The influence of the SAT2s.

Hey guys, I have lurked for awhile and read some of the things posted and I have finally decided to post my major worry about getting into the school.

My SAT2s are shoddy at best.

Back when I took them I was not really sure if I was even going to apply to a school that needed them and I took them on a whim without really studying, and they aren't in my field of study (Civil or Biomedical Engineering).

I made a 650 US History and a 630 Math 1 (This was without a calculator, and I hadn't brushed up on my trig....but enough of my excuses)

I am wondering how much of a role these play on the actual application. I have strong extracurriculars, academics, my regular SAT is a 2050. My essays are nice and I have a couple of great recommendations.

Would I get shot down because of my SAT2s?

Rice is my dream school, and if it is worth anything I am from out of state and have taken college courses. I also had a good interview.

I guess this is a kinda sorta maybe chance thread. >_>

I am pretty sure SAT II will play a role since it is actually required instead of being optional. Your SAT II scores are not "bad", they are just around the national average, which is on the low side for where you are applying to

See that is what I concerned with. I know that they are low for the school, and I am just wondering how the admissions office views them. My counselor said that they would used more for placement, but she hasn't been right on many things...(She screwed up two of my other applications. It all got worked out though)

My son's SAT IIs were similar and he was admitted with merit money. It's what's in the rest of your application that's important. The SAT II scores are just a part of the total picture. They won't keep you out if you're a strong candidate, but they will be considered.

all your scores are low for Rice
^^^that was an anomoly. patsmom's son probably had an app that was strong in other areas. maybe he won a big award or had really great leadership or something.
but you are definitely not out of the running. If i had to make a guess, i would put you on the wait list. good luck. didnt mean to depress you

I know the SAT2 scores are low for Rice... >_> I didn't really take them seriously at the time which was a mistake.

If you read my post you would see that I was asking more about how much they would hurt me. I relatively strong in all other areas except the SAT2's.

i personally don't think your relatively low scores are that big of a deal. rice is a selective school but it's not ivy-level selective. if the rest of your stats are good it's definitely not gonna make or break you. i think john c was being unrealistically hard on you.

From the Rice Website

^^OUCH that list kills me a little inside.. but in the words of a great friend, I made Math I and Math II my homie :D

it seems important since it is required.. and Rice is such a top tier school that EVERYTHING seems to matter..

Math IIC 735
Chemistry 714
Physics 719

quite overwhelming..

i wonder why Math I is so low.. i thought it was pretty easy..

Probably because people who are strong in math generally don't take Math IC.

Korean (Listening) 800

Haha, everyone who took Korean got perfect.

^^true.. (Dorian)... i took both because i didn't know what else i should take.. i only needed 2 in math and sci.. math ii is graded easier than math i

one part of your app won't make or break your success.
it's whats in the rest of your app that counts now.
