the actual test.

I think my hardest two are math and science. They are equally difficult for me. I have problems with learning in math, so I only took Algebra courses all through high school. As you know, in the act, you are tested in Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry. I only took one out of the three classes you will be tested on for the act. So you could imagine my struggle. And science is just stupid and difficult. Seriously, there is no point in that test. They should take it out.

The easiest by far is math. The hardest for me would be reading. I cannot read fast and always end up guessing on five or so questions.

hazelheart how did you get your score to jump so high…I am struggling with the reading on the ACT.

I took an ACT practice test from the " The Real ACT Prep Guide" (Red Book) without timing myself and got a 35. I realized ACT is really easy but the time kills scores

Science test for me… completely dragged down my score and really below average compared to my reading and math scores. My school doesn’t have great science teachers, so it was a struggle.

squirelly - I don’t see how you can pin the blame on science teachers when only a few of the science questions actually require prior knowledge.

Math. For me at least. I cannot break the 31 although I never leave out any questions or knowingly guess.

Reading. It was 9 points worse than my second worse section and 12 points worse than my other 2.
