The Journey Class of 2020 ... Denials, redirections, etc.

@mtmcmt, My S was released from Texas State’s priority hold yesterday as well and that was a real heart breaker. After going to San Marcos for the callback, it moved to the top of his list. He loved the school, program, faculty, students and had the most positive audition experience of all his auditions. He was so happy and proud to be one of the 40 priority holds. But in the end, knowing you were in the top 5% or so doesn’t really matter when you are rejected. It almost hurts more to know you were so close. He was interviewed at Penn State so he knows he made it past the cut, but he also knows 6 other boys had already received acceptances when he auditioned, so his chances are small. Still haven’t heard from them. Ithaca and Pace are also top choices and when he sees others being accepted every day, the realization that the chances for him at those schools is decreasing. And he knows people who have been accepted at those schools who he’s “just as good as” which is frustrating. He is lucky in that he does have a couple acceptances, but those were his safeties at the bottom of his list, so he’s disappointed. We knew what we were getting into, knew the acceptance rates, knew that it isn’t always talent that defines acceptance, but it doesn’t make it any easier. I think what they don’t tell you is that this may be the worst part…waiting, worrying! And second guessing everything (for instance, we did not use a coach and it’s clear the kids that used Mary Anna Dennard and MTCA are having more success). And it’s a struggle to know whether you should even be looking at these boards or the kids facebook group where you see all the acceptances. I’m so happy for the kids being accepted or even on wait lists, but as they are accepted and your kids aren’t it’s also a slap in the face. Coming here gives me some sanity check and support though because it helps me see that I’m not alone, my son’s not alone. Because, it’s so hard to explain to people who aren’t going through this. Everyone is shocked by the number of schools he applied to and auditioned at. Everyone says oh he’s so talented he’ll have so many choices. Everyone says he’s a boy, it’s easy for boys. Well that just isn’t the reality. It’s not over yet. Trying to have hope that more acceptances will come in and if not, he will end up at the right school for him, even if he doesn’t think it’s the right school now. Be strong and have faith that’s all we can do!

So, Western Michigan called us last night. To congratulate D on her ACADEMIC acceptance. Ugh, talk about an adrenaline rush when we heard “Call from Western Michigan” on the caller ID, followed by a complete crash! Don’t they know we are waiting for a REALLY important call from them? Hahaha… still waiting, waiting, waiting.

There are lots of people every year who get late acceptances and everything turns around very fast. Hang in there.

There are lots of encouraging posts on this thread right now about our kids landing in just the right program. Thank you! In that vein, I have a question about a school I hadn’t heard of before today. Emory & Henry College in VA. The Big List on here says it is a non-audition BFA, but their website says there is an audition. Does anyone know more about this?

Hang in there! Remember that not all the kids getting those offers can accept at all the schools. Everything will work out!! Easier said than done, I know.

@MTMom98, I SO understand what you mean about this being easier for boys. Yes, the percentages are a lot better, but a near-hit is the same as a miss, except it hurts more. My son has two male school friends who made it into top programs last year, so he gets to deal with those well-meaning comments on how he should be able to get in anywhere. I’m sorry to hear about TSU–it must be especially hard after the callback visit. Perhaps it’s the case that going through rejections from favorite schools is how our kids get to love the school they end up in–they appreciate that the school saw something special in them and gradually decide it is the best fit for them. I hope there is more good news on the way to you and your son.

Anyone heard anything from SCAD that auditioned at unifieds?

@emdpraze I think you should start a new thread to ask your question. More folks may see it that way and you might get a faster response.

D is still waiting for her 1st artistic acceptance as well. She has her final audition at OCU this weekend, so as much as I want news, I hope the bad news waits until next week. She is still waiting to hear from 10 schools, so hopefully 1 comes through. My thoughts go out to all of you living through this tortuous process as well.

What is SCAD? Thanks!

It’s still on the early side to get decisions back at many schools. I know it is hard but hang in there. Things have a way of working out in some fashion.

I’m not so fond of the often stated “he/she will land where he/she is meant to be.” But I do like the comment in an earlier post that “he/she will bloom where he/she is planted.” Once your child is in college next year, this admissions stuff will be behind him/her and not a focus. Right now, you are all immersed in it and so the sum total of the results is on your mind. Next year, this will be a memory and your child will hopefully enjoy his/her new experiences wherever that may be.

Bravo @soozievt !!

SCAD is Savannah College of Art & Design

Victoria Bussert from Baldwin Wallace had a great comment at Sunday’s audition, which is come Fall, regardless of which school everyone ends up being accepted into and going to, all the kids will be at the same point - beginning their training. The playing field gets leveled to a certain extent. @soozievt I definitely feel that it’s how focused the kids are on growing as a person and performer and what effort and hard work the kids put into their training regardless of where they go that will ultimately make the difference in their ongoing success. So, I love the reference to blooming where planted!

Thanks!

@mtmcmt @claire74 @SongnDanceMom - We are right there with you! Still waiting for that first artistic acceptance. This is such a weird process. My D passed 8/9 prescreens and has been working professionally for 8 years. She didn’t decide she wanted to go for a BFA till this last summer. We have also gotten the “you don’t have to worry she will get in somewhere”- but I do question as this process is so subjective and just …difficult. And most people don’t understand that. Thankfully people on this board do! We still have quite a few schools to hear from, so haven’t given up hope yet. But I guess if our list wasn’t varied enough- we will find out soon. While I think my D would be pretty devastated if she doesn’t get in somewhere, she would likely come up with an alternate plan pretty quickly. I guess having experience in dealing with rejection in the professional world is helping us during this whole process! Gotta look at the positives, right? Hoping for really awesome news for everyone soon!!!

This is my first post - my daughter will kill me if she figures out that I have finally joined after 2 or 3 years of lurking! This waiting is excruciating, and I appreciate all the sharing here - it REALLY helps to know I am not alone. In the area I live, my kid just about is the only one who is interested in pursuing MT, so I don’t have local support. Daughter is obsessively checking mailbox, email, Acceptd, etc. Ugh.

My daughter auditioned for 11 schools, all on campus except for one. She also applied to two non-MT programs, was accepted to one, awaiting decision on other. She has been accepted to (I think) 5 Honors Programs at the schools so far.

Ohio Northern BFA MT- academically and artistically accepted with scholarship
Millikin BFA MT- academically and artistically accepted with scholarships
Marymount Manhattan BA MT - academically and artistically accepted with scholarship, awaiting word on talent scholarship

Otterbein - academically accepted and Waitlisted

Wright State - academically accepted with scholarship, no artistic decision yet

Michigan - awaiting decision
CMU - awaiting decision
Baldwin Wallace - awaiting decision
Point Park - awaiting decision

Kent State - going this Friday

CCM - No

I saw that some people have already heard back from Baldwin Wallace - does anyone know how long their decisions usually take?

Thank you!!

I didn’t mean to seem insensitive with my post, @stagedoormama - with interruptions, it took a while to get my message up, and the last few messages didn’t show up before I posted my message.

No worries!

@emdpraze I sent you a pm
