@ani: Sounds like a good idea. You lead the way.

PS: Maybe we should do this before the decisions are out.

@ani: Sounds like a good idea. You lead the way.

PS: Maybe we should do this before the decisions are out.

Before decisions? Why? I actually thought we could make something like the silverturtle guide. And if the others didn’t make the thread, so what? We should lead the way :P

OH YES NOW I REMEMBER.

At my Penn interview:
Interviewer “Why Penn?”
I spoke for about 5-6 mins about course flexibility, etc etc.
Interviewer: “Okay so is Penn your first choice?”
Me: Yes,it is.
Interviewer: Which other colleges did you apply to?
Me: Gave 4-5 names
Interviewer: Wait. You said that you were gonna do computer science, right? Then why is PENN your first choice for Computer Science? I mean… Shouldn’t it be Berkeley or something? I’d suggest that if you do get into Berkeley or CMU, you should go there since its better for computer science.
Me: …
I was stumped. Well I spoke a bit about how its more flexible to pursue intellectual passions and whatnot.

Has anyone had a similar incident? He was a great person to talk to but him saying that I should go to an engineering school for computer science made me go w t f.

^My Penn interviewer asked me why I’m even going to college (although she said I should continue sports). Beat that.
Plus I’m not even that good that I’d make it a career. Just average. And my doctor’s told me it’s not good because of my height. I have to bend more. Why didn’t I remember all this then? I just mumbled some stuff about recreational activities.

Penn must have a requirement for their interviewers to be nuts.
They did. That’s the point. Many old TiTers (TiT 15 or something I am sure of) did it already…

They did? Link me?

^I remember seeing atleast one. That was when I gave up the idea of creating one. The thread seemed to have died out (wasn’t stickied), and I don’t know where it is right now, and ani, I might be jobless but not enough to go scouting every user in every TiT to search it out for you. I have done enough TiT reading already ;).

I think if you do one now, you should ask the Mod to sticky it for you. Or maybe do one for all international students in the International Students forum. We all go through the same stuff.

technut start a series on this entire college admissions process. It’s on his blog. It has som 7-8 articles I think.

Ani, I am totally up for the admissions thread idea. That was one of the things that sparked off my idea for a blog. I was going to talk about how to deal with decisions, specifically rejections. It was mostly to be based on personal anecdotes.
And LOL at the interviews. You seriously are the interview girl. I wish I could contribute to that thread, but I’ve only had two and they were both really good (at least for me), so yes.

Just a question to you people who are quite brilliant in judging candidates for US COlleges.

I have a friend with SAT 2300 SAT IIs at high 700s but NO ECS! Ok grades (<85% in CBSE), OK essays…and I guess ok recommendations. What are his chances at HYPDS? Is there any chance that he can get into the bests WITH FInancial Aid.

Just a query BTW.

I WAS IN DESPERATE NEED OF THIS THREAD. Till Harvard decisions come out, I am 1. Unable to breathe. 2. Unable to sleep. 3. Unable to laugh freely. 4. Unable to talk about ANYTHING except college. Unable to behave normal.

People, I got waitlisted at UChicago too! Like someone else said above (way, way above), it is a gazillion times better than getting rejected! My score: 2 acceptances (UCLA, UCSD), 1 waitlist (UChic), 1 rejection (MIT). Needless to say, I am very happy with the way this is turning out. :)

Waiting for Berkeley and UCD next… then, BAM BAM BAM. All the Ivies together.

Btw, perfectpixie, your birthday totally made the last thread close down. You should not have been born! Hahahahahahah! Kidding. How are you, technut? And everyone else?

Ok, that was very self centred of me. :). I want to get to know more of you! I am from Jaipur. Where are you all from?

Congratulations collegebeckons! I am from Bangalore and Hong Kong, but maybe we should move this personal conversation to the thread in the CC Cafe so as to not risk this one getting closed.

How many more decisions are you waiting for? I am waiting for EIGHT more.

@ahoy- Dude honestly over the past week i Have had to change my opinion about SAT scores completely. They don’t mean anything after a point. Its the rest of your application that sets you apart. For instance Mit this time rejected everyone at my city except one and this dude had like a 2150 Sat , while me (2290) and another friend with 2360 both significantly higher scores were rejected. So without something really different its going to be extremely tough.

@all- In your opinion what do you think actually sets an applicant apart? What kind of an extra curricular would be considered significant?

Hey Putturani! I am waiting for, (Barney Stinson style), WAIT FOR IT, 11 colleges!!
I applied to 15… and I still that that was too few. :).
I am waiting for:
Harvard (the Bade Baba ji)
Princeton
Yale
Columbia
Dartmouth
Cornell
CMU
UCB
UCD
Amherst
Stanford

!!!

^ 6 decisions on the 31st! best of luck. :)

I confirm that my name wasn’t on the Berkeley directory as Aniruddh said.
However, you must know that I am not as good of a applicant as he made me to be I am not even a school prefect so that shows how average I am.
Also, I had faxed Berkeley my withdrawal and they confirmed that they received it but wanted extra assurance and wanted me to to post a signed copy to them. Which I didn’t because postage costs a lot and i didn’t see the need. BTW, I withdrew cuz I got into Penn ED.
So I guess Berkeley won’t accept me because they know that I won’t come.

Also In regards to your penn interviewer Ani. He has a point. Come to Penn only if you have Wall Street ambitions like me or want to do Mechanical/Bio engineering. My penn interviewer asked me why I put SEAS as my back up for M&T. I answered because Maths and Physics is my passion and I believe at the undergraduate level you should study what you love. However, you have to make a judicious choice towards your future. For me thats an MBA (form Penn of course). Undergraduate studies are just a formality. So hes like I did a smart thing by not choosing wharton as an undergraduate business degree is inferior as compared to an MBA and there is no point in doing both.

SO just do what you like and do it in a place that will aid your post grad. I needed Penn’s open curriculum and widely available dual degree programs (not necessarily M&T, just a Business+Engineering major. Yes there is such a thing )

Also is there any Indian Penn EDer on this thread?? I was contacted by my International mentor. I was taken aback by some of the stuff she said. I just want to confirm it with as many people as possible. The people who I know in real life( i.e. Penn ed ones) didnt get that piece of info. Its pretty interesting.

*** i read somewhere about Wesleyan offering interviews in Delhi! when did this happen? was it on a request basis?

Hey Chelsearox!
how have you been???

Ive been good.
I was inactive because of Chemistry (God, I hate that subject!!)

Also, everyone just call me Karan. This ‘chelsearox’ business seems pretentious :)

Thank you, mylife99. Best of luck to you too. :). Are you done with your boards?

:). Hey karan!
