The Journey Class of 2020 ... Denials, redirections, etc.

Penn State is a great quality program, my S really liked it. He just made another choice. BUT he knows several kids there who did accept last year and they are very talented.

D applied to Hofstra, 2 months ago; the portal updated to say a decision has been made and a letter in the mail will come with more information, after calling a few times we were told they only just sent the decision letter. We haven’t received it yet but they said the portal will not update before she gets the letter. I guess that is bad news? I know other students once accepted the portal shows the acceptance online, so if they specifically said it will not update for her online before getting the letter…are we getting bad news?

D is a dancer and singer (MT and pop). She has been dancing for 10 years and is in a pre-professional company. She has performed in musicals at her HS and at a local community theatre and has done summer programs at Joffrey, AMDA and performing arts summer camp.

She applied to: Alabama, American, Elon, Emerson, FSU, Indiana, Miami, Michigan, Pace, Penn State, and Syracuse. She passed all six prescreens: FSU, Indiana, Michigan, Pace, Penn State and Syracuse.

She did walk-ins at Chicago Unifieds for Utah and Texas State. She tried to walk in to HARTT but they had no space and encouraged her to apply and submit tapes online. She missed her audition at American because we all came back from Chicago with the stomach flu! They were very understanding and allowed her to submit tapes.

D also applied to College of Charleston (BA Theatre and Dance) and Tulane (BFA MT audition in sophomore year).

She’s been accepted academically so far at Alabama, College of Charleston and Pace. She has not received any academic rejections yet. She got her first artistic rejection yesterday from Indiana. Very disappointing. More to come (we know) and hopefully a few acceptances too!

I like your name @DanceMamaRose !

Stalking the mailbox and emails daily is exhausting! My D has 3 more auditions to go…headed out this weekend for 2! Everyone remember this is like a game of chess gotta see where the pieces land before students and programs make their next moves!

We have our last 2 this Sunday (Wagner) and Monday (MSM) - can’t wait to be done!

@ohmtmom my son turned down Baylor, Coastal Carolina, Emerson, Hartt, Indiana University, Ithaca, University of Miami, Michigan State, Ohio Northern, Otterbein, Penn State, Rider, Shenandoah, Syracuse and Western Michigan to go to TCU. For all of you waiting and still auditioning…I wish I knew then…what I know now… First…BREATHE!! Everything will work out…I promise! It is really easy to get caught up with hearing of kids getting in here and there…second guessing…oh my son or daughter should have applied to xyz school and comparing programs etc…I get it…I did it. The truth of the matter is that if a program is a BFA program…it is damn hard to get into and is most likely a great program despite lists that random people make and put on FB and the like. Faculty of programs change so often,you will find profs that have taught in several different programs…it really is a small community of talented professionals. When choosing schools, a student needs to keep in mind that they will be there for 4 years, so they should make sure the school offers the things they care about and want to be a part of and can be a part of. TCU has all and MORE than what my son could possibly have imagined He is so happy! Furthermore, if your child is going the BA route, that is awesome too…Success comes from talent, drive, perseverance, passion and let’s face it…patience and a sense of humor…not the school you went to or what letters come after your major. There are several examples of wonderful talent coming from schools we all have never heard of or even some that never even went to school… Breathe… Break Legs…xo

@tmygirl, Holy smoke! That’s a lot of acceptances. I thought kids like your son were a myth.Well, I hope there is another unicorn out there this year who will turn down ten-plus acceptances and make room for lesser mortals! Good to hear your son made the right choice!

@claire74 there are several kids that get into a bunch of programs, my son certainly wasn’t the only one. Truth i is, there is a place for everyone I am looking forward to hearing about '20 :slight_smile:

@tmygirl, He must be incredibly talented and have the mystical wow factor that auditioners look for. Was he refused from any school, or does he prove the theory that auditors know talent the minute they spot it?

It is highly, highly unusual to get that many acceptances, though, so please don’t fret if you or your child “only” gets one! As @tmygirl said, “The truth of the matter is that if a program is a BFA program…it is damn hard to get into and is most likely a great program despite lists that random people make and put on FB and the like.” Any auditioned program and many non-audition programs are incredibly hard to get into! Many are tougher to get into than med school… Each acceptance–no matter how many one gets–is a celebration!

@myloves, thank you for that! (steps back from the ledge and re-assumes waiting mode)

@claire74 He was rejected from Baldwin Wallace, Carnegie Mellon, Pace and was on Priority Hold until April @ Texas State. He didn’t pass Elon or Michigan’s prescreens.

@tmygirl, thanks for sharing!

Keep in mind that your child only needs ONE. He/she can only attend one school. At the end of the day, or moreover, next fall, it won’t matter one bit how many your kid got into. It will be a distant memory.

My theory is getting into ONE is GREAT…a delicious scoop of ice cream. Having options is like having a sundae. Getting into a top choice is a cherry on top. In all cases, it is pretty sweet.

Great analogy, @soozievt ! It’s absolutely correct.

@claire74 , I would’ve been practically hyperventilating, lol!

I think it also can be tough to get rejections even if one gets lots of acceptances. Great life lessons, though, and continued preparation for their lives in theatre… And perspective is so, so important…

@tmygirl thank you for sharing! The waiting is the hardest most difficult part. I am so so glad your son ended up where he is happy and he found the right fit for him!

I’ve seen this on here recently but wondered which schools admit you academically, even if you don’t know the status of the BFA or don’t get in the BFA program. My D has been accepted to FSU and TCU among others already, for example. It makes it exciting and better than an overall rejection.

That is, she has been accepted to the Universities–whether or not the BFA comes through.

@ohmtmom Pace, Webster, SMU (acting) and Univ of Minn/Guthrie (acting) also admit academically prior to/separate from an arts decision. I think Penn State may also.
