This topic does not just apply to Dartmouth, but rather all ivies in general. IF one were to have a magnificent interview, is that a big push in the descision? Just wondering...

..........................

Probably not...

is it a small push? I mean, how much can it help? If one is borderline, might it help one gain admission?

all those questions are welcome to be answered! lol

Magnificent interview? Would probably push a candidate with grades and scores toward the upper end of the middle 50% into the admit pile. But magnificent by most people's standards and magnificent by Dartmouth's standards could be two completely different things. A large portion of a college interview rating is based on academic initiative, so one could have the best personal qualities in the world, but still get a substandard score because of lack of academic interest.

i can't see it making or breaking an application unless the interviewer emphatically said "do not let this person in".

Hi, got a call from an interviewer, said the interview would be informal, but I have never really had an official interview before and do not want a bad interview to ruin my chances for the big D. How important will the interview be, what sort of questions do they ask, and what are some useful suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Chris

I realize this is probably a useless question, but I'm nervous enough to ask. My interviewer had actually said in January that I would probably get a likely letter because he was fighting my ED deferral. I haven't gotten one... can I still take him seriously?

"If you had a year off what would you do?"
"What do you like/dislike most about your school?"
"If you could change one thing about your school what would it be?"
"What challenges did you face and overcome in school?"
"Tell us about your activities."

Be electrified, alert, and yourself (if you are not a bore/jerk/smartas*, lol).

naw, most interviewers dont ask that. lol It's basically a conversation where u can ask questions and they ask u questions. It is not a test. However, just be confident.

yea...my interviewer was pretty structured--he went from one of the above questions to the other

mine grilled me on U.S. foreign policy (dang for mentioning to him that i'm taking topics in globalization, lol), and i was pretty caught off-guard, but kept my cool (or so i thought, lol). after a while tho, we started talking about my life's adventures (or more like, tribulations), dartmouth and its nurturing atmosphere, and later as my interviewer was walking me to the metro station we found out that he's actually a really good friend of a teacher at my school. it was a great interview.

my dartmouth interviewer once asked what my views on teen sex were.

damn that was a toughy. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

Hi truegibberish,

I think that it was inappropriate for your interviewer to make those statements to you when they are pretty much explicitly ae told not to make statements remotely promising some on an admit as most interviewers do not have that kind of power in the admissions process. In addition it does nothting to alleviate some of the stress you are felling right about now.

Yes s/he can comment on your deferral and state that they feel you should be an admit, but ultimately the decision remains with the adcoms. If the likely letter comes (and i hope this does happen for you and many others as the second wave should start next week) I think your interviewer has placed a lot of undue pressure on you. If the likely does not come, don't panic because the majority of admits will not recieve a likely letter.

Sybbie, thanks for your support through this. I thought his comment was strange/ungrounded as well, but it was worth the check. Since no one but the admissions office can give that one true answer, I was suspicious. These upcoming likely letter / admissions dates seem so close; it's just not fair. But, again, thanks for your support, and maybe we can survive it after all.

What are the topics on the report that the interviewer sends in?

The interview is worthless.........Before my interview started my interviewer said, "Let me tell you this upfront....the interview has zero effect on your chances of admission. This is really just a chance for YOU to ask me questions about Dartmouth."

He only asked me my stats (GPA, rank, tests) so he would have accurate info for the reccomendation form.
