The Hotchkiss Thread

How much storage room is there in a double?

Closet space?

Is it best to bring things in storage bins and put the bed on risers? How much clearance does that give?

Are the beds twin xl or just twin? They say to just bring flat sheets so it’s unclear but my son would thrash around and never have sheets on his bed if we did that.

Any other helpful storage tips?

Though I would share this with you guys:

About the beds. I really don’t know. Many people do bring bed risers and some are leftover from the previous year that you may borrow I believe. My guess is you have basically a foot of clearance from the floor without risers. I never have used that space though since the closets provide plenty of space. I don’t think space is too much of an issue really. If I were you I would just store things in the upper shelf of the closet I brought almost 3 suit cases and I still had space left over in the closet. Some people use bed risers but mostly because they just like the feel of being higher up I don’t really think that many people actually use the space under their bed for storage - but i could be wrong. I honestly can only think of one guy who uses the space under his bed. They also have a storage site where you pay for boxes and they store them for you at the end of the year.
Hope that helps ! HOLIDAYS BEGAN TODAY ! 3 MONTHS ! woo hoo !

I understand that Hotchkiss begins summer break today. If so, I hope that someone, who may still be at school and who reads this thread, could post a matriculation list showing the top fifteen or so most popular colleges of the Class of '09. I understand that this class was, according to the most recent Hotchkiss monthly newsletter, “spectacular”. Thanks.

The beds in the older dorms have wooden beds that can be flipped over and the mattress put back on the springs and then you give yourself like 3 feet of storage in height under the bed. Very popular choice. You can then put a lot under there, like storage bins, three and two-drawer plastic dressers (order from walmart.com) and you can put your suitcases and boxes and stuff under there with ease. The beds are XL twins. Buy your sheets early as they are the same size as colleges use and many stores run out by mid August. Many kids if they can will buy some type of a foam pad in addition to their mattress pad. Some stores have them tightly wrapped so they aren’t really huge for packing. Use the storage bags that you suck the air out of with a vacuum for comforters and blankets and coats. They work great. BRING HANGERS-they are not in the closet and the stores in Millerton and other small towns nearby will be wiped out of them when you get there because everyone forgets to bring them. More to come as I think of it.

we were there for graduation and it seemed like everyone we talked to was going to an Ivy, top tier liberal arts college, and the like. It was very impressive. Many had been accepted to more than one ivy. crazy.

I’m glad to hear that college placement at Hotchkiss this year was excellent, but surprised that this school didn’t disseminate at graduation a list showing which seniors were going to which colleges. The private day schools in my area circulate such lists as standard fare. Sounds like the BS’s in NE are more discrete, although I would tend to think that they would be more demonstrative with such lists because such information would be, in my opinion, much more valued and critical to a BS with a worldwide base than a private day school with only a local reach.

Toombs61- We were involved, in one way or another, with four prep school graduations this year. All four passed out college matriculation lists. A quick scan of the Choate list showed 7 kids to Yale, 5 to Harvard, 5 to Princeton (none of which my kids will be attending, but we’re happy with the outcome!)

Thanks, parentalview! Very helpful stuff!!!

baystateresident, thanks for the update. I assume that one of the graduations in which you were recently invloved was a ceremony at Hotchkiss. If so, I hope to receive from this school or see on CC somewhere the 2009 college matriculation Hotchkiss list, even if it is in redacted form.

Toombs- unfortunately I don’r know about Hotchkiss. CRH, two other boarding schools in CT and one in Virginia. I know, crazy. They all either had a special issue of the newspaper with the college list, or it was in the program.

Oh well, a college placement list will surface sometime, in some form, for the Hotchkiss Class of '09. We’ll just have to wait for that list until then.

I would imagine they would like to publish a very accurate matriculation list, and as you might not be aware, many colleges are just now finishing their final adjustments in admission due to waitlists; yes they do waitlist for college in case you thought that was just a prep school phenom. Anyway, that is typically finished to a large degree with colleges by the middle of June at the very latest, whereas prep schools tend to work off their waitlists into the mid summer. I’m not sure what the pressure is for the matriculation lists by the posters on this site or why anyone should feel that a school must have that information out before, like I said, the waitlists have closed, but I’m sure Hotchkiss will have theirs out shortly.

