Question! Question!
How strict are they about the “no patch pockets” dress code rule? I always have a terrible time finding pants that fit me well, and the only stuff I can seem to find has patch pockets but is definitely dressy enough for formal-dress classes. HALP!!!

Hey, I’m starting Hotchkiss in less than a month as an upper mid. This is very embarrassing to admit, but I have no idea what patch pocket pants are! I’ve googled it and asked everyone I know, but no one else seems to have any idea either. Could someone please explain?

patch pockets are talking about the pocket on the back of pants. if its a patch pocket, then its just the pocket sewed onto the outside of the pants, like the back pocket of jeans. if it doesnt have a patch pocket, then it would be the little thin slit thingy on the back of the pants. i guess they have this rule to make sure that people wear dressier pants?
not too sure how well i explained it, but…
just try comparing the back pockets of a pair of jeans to a pair of really dressy pants

Hey,
Does anyone think I can get in to Hotchkiss, its one of my top choices.
All A’s and A+'s, 2 years ahead in math, on practice test i got 2400 for ssat and I’ll probably get 2350 or higher on SSAT, I play golf and am pretty good at it but by no means am I a golf superstar, I am in Brain Bowl, I am in Forensics, I am in Wordmasters, I am in computer/robotics club, I am in the peer leader program (a leadership program), I volunteer regularly, by the time I start my interviews I’ll have 50+ hours from soup kitchen, religious site, nursing homes, I will try to start an AMC8 team in eight grade and a Mathcounts team, and for I will try to start a club for charity. Also, I moved many times, (not sure if that counts for anything.), overall at least 5-6 places all over the US, lived in the South, the Midwest, the NE, the West.
And I’m applying for ninth grade.

i dont really know anything about the other kids that get accepted since ill be new, but i do know that hotchkiss starts with 9th grade

Now can you evaluate me?

i dont know a lot about admission to hotchkiss. you look like a much better applicant than i was though. try a pm to kafkareborn. he goes to hotchkiss, so will know a lot more than i do

Alright I will.

Ccer999, your stats look very good, especially if your school is highly regarded. My son will enroll in Hotchkiss next month as a lower mid, and he looks forward to three wonderful years there. I hope that you will be able to join him in Lakeville soon.

My school is pretty easy for me, but I really can’t find middle school rankings for my state, all I could locate while perusing the web was that GreatSchools rated it 10/10. I don’t know if that counts for anything.

And thank you very much, I hope your son has a great life at Hotchkiss and goes on to enjoy a great future.

I can answer - Lake Wononscopomuc is a very deep lake, and fairly rough with high winds. It just isn’t very suitable for crew. There is an old hockey pond that may be more suitable, but, as with most of the administration, the athletic department is very draconian and focuses more on recruiting (to ridiculous levels for basketball and lacrosse in particular) more traditional sports than allowing a new program. They are the only school in the area that does not offer skiing as a varsity sport, either.

IM SO PUMPED FOR SCHOOL TO START!!!
i hope im just as excited when its time to go back a year from now…

Now that you mention it, it is strange that there is no interscholastic skiing at Hotchkiss. With this school’s rural location and close proximity to winter resort areas, skiing would seem to be a great fit at Hotchkiss. It is odd that crew and skiing, both uber preppy activities, are not varsity sports at this uber prep school.

Hotchkiss did have skiing once - in the late seventies if I rembeber correctly. I have no idea why or when it stopped though all I know is that in the 70s it was a varsity sport on campus. That being said I have seen some people with snow boards and what not around campus I think there may be a club of some sorts but I a m not sure on that at all my memory is somewhat foggy.

Kafkareborn, glad to see your return to this thread. The perusers here have missed your sage advise about, and perspicacious views on, Hotchkiss during your months of absence. Welcome back.

Thanks Toombs. I have been very busy this summer working on a few things. It’s been hectic so I have not had time to come on here. Once I get back to Hotchkiss the same is probably going to be true. But I’m glad to help whenever I can but I will probably go into hiatus soon enough. Well later then !

can anyone confirm or explain why hotchkiss ssat score dropped to 83rd percentile as reported by BSR?

athletic recruits? They seem to be targeting athletes lately.

Ha. Obviously not. I take any figures from Boarsing School Review with a bucket of salt - its figures have been proven time and time again to be wildly out of date and wildy incorrect. Accorging to them last time I checked Andover’s SAT score was 2008 a full 60 or so points below what my friends at Andover tel me their actual score is. The fact of the matter is Hotchkiss does not provide their average SSAT scores - try looking for it on the internet and see what you come up with. I go to Hotchkss and work in the admissions office building, and would be very interrested to know the actual ssat results if I don’t know I highly doubt the unproffesional BSR site would. The only thing BSR is good for is population figures and personal anecdotes in my opionion all other information should be collected independently. All boarding schools tend to shy away from providing information like that to rsites because they boycott any attempt to “ran” the schools and the SSAT board does not provide average SSAT scores per school either. I do not for a minte believe that Hotchkiss’ SSAT is at the 83rd percentile think of it logically do you actually believe that a school can have a 9 point drop in a single year ? Hotchiss would never undermine its academic integrity for a few recruits it recruits just like an other school. My guess is sabotge by the oh so infamous anti-hotchkissers that lurk around the intenet with nothing etter to do than try to tear the school down - my guess is they are from taft but I could be wrong.

A few athletic recruits isn’t going to kill an average…and most athletic recruits are just as smart as someone who got in for their music interest, or interest in debate and so on. They accept the person, not the score…pleanty of people score in bewteen 95-99 that apply to hotchkiss.
