Everything is the "in" topic here :D

Hehe.
Where all have you had success, prateek?

notable one's....northwestern and a waitlist at Harvey Mudd
plus two safeties

ivy's yet to come :O

@thebigcheese121

I missed this week's episode...I saw the wrestling one...lol

Ah all the best for D-Day :)

yeah i need it
thanks:)

Which Ivies have you applied to?

7....not Dartmouth ( I did but then discovered that they only had an engineering degree with concentrations....not a mechanical engineering degree per se)

shouldn't have done so many :/

Ok, so till now I had been only looking at nuclear physics. But if you guys say so I might do general physics at undergrad level. So which univs are worth applying to? Basically they should be >>IIT, good financial aid(preferably need-based)
The ones I know a lil about-
MIT
Caltech
UC Berkeley
U Penn
UIUC
UM Ann-Abor(spell?)
Cornell
Stanford
Harvard
University of Toronto?

Oh wow...all but Dartmouth then...damn that's a lot of work!

@gary: What exactly do you mean by >IIT? All American univs are miles better than IIT in my opinion, but your mileage may vary...

What exactly so you mean by 'mileage' here? Also, what I mean is the difference in standards from the IITs should be enough to compensate for the financial burden and problems with shifting base(not for me-my parents)

I'd say IF you get into IIT,you should go for it...you can post grad in USA...just my opinion;)

Smartchap is somewhat right..

As for your list..caltech is extremely stingy with aid..unless you've got some extremely science oriented activities..no chance..
no aid offered by uiuc, berkeley and michigan
Are you looking for full aid btw?

If not full aid, I don't think my parents will be willing to pay much more than 10-15K dollars.

No no what I meant is that different people are looking for different things in their college experience. Some people go purely for the academic differences (quality of professors, availability of research opportunities) between American and Indian colleges. Looking at things from that point of view, IIT definitely isn't too far away from some American collegs (but I'm quite anti-IIT...no offence, but it's just a personal opinion so I'm not gonna speak too loudly about it).

On the other hand, some people (like me) look at the college experience holistically. That is, not only in terms of academics, but also in terms of the people I'll meet, the extracurricular opportunities I'll get, the culture immersion, learning to live away from home, and of course juggling everything. So for me, any US college tops an Indian one.

That is what I meant by 'your mileage may vary' :)

BTW, for physics, definitely check out Reed and Harvey Mudd.

Thanks for the clarification tetris! For me, the most important aspect of American universities is the oppuortunity to do research and do it with some sort of 'prestige'. Not like in India where it is assumed someone did a B.Sc. just coz he wasn't 'good enough' to get into any engineering college. The community and all would be awesome as well, especially seeing as I hail from a not-so-big city. But in view of the financial situation, the community and other factors are secondary.
Btw, I would again request the rest of you to post your stats and the colleges you were accepted/denied. I wanna see what sort of chance I have. At the moments things appear pretty grim. I'm the average good student with nothing really to be proud of like qualifying to an IO TC or AIR top 10 in some competition. KVPY and NTSE are probably the best I've been able to do and 11th school marks suck coz of IIT-JEE coaching mania :P

i am in the same boat as tetrisfan.Diversity is the main reason why i am choosing US Universities.
Also i would like our fellow indians to plz post their stats
regards,
romil

gary: What is your profile like? School marks, board marks, extracurriculars, SAT scores...everything put together?

Omg wow. You people are suddenly rocking this thread...:D

HOLA tetrisfan, long time!

IMHO, NEVER GO FOR IIT COACHING...Z.Z.
Just focus on School, it is enough for IITs as well.
