The hardest book you have had the (dis)pleasure of reading?

I have to agree, though, about the criticism of Pride and Prejudice. The story is really obnoxious and fairy-tale -like, the characters just aren't real.

I've never read it, but that's the impression I got. It's like, "Oh, I have to say something witty every two syllables or the readers will see me as completely fake."

Mouse 10 char.

Now that I think about it, the Tao te Ching was pretty hard, too. So was Murder in the Cathedral. But nothing touches Sir Gawain.

Pride and Prejudice (just terrible!)
Notes From Underground (while I did like it and it was the first "existential" novel I read, I felt that a lot of Dostoevsky's points were quite convoluted)

Oh, I bought this copy of Le Morte d'Arthur (sp?). Didn't realize the original spellings were preserved... And all the names are in blackletter. Lol.

Great Expectations.

A Clockwork Orange.
It's a good book, it's just that it's written in a weird English/Russian slang that you have to learn as you read it.

Les Miserables.
I heard it was a good musical, but reading the unabridged version is completely boring!

I was going to write a book report on The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens. I obviously changed my book as quickly as possible. You thought the Scarlet Letter rambled about nothing....

Their Eyes Were Watching God
All Quiet on the Western Front
Those are just a couple of the books that I've hated reading in English.

I didn't really like All Quiet on the Western Front at first... but then I got into it, the whole kill or be killed mentality when he confronted the french soldier. That was intense.

Im casting another vote for The Scarlet Letter. That book is garbage.

...
I would just like to say, thank you to everyone in this thread who does not like Pride and Prejudice. For a while there, I was wondering if something was wrong with me. (Everyone I told thought I was insane too.)

Okay, has anyone ever read or attempted to read Silent Travelers? Ughx10. [This brings back memories, haha.]

i thought scarlet letter wasnt that bad
and les mis was pretty interesting but sometimes victor hugo just loved to hear himself talk (or watch himself write? lol)
their eyes we're watching god was just blehhhh
great expectations just dragged on and on
we just read crime and punishment for AP lit. that title is soo misleading lol. doesnt sound that interesting -.-

Ethan Frome is pretty bad and depressing. Reminiscent of Wuthering Heights.

UGH ethan frome.
i forgot about that because it was in 8th grade but
horrible

is anyone who (unfortunately) read Their Eyes Were Watching God still up? i have a question about my project.

Heart of Darkness. There have definitely been others but that book's the most recent.

I read Crime and Punishment too but I didn't think it was that bad.

Notes from Underground was really good too. I think it's one of my favorite books now.

I tried reading "As I Lay Dying" by William Faulkner in 9th grade then miserably failed and ended up lurking in Sparknotes for analysis.

add The Great Gatsby to that list

As I Lay Dying was hard at the beginning but made much more sense as it progressed, and I ended up really liking it. However, I hear that The Sound and the Fury is hard all the way through.
