The Indian Thread #20

True the tab is indeed backbreaking… But this decision was taken after lot of deliberation. The Program is a perfect fit for her, suits her talent academically, love for languages her career aspirations and passion to the tee. This was her dream College and Program, so I would say she is fortunate to find the two in one place. Hopefully she will benefit both as a person and a professional from this wonderful opportunity, the education, the exposure and the experience. Just praying that it is all that she wished for herself and more.

800 Math IIC
740 Chem >_< :@ :\ RAWR&^^%*

Congrats Tizil7 on the great score. Anything above 700 is great in Subject SAT.

maths IIc 780
physics 790
chem 750
really wanted that 800 in maths!
@tizil7 congo for that maths score!

mitboundmeche
Congrats you have done well for yourself. Don’t worry 780-800 same difference as we say in India.

@anialways thanx!!!

Thank you Anialways and MITboundMechE!
And woah. You took 3 subject tests! That’s great! and good scores at that :D

Darkanddown, 2140 is good. Don’t worry about it that much. What you should focus on now are your essays and also the presentation of your application, unless you are taking another SAT in November, in which case, study harder :)

I am currently preparing for my SAT in November and not concentrating on my applications. That said, my common app essay looks almost complete.

Plus, if anyone else is applying through UCAS, UC, GTech, MIT or commonapp, please feel free to PM me as we can discuss the applications and help out each other :D

Eh, you’re disappointed with 2140 d&d ? I got a 2040. Rules out all the ivies for me definitely.

I got a 2020. I see no point in living. Bye-bye aspirations. :(

@tizil how much time are u giving per day for the sat in november?i can manage like 2-3 hrs in evry 2 days.will u be appearing for any subject test again in december?i am thinking of retaking maths.!

Well, I can give you some advice - for what it’s worth - on how to approach the Math IIC and Chemistry tests.

Math IIC
The Barrons SAT Subject Test in Mathematics Level 2 is your holy grail. It over-prepares you. If you do all the questions in it, including examples and practice papers two - three times, you are set for an 800 on the test (provided you understand all the explanations).

Now, what you have to keep in mind is that most of the questions on which Barrons asks you to use a calculator can also be done otherwise, saving you valuable time. I would suggest that you keep a graphing calculator with you at all times. I used a TI-89 (which, against popular perception, is allowed on all collegeboard exams). Having such a powerful graphing calculator helps you in two ways on the test:

You can graph functions (obviously).

You can solve for practically anything. A few examples are:

solve(5x^2+e^(y^2x)-0.5xy=22/7, x) | y = sqrt(2)
solve Sin(2x)=Cos(3pi/2+5x) where 0<x<pi

You punch that in and the calculators spits out the answer instantaneously  I honestly couldn’t have scored an 800 in one hour without my calculator - and I don’t mind others commenting on my math skills because of this because the test is designed so that the student uses a calculator.

Since the Barron’s book has 6 practice tests, there will be no dearth of questions for you. But remember one thing … the test can have questions from any portion of the allotted syllabus. So please do pay attention to things such as sin rule, cosine rule, etc.

Then, just to make yourself feel happy, take an official practice test from the blue book from college board. It’s not that fat blue book … it’s a blue book just for maths subject tests.

And finally… don’t feel discouraged if you are getting 680<x<780 on your practice tests because if you do see your mistakes and read all solutions, you are good to go for an 800 on he real thing! Also, please pace yourself. This should be pretty obvious, but I wasn’t as careful and had to omit the last 4 questions :/

Graphing calculator that necessary? I was thinking of taking a scientific one, since a graphing calc is damn expensive and I don’t even know how to use it.

Chemistry

[ul]
[]Books to read (in order of reading)
[]Princeton Review
[li]Barrons Chemistry
[/li]

[/ul]
I suggest that order of reading because PR has the most accurate syllabus but in lesser depth. Barrons on the other hand has quite a few extraneous bits but explains things in much more depth.

That’s pretty much all I can say. Always revise the concepts. Don’t make the mistake of studying for the Chem test from the NCERT/Pradeep etc. As long as your practice test scores fall in the range of >720, you have a good shot for getting a 800.

Good Luck!

Just wanted to add my 2 cents. Having lived in both sides of the fence, getting into USA undergrad colleges is not the be all/end all. Remember only a handful get aid. So even if you had a stellar SAT, there was no guarantees. Moreover, indian students even after aid, have to shell out a big chunk of money here. It is not a cakewalk even if they come here. They suddenly struggle to meet ends meet and work small jobs in college. Even though people complain about the educational facilities in India, there ARE PLENTY of good institutions in India. Especially now there is a plethora of private colleges as well. Majority of the Indians do finish their undergrad and even grad schools in India. And guess what, they all do very well. Personally I have family who are in big corporations in India and guess what, no they did not go to IIT, NIT or even the other big ones. They are living a good life and go abroad for vacations. The “grass is always greener” on the other side. So my last piece of advise is do well with what you have, even though it may not seem like it, India has many, many colleges that provide solid education. Once you complete some undergrad, you can always apply to graduate school.

The way some posts are implying here is - you dont get into IIT or USA, you are doomed. Trust me, you are not. Been there, done that.

haha @darkanddown - you are watching too many bollywood movies. Trust me - graduating from US will not get you all that  But you already know that.

the oct sat results are out,how did everyone do?

I got 2210 770M 760CR 680W
@darkanddown Which colleges are you going to apply to?

Hiii Guys
Congratulations to everybody for amazing SAT Scores

Thanks tanarch,and what’s your score?
@darkdown yeah me too.so where are you from?? I am from Ludhiana,Punjab
And when are you going to take the subject tests?

Taking Math 1, Math2 and Physics in November. So not looking forward to it :stuck_out_tongue:
@Karan What major are you applying for? Where all? Just curious.
