agreed (10 chaR)

kafkareborn,
you have absolutely no idea about how hotchkiss actually runs
you been here for a total of what, 5 months?
i dont think a new upper mid should be the one running this type of thread..

He might be getting credit for some English project or something you don't know about though:)

Kafkadied... wow... calm down buddy.

I guess kafkareborn will be MIA for awhile, running laps around the golf course?

kafkadied I don't understand your odd hatred for kafkaborn to the point you would make your username a sardonic remark towards someone who's alleviating anxiety from prospective applicants...

I think he is gone.

My daughter is now a senior at Hotchkiss so I might be able to answer some questions about the school or the process.

Parentalview: How is the art program at Hotchkiss? Is there an emphasis on visual or performing arts? And how is the Music Program?

What's the dress code and how strictly is it enforced?

Thanks!

Ha, I found this quite amusing. Both Harvard's top female and male athletes are Hotchkiss alums.

The amazing thing is one of our swimmers now broke Geoff's old records at New England's this year. A remarkable feat indeed.

Manhattanmommy, my daughter took several art classes while at Hotchkiss and the experience was amazing. If you haven't visited yet, you will find a gallery and also student work all over the main building especially. The art rooms are great. She had amazing and talented artists visit her class and give demonstrations about their particular "specialty" in the visual arts. You can look on their website for the Tremaine Gallery to get more information. There are concerts many weekends by renowned musicians on campus for the students, and my daughter experienced her first opera while at Hotchkiss. Because NYC is so close and the school is so well connected to many in the arts community, there is no lack of speakers and performers who come to the school. There seems to always be something going on. The staff and teachers are excited and very encouraging to the students and she really blossomed in that atmosphere. She is not musically inclined so I cannot give you any information about the music program.

I forgot to mention about the dress code. The dress code changed this year, making it more strict mostly for girls. They can wear dress pants, but they can have no patch-pockets on the back. This has tended to get more girls wearing dresses and skirts. There has also been a more strict adherence to the length of skirts from the grumblings I have heard from several students. I am going to pull out the dress code and put it in a posting which really spells it out a little better than I have.

Boys wear a collared shirt with either a jacket or tie. Jacket and tie may be chosen and shirts must be tucked in.
Girls: dress or skirt with a blouse, dress shirt or smart top or pants with a collared shirt with an optional jacket or blazer. Hemlines longer than fingertip length.
For all students, pants cannot be jean cut and not have patch pockets.
Footwear: shoes or boots (no flipflops, sandals, athletic shoes, sneakers or slippers)
no hats, logo or lettered gear, no athletic team gear.
No denim, bare midriffs, or excessively form-fitting clothing, no strapless tops....and the like..etc.
There are some dress code alterations permitted during excessive heat.
When there are visiting speakers or for concerts and presentations, the students wear slightly more formal attire. The students definitely learn to dress appropriately for these types of events.

Yeahhh, like manhattanmommy asked, how strong is the music program?

I'm really interested in double-majoring in music, so I was wondering what YOUR opinion is, because you're an actual student at Hotchkiss:)

Muchos gracias haha.

I am a student at Hotchkiss. The music program is very very strong. In fact every summer we have Hotchkiss summer portals where we invite promising musicians among others from around the country to celebrate music. Many professional musicians have commented that the newly built concert hall (elfers) has some of the best acoustics of any hall they have played in. Plus the school has a a handmade Fazioli piano (reputedly among the best pianos in the world). and a superb music faculty. Perhaps most notably Mr. Witkowski who is among the best jazz musicians in America. We recently had the Dean of music of Yale come down and host a concert as well. If music is something you would like to pursue then Hotchkiss really is a superb institution to be at.

Here is a description of the music pavilion:

The spacious, glass-walled, 640-seat music pavilion will command panoramic views of nearby Litchfield hills and lakes. The pavilion seating—configured in the round with parterre and upper-level balconies surrounding a flat-floor orchestra—takes its design cues from Boston Symphony Hall. The pavilion’s one-inch-thick glass walls open to an outdoor terrace for community concerts during the summer. The pavilion itself will have adjustable acoustics to support a wide range of musical performances as well as a variety of other school functions. When in “routine mode,” the pavilion will be furnished with lounge chairs and serve as a unique music listening room for students.

Furthermore some students, like the student highlighted below, choose to pursue music at Julliard on the weekends.

WOW! A Fazioli?!?!?! I've only played on one of those ONCE. Superb! I don't know a pianist who doesn't think the it's the best. They are hard to come by in the US.

The Economist reported on June 7, 2003, that "some artists believe that Fazioli now makes the best pianos in the world" (Wiki)

The pianos are extremely rare in the US and in fact around the world. I believe a very limited number are produced which adds to their scarcity - that and the whopping price tag of up to 100 thousand pounds. You know a school is serious about it's music program when they bring in one of those babies. But what is even more enchanting is hearing some of the best musicians in America come and play them. For instance just a few weeks back we had a whole troupe of musicians come from Julliard to play a concert for us. It was one of the most moving experiences I have ever had.

Are the Hotchkiss decisions up yet ?
