Indian firms very rarely recognise degrees from other countries. Post-Graduate degrees will be recognised but not undergraduate degrees. So, in India both you and your singaporean friend will probably be in the same soup.

Doesn’t the US have a slight edge in terms of prestige in Indian firms?

I suppose that USA does have a slightly better advantage. But overall, if you wish to work in India, the best option would be to study in India. I mean, they would probably chose IIT or even BITS Pilani over MIT. (I got this after interacting with representatives of several top companies during my internship in mumbai)

I don’t think a degree from a top US university would ever be looked down upon, though.

It is not looked down upon. It is just not regarded. A degree from an Indian institution will be preferable when compared to an american degree.

umm… well- a friend and i did a li’l finding out… we created fake accounts on 3 jobsearch websites (one each from india, singapore and USA)- and put 4 comparable grads (in terms of research, internships, GPA etc. etc.) from UCLA, MIT, NUS(Singapore) and IIT Delhi (India- duh!)…

so this is how it turned out…

for the singapore website… MIT got the highest offers (clear ownage), UCLA and NUS got the same offers (though NUS had more local singapore firms- UCLA was more of multinationals), IIT got the least…

for the indian website… IIT>NUS>MIT>UCLA!! (NUS>MIT is pretty ***!)

for the US website- very surprisingly, UCLA got the highest offers (though this might just be in terms of number… not salary- cuz this website didn’t show the salaries-you-can-expect-part), followed by MIT (though i’m pretty sure (and so is EVERYONE else) that MIT pwns UCLA!). third was NUS and fourth was IIT…

now obviously- this isn’t a completely reliable source… but this does indicate that well- it’s all so damn arbitrary!!

@thebigcheese- yup! i agree… after seeing the results of this 2 month-fake-jobhunt… but then- i find it rather queer that recruiters of firms like infosys, wipro and IBM AND MICROSOFT INDIA (biggest shockers) chose NUS grads over UCLA and MIT ones! (is this cuz they’re expecting that the MIT and UCLA people would probably be expecting higher salaries?) i mean… i can’t come up with any other plausible explanation for this- why wouldn’t a tech recruiter know of MIT?!

@tetris: that’s what i thought… haha! i guess india still prefers asian (rote-learning-theory-focused-college-grads) college grads!

@quasi: your locations are awesomely funky! lol!

(:

@thebigcheese: but why? apparently singapore firms WANT their employees to come from different places… they say it’s cuz they have different perspectives and it helps… india… hmm… seems to believe in the opposite!

Indian firms do not quite understand the american education system. They believe that indian colleges give a better education. They think that American colleges are “easier” and so the students are not quite as smart.

^ Agreed 10 char

Does anybody have any comments for this thread-
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/736937-how-many-subject-tests-enough-colleges-where-just-recommended.html#post1062810957 ???

Sooo what else is new?

General Indianness.

That’s not new :p

A couple of dogs are doing it in front of my house.

Ugh. That really wasn’t the sort of imagery I needed right now after an innuendo-filled phone call with my classmate.

Is anybody seeing the ******** going on in NDTV about the board exams??

Yeah, it just got over.

Missed it. What happened? I’m for the 10th boards being scrapped, btw.

^I’m not. I’d sort of want to know about all the variables involved in boards for ISC, which is really the important exam anyway.

And I definitely don’t want a uniform board for all the states. That doesn’t make sense.

Wait, where did the uniform board spring up from?
