The Hotchkiss Thread

Congrats everyone who got into Hotchkiss ! PM me ! We can arrange a place for all of us CCers to hang out on revisit day !

We could all probably meet up in front of Ford Library on revisit day.

If you guys have any questions feel free to PM me.

I express my condolences to those who were wait-listed/denied.

I was wait-listed, how are my chances, do you know anyone who got in after being on the waitlist. I am applying for 10th grade. I really want to go to Hotchkiss!!!

kafkareborn, do you take music at hotchkiss?
jw.

kafkareborn-

are you sure Mr. Witkowski is a famous jazz musician? I thought he taught classical music
have you really not made one "enemy"?
is everyone at hotchkiss actually "friends"
maybe you've been going to a different hotchkiss than everyone else

kafkareborn (and/or any other Hotchkiss student, current or former),

We received recently a letter from Hotchkiss asking my son to select courses for the coming fall. This letter “strongly recommended” that each new student take only five courses. Because the school catalogue overflows with a tremendous number of interesting subjects, my son is thinking about taking a sixth course (visual arts) beyond the steady five course meal of math, science, foreign language, history and English. My son has taken six courses the past two years at a very competitive and challenging private day school and would like to take an art course this fall, if it wouldn’t overwhelm him.

Would taking a sixth course, especially if it is an art course, be unwise this coming year for a new kid at Hotchkiss, in your opinion? If so, why?

Thanks.

bumpity bump

Well that depends really. As a rule of thumb I would say stick to five and ace them. HOWEVER if you are absolutely sure that you could commit 4-5 hours to work daily without fail then yes go ahead and take that 6th course. If you are coming in as an upped mid I would be careful not to overload myself. It all depends on whether you can do the work. Since your son has spent time at a very intensive day school I would recommend that 6th course particularly since it is in the arts. However for other Hotchkiss kids out there I would recommend against taking a normal 5 course load and then take another science class on top of that for instance unless you are highly highly motivated.

Taking a half year elective however is often a good way to get a broad breadth of topics to cover and you can always decide if you want a lighter course load for the second half of the year !

Good Luck !

Thanks for answering the call, kafkareborn. Sage advice.

Kafkareborn–why don’t you come back more often, I miss your insightful posts!

I have this stupid burning question that I’d like an answer to: for a prep would you recommend a single or double or share with a day student? A friend, whose going this year, and I were IMing last night and he apparently needs to choose, like yesterday, so I told he I’d ask Kafkareborn on cc and he’d have some “sage” advice!

Thanks :)

Hey guys ! hmm …As a prep I would go in a double because you really want to go through that experience at least once in your boarding school career. If you find it is not to your taste you can always opt for a single in your junior year when you may want the quiet that isolation provides. If your roommate proves to be completely incompatible then you may request for a single during the year. I know couple of guys that did that but it is very very rare.

Well to make up for my lack of activity I have a few video treats for you guys:

This video is sick this guy is probably going to the NHL …

Bearcat in chief tearing it up:

Well I have to go now ! Work to do ! Ha !

US Hockey Report is reporting that Bennett (fif has seen him play, wow) and another Hotchkiss junior also committed to Michigan will leave next year to play in the USHL.

Salisbury junior goalie Any Iles (commited to Cornell) will be leaving to play for the National Team Development Progam

Hmm Hockey seems to be the only sport in US where you don’t really need school to get to the top (NHL).

These three may still go to college, but American college players are fairly rare in the NHL

I can think of two NBA players (initials JB and LJ) who also refute that theory.

And maybe 10% of major league baseball players went to college.

Ehh well baseball minor league is kind of like an extension of college for the good players. And yes Lebron James went from highschool to NBA…I don’t know who the hell JB is. But there are more famous highschool-NBA players like Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Dwight Howard, Moses Malone, and so on

But the NBA doesn’t allow you to go straight from highshcool anymore, so essentially you need school. What I was trying to say is that hockey players barely seem to need all of highschool, I know someone from my school left after 10th grade to go play in some league.

EDIT: Just realized the J on the keyboard is near the K, I guess your where referring to kobe bryant.

Eh, what good is one or two years of college…

My mistake, meant to type K.

The way the NFL uses college football is another story, but fif finds it outrageous that the NC$$ allows the ongoing abuses to continue.

I would be outraged but my favorite football school is under investigation currently for football. Some crap having to do with Reggie Bush from 1,000 yrs ago, they need to give it up. He’s long and gone, he gave us a national championship and s Heisman…you can’t take that away. That would just be wrong.

Bs… USC has been cheating for years – and their basketball program is being investigated too.

Yea, idc about the basketball team. Ive always gone for Duke basketball fan…but I feel bad for Tim Floyd (Even though he pays off players), he’s my current basketball coaches best friend and I’ve met him multiple times.

Righty-o Kafkareborn! Thanks for the advice and glad to see the “old sage” back.

I liked the vids and gave the links to my friend. In the Mac Bennett one, it really showed the school environment too, which is awesome and the girls look pretty sweet and the guys looked put together, which is all good.

He does want to know which boy’s dorm for preps is smaller. I guess there’s a question to what size dorm you’d like and he wants the new one, if possible.

Btw, Hotchkiss should have some student directed promo vids like sps. Or do they?

A few more trivial questions:
Laundry service, Y/N?
Food good?
Room phone service plan Y/N?
Any mobile? (i heard verizon gets you a bar or so)
packpack you like?
Computer Y/N?
Mac?
Anything a new student (prep or not) should know going in?
