The Journey Class of 2020 ... Denials, redirections, etc.

@ohmtmom my D is at Ball State and LOVES it! They have a really supportive and positive atmosphere there! She auditioned on campus and it was her best audition by far. The auditors were reacting to her and engaging her. She came out saying it didn’t feel like an audition at all. Also, while we were there the current students were actively seeking out the auditioners and talking to them about the program and answering questions. We are excited to see her in her first production in April. At Ball State there are two general auditions. One in the fall for the Spring shows and one in the spring for the fall shows. Freshman don’t perform their first semester and seniors don’t perform their last semester (they are busy with showcases). There are also auditions both semesters for the student run productions. She has already done some performing though because they had a little holiday show they put together and a lot of times the acting and mt kids help out with projects for directing and writing majors. I am really amazed by these kids…this major is not for the faint of heart! It is a LOT of work. Very busy, packed weeks! I’m very proud of her! I also cherish those audition day memories! It was a crazy time, but it was precious time we had together. I miss her & know she will probably never really live at home again!

We (FSU) will send out letters to all applicants at the end of next week. We don’t make decisions until we have seen everyone, so the decision making process will begin Sunday night after the last audition. Usually accepted students are called just before letters go out. I am more than happy to speak with parents or applicants about the audition after results have gone out. I hope this helps relieve the anxiety just a tiny bit!

I am still stumped on the PSU thing. They normally take around 16… I realize they have a new director but 6/6 seems mighty low.

From posts on a facebook group alot of the kids are on, it seems like 7 boys were already accepted to PSU before the last on-campus audition was held. They all said they received their acceptance letters within a week or two after their auditions. So that doesn’t give those of us with sons who haven’t heard yet a chance if they are only taking those 7. Perhaps the remaining boys that haven’t heard are being considered for wait list spots?

@mtmamma2020 I thought that was a typical class size for PSU–12-14. In fact that was one of the virtues extolled by a faculty member to my D when telling her how PSU has better things to offer her than other programs like Michigan’s. Perhaps @tmygirl can comment. I think she has an S there. D, of course, hasn’t been accepted to Michigan but that was the example used. Also, I can’t be sure on the number of boys. But the source did say 6 girls. Perhaps he’s misinformed. We’ll know soon enough.

Just a note: PSU lost 2 boys…one (a sophomore) just left the MT program, and another (who actually may have left last year) is now a junior at another school. So, maybe they are getting more boys this year to make up for the ones who left…? I guess what I’m trying to say is, we don’t know for sure what the numbers are. Don’t give up until you get a no.

A PSU rep said that in the audition room?

I have a freshman MT at PSU and there are 12 (was 13). Each class is 12-14.

@ohmtmom – all was said in an audition setting. I’ll leave it at that. All came from faculty.

Do they change the portal? Or is it all by mail?

@craz4mtsmom thanks for sharing! Kudos to you for doing what you thought was in your D’s best interest. I homeschooled two of our boys for a time for various reasons. They are both in college now. But I didn’t always get support from the community at large. I remember doing a lot of explaining. And, I understand where you are coming from with the friends & family outside of this little MT world. No one on the outside understands how competitive these programs are. D has had to explain why she is applying to schools that no one in our circle has ever heard of. It’s been a big learning curve.

Thanks @MTRaleighmom for the timely article! We need the perspective and the boost!

Finally, congrats on the holds @CTDramaMom and @Autmlvs615! CCM!! A hold there is a feather in your hat no matter what happens. Hope you get more good news soon!

We got one bad news and one good news so far. S got a rejection from Otterbein yesterday and an accept from Northern Colorado today.

That’s awesome for the acceptance! Congrats @Tahuna

I second that @Tahuna! Congratulations!

@happydancer98 … I think tmygirl’s son is at TCU.

I can’t find where I put my car keys 20 minutes ago, but I’m pretty sure I remember her son!

@HappyDancer98 my son was accepted @ Penn State, but chose not to go… As I remember it, a lot of the boys that were offered a spot went elsewhere, so they went into the waitlist. This happens often, so don’t be afraid of the numbers… That happened with Otterbein too…my son and a couple other boys went elsewhere and they went to their waitlist…I view priority holds and waitlists as wins…don’t worry about numbers everyone… I promise your child will end up exactly where they were meant to be!! My son is at TCU and LOVES it!! Break Legs everyone!! Looking forward to hearing where your kids end up!!

I can’t believe Penn State would say that about another program–moreover about Michigan. Like really?

I have formerly posted under a different user name… my account is all messed up (in a continual redirect loop) so I got a second account! I love reading everyone else’s stories! Makes me feel sane:). My D attends a public non PA high school. Only does drama at her school but has attended summer camps, is in chorale, and has taken some private voice and dance lessons.

Where all did your son turn down to go to tcu? That speaks a lot about tcu!

Congratulations @deesthree on those acceptances! So great! I trust that it will come together. Thanks for the reassurance.

@tmygirl and @KaMaMom – thanks for the clarification and insight into the wait list at PSU and other schools.

@ohmtmom – It was clear that they were seriously interested in D attending PSU so they were trying to show what makes PSU special. PSU does have a great program with a large number of faculty devoted to MT. I imagine they’ve lost first picks to Michigan in the past. Crazy that D was rejected but we know that anything can happen in this process.
