The reason I ask is that I seem to remember our son getting "rated" (as in the graded part) for "pro knowledge" most Sunday evenings throughout the year....

and what happens with those "rates" (grades)? Are they factored into the OOM?

Assuming things haven't changed too much....

Plebes are "rated" (a term not in use during my time) during come-arounds. Come-arounds used to take place twice a day. In the morning (before morning formation) you came around to your 3/C, and before noon meal formation you came around to your 2/C. Obviously, it was the noon come-around you sweated most. If you screwed that up, you might be "invited" to come around again before evening meal formation.

Each week had a Pro Topic. US Armor, Soviet Submarines, Anti-Surface Warfare, etc. There was also a Platform of the Week, which consisted of a ship or aircraft from either the US or the USSR. The come arounds tested you on your knowledge of the pro stuff (which was outlined in a Pro Book, which you kept with you, usually in your cover, at all times. No scores were given during come-arounds, but your performance was noted.

Sunday evenings you took a Pro Quiz on the previous week's Pro Knowledge, and that score was factored into your performance grade, which in turn impacted your OOM.

I would be shocked if the system remains the same after so many years and changes to the world, but I suspect the framework of the system is at least recognizably similar. I hope our resident Mids will give the more current description as I, too, am curious about how they handle it these days.

I almost had t-shirts made up that said, "I hate this place"

Have them made to say, "IHTFP". Everyone knows what it is, and if someone who you'd rather not give the real answer to comes up and asks/demands, just smile and say, "I Have Truly Found Paradise". ;)

Another alternative meaning is "I Hope There's a Friday Parade".

Board code prevents me from posting the true meaning. :D
