The Indian Thread #20

All three of them (stan, caltech and mit ) are not need blind :P

Only in very specific engineering jobs.

If you’re at Harvard and want to, for instance, program for Google, you absolutely still can. Just don’t expect them to come to you, because most tech firms just assume Harvard engineering grads are only after the money, which tech doesn’t offer to the same degree as some other sectors.

Haha well you have the ability to. Whether it is appreciated or not is another matter altogether  But hey more the advice the better right?

Lol, yes you can!

Plenty of non-Indians do. :)

Ahh now the dynamics have changed a bit. Indeed Harvard is need-blind so it might not be such a bad idea applying there after all. But if you wanna do something technical, SMC are still the places to go to. PD id imagine all technical eng jobs are like that. And programming isnt eng btw ;)

Dude, you’re in Caltech, so you must have an international award or a recognition. What field you’re pursuing? If it’s a scientific field, can you guide me on which organisations/programmes/competitions (besides the ones I’ve listed) will give me the best opportunities to accrue a lot of recognition as well as further knowledge about science (or to mention specifically, space sciences/research)? The ones I already know are, almost all the top summer schools in the US, ISSYP, Google Science Fair, ISEF, Regional competitions in India (a sort of a threshold for things to happen), the olympiads and obviously, clubs here and there.

The reason I’m inquiring all this is that I hail from an average school; although we have a lot of opportunities available, the lack of recognition as top school seriously deters most organisations to be affiliated with us, or even contact us. So I guess it’s more my own hardwork than to rely on my school. And I can’t change it either, because it’s too late to do it. (I am currently in 11th grade, which means I will be a 'class of ‘17 guy’).

If you want engineering, apply REA to Stanford w/out asking for aid. For RD, apply to 5-6 top-10 schools, 3-4 good-in-your-major schools, and 2-3 safeties/matches.

Lol I know. just giving an example that Harvard can get you anything if you actually pursue it. Just don’t expect to be dazzled by the curriculum or your professors at Harvard Engineering. :)

is computer science under engineering? i want to do computer science…but nevertheless harvard sucks at that too lol

REA to Stanford WITHOUT AID? i cant afford it :)

Well Im one of the few internationals at Caltech who doesnt have any intl medal at all. I studied in S’pore and so I couldnt represent my school since I was Indian. Not saying I was good enough to represent, maybe I couldve if I tried but because of that technicality it was a futile endeavour. My advice Eminemfan is to chill out for now. You’re just in 11th. Try doing well in your olympiads. Remember that MIT, Caltech and Stanford arent the be all end all. Grad school is more important anyway and its a lot more predictable to get into these schools for grad school. Just be cool man :)

Sorry, didn’t know that.

Exactly, dont yall wanna be dazzled by your curriculum? Trust me at Caltech you’ll be dazzled to the extent of blindness :S

Who said that you can’t decide on unis with just being cool enough? I don’t worry at all, I just seek information, and of course, opportunities. The only trouble with me is that I have to rely too much on myself than my school, although I hope to achieve something that shows that I did better than what was available at my school. :)

Caltech’s awesome. It’s probably the only school in the world where I’d be the coolest person in the entire college lol.

Do something interesting in partnership with students from schools where there’s more available. That always looks good.

Well if you’re cool then thats great. As for opportunities, dont kill yourself. Just do your best in the standard olympiads and of course in school. If you can make it to the intl level then great. Anyway just enjoy yourself. Turns out, I got to Caltech by just explaining how I loved science ;)

Being cool is the only consolation I have in the face of these crazy olympiad medallists >.<

Oh and PD clear your inbox, I wanna send you something :P

Just cleared it.

And yall might want to consider England for university as well.

Lol no, don’t unless it’s LSE Economics, Cambridge Law or Oxford PPE. The university experience here sucks.
