When I applied to graduate school a longtime ago, I remember thinking my 77% is equal to 3.1 or so. I found out one of the schools that admitted me had the transcript evaluated by some agency to provide an US basis and I was shocked to see they considered it somewhere around 3.5 or 3.6 as a scaled score.

i too got 77% in my 12th grade, is it too low to get into any elite school (even if I have great SAT scores and ecs)?

PerfectPrashant - The GPA conversion discussion above is for someone with an undergraduate degree.

It all depends on the pool applying from India. If they have 90% or more, where does 77% rate?

Someone help me please: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1192335-chance-me-please-again.html

Or at least tell me if I have a chance in Cornell…

Yep, although I’m in Ithaca and there are deer on campus and the food is great and la la la, I’d like to corroborate what pixie said a couple of pages ago, Cornell is SADISTIC with aid. Need blind but NOT guaranteeing to meet your need. There are posts on this forum by some guy who was dumped for aid by Cornell and couldn’t go to college that year(but he went to Yale next year so happy ending for him), and yes, the same happened to Debarghya and many other people I know. Cornell admits close to 40 Indians every year and MANY of them are needy but only 6-7 receive aid. Or 10 in our batch’s case, but you’re not going to be lucky enough every year to have the initial Tata scholars go off to HYP and have the scholarships passed on to you. So BEWARE. Cornell’s also not the greatest choice academically unless you’re a hotelie or engineer, so look at Brown and Penn which have much more straightforward aid policies. Yep I know I’m a terribly disloyal Cornelian and should be pushed into one of the gorges. Good luck, class of 2016 and hope you have as good a year as we did.

Something that has really been troubling me is how colleges and people in general perceive the word Asian. I feel the word Asian is hollisitc in meaning, it takes into account the Middle East, South Asia, South East Asia etc.

Ethnicity wise are we South Asians clubbed together with the rest of the Asians?

The reason this worries my is that there are (comparatively) so many of them !!! Especially on CC.

Also, we look very different to them. Indians, Pakistanis, Bangldeshis, and Sri Lankans don’t look anything like those who life further to the east.

^ Yes, I did make a thread. Asian - the CommonApp phobia. Precisely speaking, North Indians should be grouped with Caucasians. Because ‘Asian’ as an ethnicity, comprises peoples of China, Japan, Philippines, South East Asia (and that area). I’m not really sure about South Indians. Are they grouped with caucasians as well?

Basically, according to US Federal Laws, all Indians are Asians. Why is this a bad thing for everyone on this thread? Because Asians in the top universities (where I am assuming most if not all of us are applying) are over-represented. Contrast it with the case of URMs and you’ll see why competition among Asian candidates is the maximum. Only the best are accepted.

My suggested alternative to this was not specifying ethnicity on the CommonApp, because wth, it’s an optional field. But other CCers suggested me not to do so as most admissions officers might view it suspiciously.

You are correct to question this, however, US laws won’t change. If we aren’t grouped with asians, the chances of admission might be quite higher for us.

On common app it does allow us to specify which part of Asia.

I did the CIE IGCSE program. Is there any way for me to convert that into a GPA ? I already know it isn’t really possible to convert the IB.

Haha Caltech doesnt care about filling itself up with Asians 40% Asian baby. But only 20 intls so it doesnt really matter much to us And no point lamenting something that we cannot change. We are Asians according to the US. Americans also think Australia is North Korea what’ll ya do? ;)

Lol Americans are not stupid ^^, hilarious youtube video. I’m sure there’ll be nothing like that in universities :P

^ Actually, if you scout about CC a bit, you’ll see a stickied thread on the lines of ‘What was/were the thing/s you were most surprised seeing when you came to America for college’. It’s basically an internationals discussion thread and most people there have pointed out that quite a few of their American peers use the calculator for even basic mathematical operations, ones which can be done faster mentally.

haha thats hilarious xD.

haha ! funny! xD

Not in any case a defense of Americans, but perhaps you know Mathematics and memory was Einstein’s weak point? :p

Americans would say a large population of ours don’t even know what calculators are. This ‘who is more stupid’ argument will perpetuate, with no positive results.

Perhaps we should all concur that we all are stupid in our own way. :p

LOL @ ‘they make stuff for us’ hahaha

I am surprised it does nt say they take our jobs.

^ That’s a relatively recent phenomena, isn’t it?

My calculations are relatively slow too ^^
