The importance of AP scores/tests as a high school freshman...

Exactly how important are your scores on AP tests you take as a freshman?

I took the AP World History exam and I'm still waiting for my score to arrive (Central Florida). I feel like I did my best on the multiple choice and performed pretty well on the DBQ, but the FRQ's kind of got me. I'm afraid the FRQ's are what will give me a 3, but as a Freshman is a 3 particularly "bad"? Keep in mind I have UF at the top of my college list (as of now), not any Ivy League...as much as I'd love to attend one.

Thanks in advance guys!

So did your score arrive yet? Or you’re just guessing that you have a 3?
Technically, a 3 means passing. So it is not particularly “bad” if you have one. But of course everyone would love to have a score of 5.

No passing AP score is ‘bad’ for UF. Many freshmen don’t even take AP exams, it was unheard of in my high school (also in Central FL!). So don’t even begin to worry… And most people here got their scores in the mail today, so I’m sure you’ll get yours within the next day or two!

When you take the AP exam hardly has any bearing (if any at all) on the importance of your score. Getting a 3 as a freshman and getting a 3 as a junior probably won’t make the slightest difference on your application.

No matter when you took it, the equivalent college credit that your college of choice offers will not change.

So in essence, it doesn’t matter at all that you’re a freshman.

BelliesAreFull – a reference to Portugal. The Man?

Dude dont worry. Its just an AP exam.

As long as you passed, you’re good. I also took World last year as a freshman in Central Florida. Got a 4. If you didn’t pass, you still have 3 more years of AP exams and can always retake World if you want.

There is no point in retaking an AP exam even if you did fail.

Thanks for the input everyone…I’m at a bit more ease now.

I’m dying for the score to arrive, it’s times like these where I wish I lived on the west coast.

@Mariya Yep! I’m suprised someone caught that.

Even if there was a point in retaking an exam, you can’t anyways.

^

Is that true? I thought that you could.

^ You’re right. I was, for some reason, under the impression that you can only take the exam once. Not sure why.

But according to the CB website, you can in fact retake exams: [Advanced Placement Exams FAQ – AP Questions](<a href=“Get the Most Out of AP – AP Students | College Board”>Get the Most Out of AP – AP Students | College Board)

The caveat is that EACH score for each time you take the same exam is included on your score report.

But maybe you can cancel beforehand and then retake it so that your avg score won’t hurt.
You can do that, right?
Please answer my question regarding that http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/ap-tests-preparation/960538-im-new-retaking-ap-questions.html?highlight=freshman#post1065240579</a></p>

I have buddies who got into UF with a string of 1’s and 2’s with no passing scores. If you have a good GPA and a high class rank, then you should be set for UF instate. Don’t worry about the APs, and best of luck.

Some people say oh my friend got into ____ school with 1’s and 2’s but these cases are extremely special, usually has things to do with alumni legacy, major, ethnicity, or sports. You can’t always count on these “advantages” and say oh you can get in with 1’s and 2’s. It’s best to aim WAY above the average/

UF is not a bad school and since you have already taken the AP world history, then there is no point in stressing out about it. I took 2 AP’s in my freshman year and got 2 5’s. My friend who was a freshman this year took 7 and got all 5’s on them (believe it or not he’s not nerdy… pretty cool actually) If you get a 4, it’s not a big deal. But if you do get a 3, I recommend you read up on some review books for a year every night for about 10-15 mins and take it again in your sophomore year. APs are pretty important. A 5 isn’t going to gurantee you getting into UF but my point is, dont stress about it since there are A LOT more things you can do to boost your resume. If you feel like you don’t want to study for a retake if you get a 3, then don’t do it. You can always spend that time self studying another AP

Scores matter in your freshman AP’s the same as it matters in your junior AP’s. However, the grades you get in the freshman AP classes don’t matter so much. In fact, colleges love upward trends (from B’s to B’s and A’s to all A’s in honors/ap classes, BUT NOT B’s in honors to A’s in regular, not much difference there), since it shows that you have amazing adaptive abilities and resilience. Good luck my man

if you really feel like you’re dying u can just call for the scores for 8 bucks.

This really isn’t relevant for in-state students at UF. First of all, a lot of their applicants are URMs considering there are more URMs in Florida than the national average, so ethnicity is not as big a deal. For a public school, they consider your grades, SATs, class rank, and then comes ECs and such. UF says they practice holistic admission, but there is a lot of focus on grades and class rank. If you have a top 10 class rank and a high UF GPA, there is a very good chance you’ll get accepted even with mediocre SATs/ECs/etc.

People from my high school have had low APs for years, but a high class rank along with a high GPA has enabled the top 5/6 students rank wise to always get accepted. Read the UF forums if you don’t believe me.

A 3 as a freshman is most definitely fine for UF. Even extremely selective schools (many Ivies) possess a neutral attitude when it comes to score a 3.

However, I wouldn’t say a poor AP score as a freshman would weigh in any less than a poor AP score as a sophomore or junior when it comes to selective schools. Many students in my high school (and others) take AP classes beginning freshman year. AP exams are based on your knowledge of a particular subject that you learned throughout the year. Your knowledge of that subject would most likely not increase if you took the course as an upperclassman.

I don’t understand why everybody is so concerned with how their score will affect their admissions chances, when everything I read on CC says that AP scores won’t hurt your chances. They are simply a way of determining whether or not you will earn college credit.
