The Harvard Waitlist Waiting Room 2014 Thread

Haha, well spoken qizixite. And it’s funny, even as I was typing I was thinking “as frustrating as any political debate is, it’s nice to be frustrated over something besides the wait list for once” lol. Pretty sure that is why I stayed up until 3 am watching BBC last thursday to monitor British election results haha

gcall, I sympathize! and I too was watching the UK election results coming in. What’s your opinion about proportional representation in the UK Parliament? I can’t decide whether it would be good for the country as a whole or allow for sudden public opinion, which the parliament is supposed to bypass, to affect UK laws (like the differences between the Senate and the House of Representatives).

I feel kind of bad for the liberal democrats even though I think the entire political system in the UK is somewhat strange.

And how about those ribbons the candidates wore at the presentation of the winner? It felt like the podium after a race.

@Boggler,

I guess it’s safe to assume that U.S. history is NOT your area of specialty? Here’s a short reading list of 20th Century American history. (if you need more, I can cite HUNDREDS)

As for Texas, both my parents were born and raised in Texas …

Please let that be all.

Plumazul, congrats on your 16^2 post!

Seriously, anyone willing to explain the UK political system?

I suggest that you read this article. I think I posted the link before but I find myself referring back to it every once in a while for the most up-to-date information about some college’s yields; [News: The Early Word on Yield - Inside Higher Ed](http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2010/05/06/yield)

@qizixite, gcall,

I’ll drop it now, but this is NOT the first time cicero has made such statements, … I ignored them the other times, I could ignore them no more. “over-reacting”? I don’t think so …

“If you didn’t have the resources to be educated enough to be able to go to a top tier school, then you shouldn’t be getting in solely on non-academic qualities.”

This is a disgusting statement and in a just society should not be left unchallenged.

I must go to bed now since I have two APs tomorrow (bio, physics C) … good luck to everyone …

good luck on your APs Plumazul! Thank you,

-Optimism!

Actually, plumazul, I know quite a bit about American history. My reference to the 19th century was to the CSA, not racism in general. And your last reference was to the 60s, which was this nation’s biggest steps towards CRs we’ve ever had, but that was 50 years ago. I agree racism still exists, though I think it’s very ignorant to make that assumption about the entire South today, which for the overwhelming majority is no less racist than any other region of the country. Just don’t insult a region of the country because of its history (including CA with asians and the NE with irish, immigrants, and Catholics).

And thanks for the trivia on your parents.

Look I disagree with some people about AA but I think its a pretty misunderstood topic by the general public. Could I ask a question though? What exactly states AA? Its not a law, is it? If it was, how could it be enforced? Isn’t it just University policy? So if they chose not to they wouldn’t have to do it?

And now I must drop it (I just couldn’t let that last bit go unchallenged).

If everyone cannot let the last comment go unchallenged then the argument will go on. Thank you to those who have moved on. I now post a list of waitlistees in the hopes of providing a transition toward more worthwhile topics.

Welcome! I’m putting college of matriculation in brackets. Please state your own and I’ll add it!

If your name is in bold PLEASE come out and say hi so we can confirm that you are remaining on the waitlist! Thanks!

Updated with wonderful lurkers. More people should come out and join us! (108 people so far; 86 for sure-22 unknown)

@qizixite: I am undecided on the UK political system. But from what I know of it, I think switching to the proportional system would have the same set backs there that it would here, but on an even grander scale since they aren’t subdivided into states like we are. Mainly, the problem becomes that switching to a proportional system will completely undermine constituencies. Any single politician will no longer be directly accountable to a district, and districts will no longer have a directly elected official acting as their voice in goverment. Although the first-past-the-post method is unfair to third parties, a proportional system would give far too much power to the parties, allowing them to select which candidates to “represent” people in parliament. There would be no instances of voters being able to write/petition their local congressman (or parliament member in the UK), as the whole concept of a local congressman would be gone.

I agree with you on the ribbons though. They were just plain odd. And it took forever to get used to the color scheme they used. Conservatives as blue? Completely baffled me for a while. Eventually got accustomed to it though. And then the next day I watched American networks and had to switch back lol

But not it is 12:25, so I should probably head off to bed–though no APs for me tomorrow, I do have a major day of cramming for ap chemistry ahead of me.

I just took Comparative which although it was ridiculously superficial has bequeathed to me a mildly comprehensive understanding of UK government!

Wild swings of public opinion is somewhat of an oxymoron in the UK, or at least according to the scholarly articles we read on the UK in class. The UK has a political culture that rests on many hundreds of years of trial and error as the UK developed into a democracy over a massive amount of time relative to other democracies of the world- US for example. and because of that they have a relatively temperate political climate. For example, from WWII to lets say thatcher, was an era of good feelings where most of the parties were indistinguishable on a policy level, and everyone was basically just worried about the welfare state.

this is obviously an oversimplification but political culture is a subjective nebulous thing.

How many were on the CC waitlist for 2013? I know we have already outdone them with respect to participation (i.e. number of posts).

haha i put an exclamation mark. unintended but maybe it was a freudian slip though…

Boggler: They had 145 for sure with a possible 4 more on May 30th.

In terms of the UK political system. I can’t think of a sophisticated response right now, but I will in the morning. Signing off!

-Optimism!

@cicero_oratore - I’m not sure if I would choose Harvard over Yale/Penn; I would really have to think about it. Harvard and Yale were originally my first choices, but now I feel somewhat attached to Penn and am overall very confused (I will tell Princeton though that I don’t want to remain on their waitlist).
@HHopeful2 - I wrote Yale a letter after deferral (I originally applied SCEA and was deferred, waitlisted, and then finally accepted) about all my extra-curricular updates, but after I was waitlisted I only sent them a two sentence blurb informing them that I received the National Merit 2500 Scholarship.

Goal for today - relearn all of AP chemistry. This should be fun. I’m hoping Crimson publishes the yield today, so amidst all of my tedious studying I’ll have something to look forward to!

Don’t get your hopes up about the article until it is actually out. Sigh.

-Optimism
