k_twin:hey,you must have taken part in school acivities whole heartedly, but I couldn't do that even if I desparately wanted it,coz of the IIT couchings...in 11th and 12th......and u know how ARE they!!!!

so,I did activities (most of them personal and very few from school for which I dont have any certificate!),thats y I needed help.....

It depends on how many hours you work. A Typical campus job will net you between $2-$3 K.

2) Moving of campus would be of any help?

Many schools require freshman to stay on campus. If you move off campus, you have to think of rent, furniture and even transportation to and from your apartment to college. Unless you find roommates, the rent will be high.

Most towns in US are not comuter friendly.

3) coming back ot India during break or staying and workingfull time during hols which might be less costly.

Here again it depends on the kind of job you get. A typical low skill job will pay you about $8-$10/hr. In addition you have to think about transportation cost + living expenses + taxes. Internships pay well, but as a frosh + student visa they might be hard to come by. Last year my son had an internship and his net was about 4.5K.

You might be able to make 6-8 k per year, but do not count or rely on it.

I don't think so. It is true that majority of the kids at Duke are WASPs but that doesn't means that Indians will feel out of place there. You don't require an old money heritage to have fun or to make friends. And mind you most of the Indians there are no less than Indian equivalent of WASPs.

Well,I still need to cut short my list-
Upenn
Duke
Brown
Yale
Stanford
Pennstate uni
John Hopkins
Caltech
Harvard
Trinity
MIT(hehe..)
Dartmouth

And these are not the only unis....I hav applied to Uni of New South Wales,Australian National Uni(both in AUS) and recieved offer of admission...
