My D got a call this evening from her dream BFA MT program welcoming her to the program. When I went online to check on housing deposits and other details, it stills says that her application to the university is undecided and that a decision will be made by March 16. What now? D has told the whole world she was accepted. Is it possible to be accepted to the BFA program but not the school?
It it would be extremely unusual, so I would definitely call the school admissions and figure out what is going on!
Please don’t think I am looking a gift horse in the mouth. I am very grateful for the acceptances I have received. I just would like feedback. There is one program that I like very much and it has many advantages. Beautiful campus, great faculty , senior showcase, not too far from home but not too close either :)) the Hangup is that I found out a girl I know from my town was admitted yesterday and I just really don’t think she’s a nice person (inconsiderate, not a team player, very conceited, etc) and I don’t love the thought of spending 4 years in a small program with her. Thoughts? Thank you:)
@emdpraze Not sure if anyone has answered you yet, about to head out to work and saw your post. Emory and Henry is now an auditioned BFA program! Very few people ever mention it here though. We are in VA but about 4 hours away from there, D is planning to audition soon.
@theaterwork If you have much info about Emory and Henry, I would be grateful to hear it as well
@lisab6114 So sorry to hears this. Where on the portal did it list the rejection?
@MTmom98 does your portal say this exactly?"“when a decision has been made it will be displayed here.”
My daughters portal hasn’t changed since we initially applied. on the left where it says Application status it simply outlines the process and how to apply. The last line says "
Once a decision has been made on your prescreen materials, it will be posted here." to the right of that is an Application status which shows everything is completed. There was a check mark next to schedule audition and I just noticed that when I hover over that it invites us to make an audition- but I didn’t even realize that info was there and thought it was just generic. We received an email to audition or I would have missed it.
There is no mention on her portal that the decision will be displayed here. : /
@DanceMamaRose20 (and @stagedoormama), indeed it is VERY possible to be accepted to the MT program and not the school. It happens. For many of the schools, the admission to the university/college is separate from the MT BFA admittance. You can be accepted academically and not to the MT (artistic) program (fairly common), or rejected from the school academically and accepted to the MT (artistic) program (not as common but it happens every year). I know several people that it has happened to. For the schools that have both hurdles, you need to jump BOTH to go to that school.
That being said, maybe your D’s portal has not been updated. I would call the school.
@mspamela I’ll pm you
@monkey13 This is not happy news. I have a call in to the school… The thought of “winning the lottery” and getting in to a super exclusive program, but not getting into the university (Ds grades are good) seems absurd. I’ll keep you posted.
@Autmlvs615 - In the application status section it says:
Admission to your program includes both a talent review and an academic review. Both must be favorable to gain admission to the program.
If you have not already done so, please submit the interview, portfolio, or audition requirement for your major outlined at artsandarchitecture.psu.edu/howtoapply.
Once a decision has been made, it will be posted here.
@monkey13 - I have never heard of a school notifying you that you have been accepted artistically and then rejecting you academically. I thought generally academics are done 1st, so they would know you were not accepted academically before they say yes artistically. And it seems that the most academically competitive schools: Mich, NYU, CMU(I realize grades are not really a factor there) are “all or nothing” type schools - meaning if you don’t make the cut artistically you are not accepted to the schools. Does Ithaca do this? It would seem especially strange to get the personal phone call that a kid is “in” if it wasn’t fully settled. But I know absolutely nothing about FSU, which I believe is the school in question.
False alarm! All is as it should be. I am just, as usual, getting ahead of myself. Thanks for the support!
Hurray @DanceMamaRose20 - Congrats to your D!!
@Autmlvs615 Also, not sure if this is correct or not, but I interpret the wording in his application status as indicating that his academic review is complete but they are waiting for audition decision. So the difference could just be related to academic review status (my son applied to all schools in early Fall).
@mspamela I just heard about E&H yesterday. My D is applying, but we might not be able to go for an in-person audition. We’re a bit far away. Her video audition on Acceptd might have to do.
@theaterwork Thanks!
@toowonderful For Michigan, at the info session prior to auditions starting, they specifically gave a pat yourself on the back sort of thing saying that not only did passing the prescreen mean you passed artistically, but that you had also been given the once over by admissions and were green-lighted academically too. Then you could audition. Of course that’s just one school. I feel like they discussed this at the Syracuse info session as well, but I think there the academic admission component came after the audition/artistic selection process.
Congratulations @DanceMamaRose20! Woo-hoo!!!
is it just the myithaca portal that should still be open if you have not been denied? saw someone post about homerconect on another thread…
1st of all, the question seems moot b/c DanceMamaRose contacted the school and all is well- seems more like a portal issue. BUT @rampions - Aren’t both Michigan and Syracuse all or nothing schools? Meaning you won’t be accepted to the school unless you are accepted to the program (Syracuse was when D applied/was accepted 2 years ago) What I mean to say is that you hear ALL the time about schools where you get the academic acceptance well ahead (places like Pace leap to mind) and you have to wait for artistic. There are places where you find out both at once (NYU, CMU, Boston and Syracuse were all that way for my D) But I have never heard of a place where you are admitted artistically, and then have to wait to find out if you were academically admitted to the actual school. Again, granted, it’s not like I know everyone’s process - my D only auditioned for 7 BFAs. But it seems a strange way to go about things
@toowonderful, no, Ithaca does not do that…their process is blended into one. It is one acceptance there. I personally know kids who got accepted artistically but rejected academically at Adelphi, Illinois Wesleyan and Emerson. I’m sure there are others. There are also posts like these: “Academics are really important as we found out the hard way. My son was accepted by one of his top choices for MT, but was rejected academically by admissions, and that admissions weren’t interested in how much the MT department wanted him. He learned that not being a serious student has its consequences” on CC…it happens.