My daughter just graduated from Hotchkiss and I can tell you, that without a doubt, it was the best four years of her life. She made friends from all over the world and took advantage of the many offerings that the school provided.

I’m not sure of the exact college placement stats, but I can say I was blown away by the talent of the current graduating class. From the students who performed at the Senior Music Recital, to the numerous outstanding athletes and the many unbelievable academic achievements recognized at the awards ceremony. This class had it all. I’m very sad to say goodbye to Hotchkiss and l only hope my second child will want to attend and will be admitted.

To answer the one question regarding how many classes to take… I would seriously consider the advice offered by the school. First of all, it is very difficult to schedule more than five classes. In addition, remember that in order to take advantage of the many offerings (debate, drama, music, athletics, clubs, student government) your child will need time. Athletics or some other activity is required each term and will keep your child busy until about 6:00 every night six days a week (there are classes and athletics on Saturdays). If your child wants to primarily study all the time and participate in the minimum amount of required activities (and your child is very smart!) then taking 6 classes is probably doable. Just remember your child will find Hotchkiss more memorable and rewarding if they participate and take advantage of all the wonderful offerings.

Getting all A’s at any school will not guarantee admissions to an Ivy league school (even all A’s at Hotchkiss), so never let that be your goal. Work hard, participate, engage with the amazing faculty and students from the world over and you will be enriched for life. Each year Hotchkiss will always have kids go to Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, Dartmouth, Bowdoin, Williams, etc… but many more graduates will go on to other fine schools (as hard as it is to believe, there are other great colleges). the Ivy’s are looking for something more than good grades and test scores. Many of the Ivy kids from Hotchkiss have the athletics, the family connections and/or the remarkable life story to go along with the tremendous education they received while at Hothckiss. Many of my daughters friends were happy with their college choice, some were not. All were happy with their Hotchkiss choice and wouldn’t have changed a thing despite where they are attending college. Some colleges on that list include Brown, Yale, Harvard, Bowdoin, Middlebury, Cambridge, Northwestern, Hamilton, Washington University in St. Louise, Duke, USC, Davidson, Wesleyan, Wake Forest, Dartmouth, Georgetown, NYU, and Boston University. So much about college, enjoy the Hotchkiss years and don’t worry about the next step until upper mid year.

P.S. the sailing team is great, not because they win or lose, but because of the great kids on the team and the great coaches. It takes a special kind of kid to get out on that lake in early April (as long as the ice is gone by then) and sail away the afternoon in the freezing cold.

Fairville – totally off the page, but it sounds like your child is a Hotchkiss sailor. Have you ever asked anyone at Hotchkiss why they don’t offer rowing? Especially with that beautiful lake. There have beem rumors for years that the sport was dropped many years ago due to an accident, and that there was a crew boathouse on the waterfront. Any insight? Thanks.

fun is fun – You are correct my child was a Hotchkiss sailor and loved every minute of it. I never did ask about crew. The boathouse is used by the sailing team. I did read an entire book about the history of Hotchkiss and nothing was mentioned about a tragic accident on the water. There was a tragic automobile accident a number of years ago, which (I believe) is the reason Hotchkiss kids cannot have cars on campus or be a passenger in a car driven by another student. Sorry I don’t know more about crew.

Thanks - fif was pm’ed by a former Hotchkiss Master who gently chided him for spreading a rumor.

fif will chalk this up to the rumor mill, AND NEVER MENTION IT AGAIN.

I too find it odd that Hotchkiss has no crew program, especially in light of the fact that it is the quintessential BS sport and the school’s incredible proximity to the lake, the name of which almost no one can or wishes to remember or pronounce. Is the lake too small to hold routine regattas, or does it remain frozen too long in the spring?

Or does Hotchkiss just find it unbecoming for this august school, and detrimental to the tender and impressionable wards under its care and tutelage, to support or maintain in any way the efforts of those who just wish to sit on their butts and go backwards?

I’m sorry to be a freak, but I read in another thread that at hotchkiss that the showers in the boys dorms are not separated…
Idk if the person said that was joking, but I’m going there next year so…
anybody wanna help me out???

“As for the Cliques, Cliques at Hotchkiss are essentially nonexistent”
i had a great time at hotchkiss, and will always promote the school… but that is just a ■■■■■ statement
