Candidate Letter

My DS got his candidate email letter today. This is going to be one very busy kid over the summer. Between NASS, the Academy application, a sport camp, getting his material ready for the congressman & senators, his B&G interview, NROTC application and interview, his job, AP work, and getting ready for his fall sport the only free time he will have is bed time.

I hope all that hard work will pay off for your DS, best of luck to him! Hopefully if he gets a lot done over the summer for USNA, then he won’t have to do as much during the school year as some other folks will.

That’s exactly what I told him… I let him know that if he is all done by July the only thing he will need to worry about come Sept. is his “C” plan which would be our state school, a private school he likes, one reach school, and his scholarship applications.

He has to take the ACT one more time but that’s in a few weeks. We are hoping he hit his mark with the last SAT he took in early May.

We shall see…

One more to get through the system after this…

Great News 3Units!

Yep…Candidate letters are out. I don’t know how these kids keep up with all they need to do. Ours is only going to NASS and USAFA, had to turn down SLE and AIM due to conflicts. But we know another going to 3 of the 4, heading to Europe for 3 weeks to teach and working at the local amusement park in between. He aced (34) the ACT already so that piece of the puzzle is done for him.
Most still all have ACT/SAT to do for the 2nd, 3rd or 4th time…PLUS the SAT subject matter tests for those also applying to civilian colleges, plus sports and on top of that many are headed to Boys State or working on Eagle Scout completion this summer (two BIG ones from what we hear). I don’t know how they breathe. Ours is at boarding school and has to run her own ship all year long so I am hoping she can run it with this process this summer. It is a lot to manage.
3unitsIlove…is your son set on USNA? Our kid is just in the ‘consider’ mode until after NASS and USAFAss.

taben1112,

He is very determined to get in!! We visited a lot of schools but the day we walked onto the Academy grounds it lasted no kidding 5 minutes. My DS stopped me and said, this is it I know it and it’s where I belong. As the day went on there were more and more things that just made up his mind.

We walked the entire grounds. We saw a wedding, the museum (WOW, a must see!!), the cemetery, the sports complex, the class rooms, Bancroft Hall, Hubbard Hall, Clumbarium, Glen Warner soccer, and so much more.

What I thought would last an hour lasted severl hours. My DS did not want to leave until he saw it all, I even had to stop and have lunch. We got there at 9am and did not leave until 3pm. A long day but it was all about him so I could not take it away.

At one point he found the written statement on the mission of the Academy as well as the honor concept. I don’t know what he was thinking at the moment and I really did not want to ask but he did say. “This is what it’s all about!”

Is he set, there is no doubt in my mind this is exactly what he wants. He is so set that he let me know about an hour ago that his application is almost complete. He even went to school today and asked his math teacher if she sent in her information. She did! He wont see his English teacher until Friday but I guess he emailed her and she let him know it will be done.

What started as an entertaining thought over the past three years has now turned into complete focus. That being said he also understands the odds. He knows this is a tough road that may not work out so as much as he has his heart set on it he keeps himself grounded.

Along with the Academy application he is also submitting for NROTC. He just set-up the date for his officer interview which takes place during the first week of June. That application is all set and ready to submit they just need the interview.

His “C” plan is also very much in place, he knows which schools he wants and has called and asked if their essays remain the same from year to year. The essays for the thee “C” plan schools are now complete. I had no idea he did this until today.

He said he just want to relax, enjoy his senior year, enjoy his friends, and focus on his classes. He has seen what seniors go through and he wants to avoid the crazyness.

congrats!!!

I’ll pass along the messages that you all send but the hard work comes from him. As parents we are just lucky to have him and out others.

DS told me he got his candidate letter too. He said he is going to wait until exams are over before tackling it. NASS starts up in 10 days!

glido,

Session 1 I take it. My DS is in session 3. Post exams is a great idea, it gives more time to think.

All the best, please reply in about 15 days and let us all know how it went and suggestions of guidance.

Will do - we are going to hit the road to visit a few other schools while on the East Coast, so I might not post until we get back. DS is pretty pumped.

If you have time for Villanova, Lehigh, and U of Maryland they are well worth the time.

There are 5 in my family bunch and we all loved Villanova.

What schools do you have on the list?

The kid has expressed interest in Duke, Georgetown, Penn, Fordham, Brown, Boston College, Cornell and Bowdoin. (He will apply to our state flagship as a safety) There is no way I am driving from Annapolis to Durham to Brunswick. It is just not happening. I will fly to Baltimore, pick him up at USNA on Thursday, visit Georgetown Friday. Then, he will have pick north or south.

That’s a very nice list of schools… I live very close to Brown, I know a few kids that attend. If you head that way and your looking for dinner just ask around or look up…Federal Hill!

I’m also often in Boston, My DS has BU and BC on his list, I think he likes BU a bit more. All the best on your trip, eat good food!! For me it’s all about the food, if I have that I’m one very happy person.

Glido…my oldest has visited some of the same schools you kid is interested in! Quick but IMPORTANT thing we heard about Georgetown…they want THREE SAT subject matter test. School counselor advised to take 4 or 5 because the scores need to be GOOD. Our kid has taken two and will take 2 more in December IF Gtown is still on her list.
She did not care for Brown, though most at her school who visited LOVED it. It was a little two earthy for her. Did not care for BC…it was a little too conservative for her. Penn and Duke fit the bill. Loved Duke…diversity in the best of ways (beliefs, types of kids and even income level), great campus feel and school spirit. Liked Penn too, but did not like the campus. Cornell and Bowdoin are too rural in her eyes.
If you go north, think about Tufts as you look at BC (easy train ride from one to another). If you go south, Chapel Hill (UNC) is right down the road from Duke. Enjoy and please share your feedback. Sorry to highjack here…may need to start a Plan B school choices thread for 2014 applicants!

HELP PLEASE: What time do flights need to be scheduled for regarding NASS departure day? Is 3pm too early? We can’t find the information on this important piece!
Thanks–
T

On the website it says regarding flights:

"Those flying commercial air should make arrangements to arrive at Baltimore-Washington International airport (BWI) between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Day 1 of the seminar, and **depart after 3:00 p.m. on the last day of the seminar **. Buses and midshipmen escorts will be on hand to get you to and from the Academy and BWI.

Thank you! Don’t know how we missed it. My needs to make flight arrangements asap.

I hope you were able to get the filght… After seeing your post I asked my DS if I could go through all he has just as a 2nd pair of eyes. Thank god I did that, he has 10 folders for all that he is doing. One for each US rep, one for NASS, one for his B&G, one for NROTC, one for other colleges, one for the actual application, one for the sport camp he is attending and I forgot what the last one was for.

Anyway I went through the NASS and camp folder and saw that he need a 2nd pair of running shoes for NASS and the camp requires a seperate medical form.

Thank you for your post…

3units & Taben1112: Thanks for the well wishes. DS gets on the plane in 14 hours. He’s pretty pumped - just got back from the barber.

I am thrilled that he gets a week at Navy, but I am trying to play it cool because his desire to go there has to come from within.

I will brief the thread upon our return (or along the way, if i can) re NASS, the visited colleges and, of course, the chow!
