Does anybody know anything about The Hill School in Pottstown, PA? What is the atmosphere like? How are the people? What do they specialize in?

I'm considering it for 2nd round applications.

Also, does anybody know about Kent in Kent, CT? Like if they take late apps, etc
^I'm leaning more towards Kent. Hill seems kind of really formal :P

Kent has a really beautiful campus. You might also try Peddie. They actually have rolling admissions. Other places you might think about are Episcopal, Mercersburg and Emma Willard (girls school). You could also take one more year and try to upgrade that math SSAT.

I know for a fact that the Hill School is in a slight crisis with money, at the moment. They have a limited financial aid budget. If you are not appling for fa, and you pretty good stats your good to go, because its actually becoming a problem enrolling people in because they need more people who are going to pay fully. I do not know much about Kent, sorry.

I went to the Tennis Camp at Kent a few years ago and toured last year. I remember it had a very large and beautiful campus as well as very welcoming people, the students and faculty all greeted me when I was on my tour. They had this really unique tradition where the graduating class would hike up the mountains on campus and engrave their names on this rock. I ended up turning down the admission mostly because they didn’t have track. I mean jeez, 1200 acres can’t they stick a track somewhere on campus lol…

Edit: Also really consider Loomis, we have a smart casual dress code and we do rolling admissions (was admitted in the second round lol)

I agree with the money crisis thing about The Hill. It’s true. The best way to learn which schools have late/rolling admission is to call admission offices.

We know two different families that have kids at Kent and both are very happy. Great athletics, great facilities. Not sure about academics.

Hill School:
From their website: Endowment: $91,228,032 (as of June 30, 2009)
From wiki: In 2007, The Hill’s endowment totaled $145 million.

Errr… Is that a ~ 40% loss? :-o

ok, so no hill yes kent…
i was already considering emma and loomis. i’m not to sure about lc though b/c it has a lower acc. rate…

The 145mil on a wiki might not have been correct. Even if it is correct, Hill’s endowment at $91mil is still much higher than Kent’s endowment, and Hill has fewer students. I think all the schools had to respond to endowment decreases in some manner, so I question why Hill should be singled out. Sometimes endowment $s can be deceiving because schools can borrow against endowment. This can precipitate a crisis if they need more collateral.

Anyway, if you are interested in Hill, then you should pursue that interest. Most schools will say they increased the financial aid budget, but often this was done to protect current students who might need more and to meet tuition increases.

My impression is that Hill is a formal and traditional school.

I don’t know that Hill is much more formal than Kent. (Hill has very frequent sit-downs, but Kent has chapel.)

We looked at both schools. Son ultimately decided not to apply to Hill and was accepted at Kent with FA. Hill just didn’t “feel right” for him and that’s the only reason he didn’t apply. It’s a great school.

Kent is beautiful and I think it has a lot to offer both the ambitious, hard-working type as well as the just really smart kid. The surrounding town of Kent is looked at as part of the campus and I would feel fine with my son ambling across the bridge to mill about in town - not something I can say about Pottstown.

As for late apps: last year there was a father whose son ended up at Kent post-April. But they were FP and from the south (Florida, I believe?). After April 10th, you should get on the phone and ask if they have any FA available for late apps, first thing.

so i should call after 4/10? when would be the earliest that I should call?

I’d suggest you call now. Ask them if there’s a possibility of accepting a late applicant who needs FA. The answer will probably be “maybe.” (That’s about all they can say before April 10.) Then ask how soon you should get your application in - should you wait 'til 4/10 or send it now? My guess, based on what other schools have told me, is that they’ll suggest you send it now. That way they will already have looked at it by the time April 10 rolls around.

ok thanks, that’s what i was going to do but i wanted to make sure :)

Heres my list for now(considering):
Emma Willard
Kent
Loomis?
Hill*
Berkshire[i started applying there but never filled out the app]
suffield[same^]
Pomfret?

any other suggestions or comments on those schools?

Emma- yes.
Kent- yes.
Loomis-err.
Hill-no.
Berkshire- yes
pomfret-never heard of it.
suffield- never hear of it

preppy- i believe you’ve read my mind. pomfret 's’in NW CT and Suffield is near the MA border in CT

I don’t know what their position is on financial aid after March 10th, but you can call Blair Academy to find out if it is possible. It’s a great school!

Rad – Do you have any special athletic or artistic talents? You might post if you do. Someone might know if a school is looking for a particular position or instrument.

You might consider some schools that place you in the top 25% of applicants. Perhaps that is true for Suffield and Pomfret, but I don’t know. If you are considering the girls’ schools, you might try Westover and Miss Porters School along with EWS.

If you are friendly with your interviewer at NMH, you might ask that person to suggest schools to you.

" If you are friendly with your interviewer at NMH, you might ask that person to suggest schools to you. "

yes well THAT might not get me back off the wait list! flaw in the design…

BUT I’m really into the arts and humanities
I sent some schools samples of my photography and i also do painting and drawing.
I play 3 sports: Soccer(5 years) Cross Country (2 year) Track(1 year)(not doing it this yr- my knees are bummed out and my doctor told me to take the season off)

Kent does have a nice town, as someone said before and had a welcoming atmosphere when i visited there.

rad- i suggest miss porter or westover school there all girls

Hey I actually just got into Hill, Kent, Berkshire, and most likely Blair. Berkshire was my favorite, and Kent was my least. I felt the outside of Kent was beautiful but the inside of the buildings wear very run down. If you are not catholic you might feel uncomfortable at Kent. The Hill school is having a money issue but it is the school that would watch you and keep you on track along with Berkshire and Blair. If I was you I would also consider Blair
