I’m a 9th grader at a boarding school and applied to better schools this year. I got accepted to all three I applied to; Stony Brook School, The Masters School, and The Hun School of Princeton. I felt like Stony Brook didn’t fit me at all so I am stuck between Masters and Hun. Both are around the same ranking wise.
Does anyone have advice on which one to pick?
Go to the revisit and see which one feels better. Hun is more of a day school with boarders so you may want to pay special attention to the boarding community - what their weekend activities are, who they are, etc. This may matter less if you can go home on weekends.
I have heard that lots of kids at Masters go home on weekends but I don’t know the school so well.
Both are good schools. Hun is known in the area as “sporty”. The kids don’t seem too stressed.
Hun is a great school. Mostly day students, fewer % of boarders. Teachers are warm and welcoming. Don’t pick based on the rankings, but instead where you think you could excel
Thank you! I already signed up for revisit day but I just wanted opinions anyways. I appreciate the help!
Daughter applied to and was admitted to both Hun and Masters when she applied for frosh boarding slot a few years ago. She chose Masters…more than a small factor was the fencing programs/access to strong clubs at each school.
Note that while she ended up at Masters, after two years, she decided she wanted to transfer and is now a Junior at George.
Based on our research/visits for both schools a few years ago and our experience with Masters, I’d say that Hun probably offers a more traditional/preppy vibe and Masters offers a more metropolitan/diverse vibe. Also, perhaps it’s because I always think of Myron Rolle (Hun/Florida State/Rhodes Scholar/NFL/FSU Med School/Harvard-Mass Gen), but I think of Hun as a fairly sporty school. Whereas I think of Masters as more artsy (though the new sports building is amazing).
I think you can’t go wrong at either…but they are definitely different. Neither has that large of a boarding program, percentage-wise.
@SevenDad Thank you!!! Is there any particular reason your daughter did not enjoy Masters if you don’t mind me asking?
I’ll send you more details via PM.
@SevenDad thank you
