The inside scoop and why im choosing UCSC

Ok guys I just got back from a long day trip to visit UC Santa Cruz for the first time and ill explain everything. I came from san diego, but we flew into San Jose Airport. We took a tour and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! like everything is lushious green and pretty, and im a guy. Honestly im not all into that rainforest stuff but the scenery was RIDICULOUS sooooo nice def worth checking out, it will MAKE you sign your SIR that day. Anyway, I have a friend there who gave me some inside scoops, saying college 9 and 10 are new but boring. Shes in COwell but their all pretty much freshy noobs (im a transfer). Anyway if you transfer there youll be at the transfer community (porter college) the village or UTC. another tour guide gave me the inside scoop on the greek life.

Dorm life: He said that to be honest the RA's are mostly sick but might be like "as long as i dont see it i dont care" attitude. so you party animals you can have kickbacks just dont rage

Greek Life: He was in a frat and he said to be honest there are no like fat ass house parties on campus, most of greek life is in downtown SC. BUT the county i guess hates the college students. Anyway keep in mind I was simply visiting to see if I wanted to go to the college. He said dude honestly tonight we are throwing a party if your staying you should come. I MEAN WHO DOES THAT? that was really cool, but i had to decline we had to get back to SD.

HIPPIES???: yes there are some hippies there, and weirdos. But like the atmosphere is so liberal that everyone accepts everyone you know? like I saw hot blondes with goth guys, all types of stuff just an awesome vibe. And its not crazy hippy status at the campus, maybe like 5 percent or something. If your in downtown thats freaking hippie central. YES everyone smokes weed there too.

downtown SC? Cool towards the beach. You get a "little" college town feel, but its def not CALberk or anything like that. beach has its own boardwalk with a pier, shops, arcade, games, food, rides. That was a good thing for me to see.

Drinks on campus? Yes, they have some pizza place that sells beer but its the only place on campus. Fridays happy hour is a pint for $3.50.

Girls and Guys: Girls were HOTTTT here. I mean most of em. i like meat on my girls and I saw some hotties. You wont be disappointed for sure. As for the guys (for you ladies) mostly I saw guys that wear tight black jeans, t-shirt and a beanie. But they were really cool like everyone there is cool.

I mean to be honest I was leaning towards UCSD, but when you visit UCSC it like catches you and draws you in. I cannot see ANYONE deciding not to go there. It was just such an awesome feeling. It doesnt matter who you are, what you look like, where you come from, anything. Everyone is going to accept you and be friendly to you. Just go there for a day it will change your life. I cant wait to fill my SIR (but theyre lagging on my financial aid status award which is pretty lame).

If you guys have ANY questions about tranportation or anything else, please message me ill be happy to share my experience with you.

Happy bidding on colleges

Wait until you see all financial aid offers before deciding.

Congrats - UCSC is a great school. When I was a senior in high school, I liked it more than UCSD and would have chosen it over UCSD as well.

yeah Ill wait until I actually see the awards. @phantasmagoric what college did you actually end up choosing?

^ Stanford, partly because it’s a lot like UCSC (similar campus, weather, Bay Area, liberal, etc.).

oh ya dude i would have done the same, missing out on stanford would be a mistake! and they have an actual college town with the football team and stuff congrats to you bud

ya i was wondering about UCSC life too because i’m from SoCal/Orange County area and was told by some friends that the area was offputting but had a feeling they were over exaggerating. I just signed my SIR today and am pretty excited although i did have some doubts as to my enjoyment of the social life there. (either way i wanted to pursure my undergrad legal studies there) I also heard that the greek life was actually not that prevalent, so do you thinking rushing is a good idea at UCSC?

Well im assuming the greek life at ucsc is pretty much nonexistent because there are only 5 frats and 9 sororities. I think the guy might be overexaggerating. I mean if you join a frat every week you will be partying and hooking up with sor girls no doubt, but the majority of the campus will not be impressed. Thats mostly due to the atmosphere at UCSC which is like be yourself. That being said, I might rush at UCSC too, because they seemed pretty chill and more like me. Ill be honest I love to drink and party. Im a transfer student at 21, but if your a freshman then it might be. OC is similar to SD so we have similar likes im sure.

Beware though: do not join a frat if you are unable to maintain your grades. If you do join a frat you will expand your social life of course. Its not so prevalent to me because I have a couple friends that already go there from SD

oh but pertaining to your question, no you do not have to join a frat to get a good social life. The enviornment is so awesome and everyone is so willing to be friendly, your bound to make friends. BUT i did hear that their idea of partying is usually just smoking weed, but if your in a frat well… your in a frat lol and will be drinking and partying.

Keep in mind that youll be in a dorm for 9 months with other students wondering exactly like you if the social life is awesome. So if you put yourself out there you will make friends with all your dorm buddies

Although I already submitted by SIR to UCSC, this post just confirmed how completely excited I am about transfer! :)
