The Imapact of Standarized Test Scores...

"I just want everyone to look at the ED Results. Quite a few people with 700+ on all of their SATs (I and II) were flat out rejected. Others with 600s were deferred (myself included) and one was even accepted to CAS, the school with the lowest acceptance rate (other than AAP)."

haha i'm the "one." 680 on math SAT I.

wow arjun, you're very arrogant...

If you are applying to the engineering college, are the sat i math or the sat II- math iic more important?

Probably. Although that's not saying 800 in both will definitely get you in, they probably care about that more than say, 800 on AP Spanish.

I think especially this year, SAT scores are valued minimally, because it is the first year of using the new SATs, so colleges don't see it as a good indicator of a canidate's strength. It's too bad because I have a 2300 (composite), and 3.5uw GPA. I've seen lotta people get into top schools this year with around 2000 SAT, but I don't remember seeing anyone with a low GPA. Sigh...I really wanted to get into Cornell but it doesn't look like I have a good chance...

vicissitudes, you have a chance! what is your rank? do you go to a competetive high school?

It's a pretty competitive public high school. There's only one person in my class who has a 4.0 GPA. (takes pretty easy classes...we all hate him lol)

Ummm...don't think my rank is that high though. High school doesn't report rank anyway.

Anyhoo...I'll apply and see. Just wish I didn't have to wait four months, haha.

"There's only one person in my class who has a 4.0 GPA. (takes pretty easy classes...we all hate him lol"

Believe me, adcoms will see he took easier classes. They are more likely to accept a student with a 3.6 lets say, who took the hardest classes available, than this guy who got a 4.0 taking easy classes.

Oh please. My brother's best friend got into MIT with an 1180. A girl from school (white female) got into Princeton with a 1280.

Megaman: I'm not sure I believe that anymore. I got rejected from Yale EA while he got accepted into Stanford EA.

I really think GPA is a lot more important than people believe. SAT scores...mmm...nah.

sat scores are 73% important, grades 75% important, extracurriculars 7% important. (according to kaplan anyways)

Hmmmm? That adds up to 155%.

Let's see some proof of this... I have a hard time believing this considering how much emphasis is put on the SAT on a nationwide scale...

Vicissitudes: they aren't mutually exclusive...

Wow bananas, did he have any hooks?
URM?
first-gen?

1180 MIT.. jeeez

i got into cornell with a 1280 combined math & cr (730 and 550 respectively)

Live-

I did not make that up. I have taken statistic courses at Cornell. Since i don't have my book with me, i can't give you the exact data. But i remember that about 17% of the variability in college GPA is accounted for by the SAT scores. By looking at that % you can see that SAT scores do not really indicate how successful you will be in college. That % is a bit higher for High school GPA which makes it a better indicator. (Again i don't have the exact data with me, i will try to look for them! It would be better if you look for them too )

1180 MIT acceptee was from Aviation High School in NYC, the only high school of its kind in the world. He had some special aviation liscense and received a prestigious tool box award from the military or something like that. He was Hispanic and first generation, but was also the valedictorian of his class and a phenominal writer with amazing essays.

And the 1280 to Princeton was a white female with the voice of angel who sang at a Mets game and was a really GREAT writer.

Just be yourself. If you're boring, you're not getting in.

i have really good test scores, but my class rank is barely top 10% (weighted). I think i'm probably going to be rejected.

Posts like these are pointless because none us know what goes on behind the closed doors of the admissions office. You can post an encyclopedia of statistics, precidents, etc. Some even say it all depends on which admissions offcer's desk your application falls on. In the end it is all based on what a college needs, not who needs the college.
