Amused-----OF COURSE NOT!...but people are entitled to share their view or their own meanings.....this is the best thread

There must be the "Best" meaning of life....
I don't think it's possible that each person's meaning of life is equally valid.
Cuz' look at the world...everyone has their own meaning, and not everyone lives equally happy lives. The ones who live the happier life, must have the better theory.

So, what we're trying to find is the "better theory".

okytdy; define "better". exactly, you cant because of all the loopholes

amused has the most logically sound answer/explanation.

look at my previous post.

It defines "better" as the theory that people who die happy have.

In other words, the "better" theory are those that make you die happy/content with life.

amused has the most logically sound answer/explanation. DEFINATELY NOT
Why can't there be a universal "meaning of life"---think about it
perhaps, there is but we dont yet have the technology in science to figure it out i mean, theres so many mysteries in life and nature etc that many people believe technology hasnt even scratched the surface of the world

I definitely agree.

Amused basically contradicts every historical philosopher alive.

What would be the point of the millions of philosophers that previously existed if you're going to say there's no answer to the meaning of life???

There must be "THE" meaning. And I personally think it's something that makes you die happy. And in order to die happy you must change yourself (like Lock said), and by the law of cause and effect, the world/universe will change too.

I think that the meaning of life is to realize that the Universe is unfathomably vast and to begin exploring it on successively higher levels; just exploring as many possibilities as you can. You start with basic mundane as a child up till about twelve, then you start the pondering and then from the teen years through the time you reach the later mature years, you ponder about everything in a philosophical manner trying to find purpose for yourself or trying to attend to a problem that you think needs addressing. If you are not narrowed by society then you will live on a high philosophical plane; if you are narrowed by society, then you will become a boring person who has "tunnel thought". This has been my perspective...

wow, you're very philosophical.

One thing that's to be said to all those people who like philosophy: Do not read philosophy on an existential premise. Read it with the premise that "life is beautiful" and "i want to be happy" and "i'm gonna be happy by studying philosophy", or else it would be pointless to search something that is beyond complete comprehension.

"Do not read philosophy on an existential premise."

What's wrong with an existential premise? :) The goal of the existentialist is to live a good life in an absurd and essentially meaningless universe. And, by the way,
"Amused basically contradicts every historical philosopher alive. "

That doesn't include existentialists, does it?

omokunrin---you talk about being narrowed by society....what you said is true but i can kinda expand on that----i like to think of the world as being divided into two types of people...those who care about their self-interests and live every day striving to better themselves and live a better life which isnt necessarily bad.....then theres the second group of people who see the "bigger picture" and realize that there's more to life than self improvement (kinda like an environmentalist who cares not only for themselves but for the environment and the welfare of futute generations)

"If the meaning of life is to keep on searching until you die...there would be no purpose. A meaning must have purpose just as a purpose must have meaning."

okytdy, you are one of the dumbest people on this board. Why you are asking this question in the first place? To bitch at me how my answer is wrong and how 42 is right? Please get a life.

I'm sorry if i offended you.
But my purpose is just to see everyone's ideas.

nomir_diva you're absolutely correct. I guess i wasn't in a good mood when i typed that...it seems like i was somewhat irritated.

But anyways. We're just trying to look at the diverse ideas here. I'll personally choose the "Best" idea....and you guys can do the same.

My opinion is that, so far, Lock has the best ideas.

Hmm...the purpose of life is to promote the species...

forty-three, according to the original radio version, which came out before the book. forty-two is a human error. Really!

What do you mean by "promote" whirligigs?

Does any specific philosopher answer this question?

what is the meaning of life? IT should be phrased what is the reason for our existence?

And the answer to that would be to ensure the survival of our race.

okytdy, I meant "promote" as in to promote the survival of...like what hnbui's saying.

hnbui....but why would we ensure the survival of our race......because theres a reason to! So.....theres a meaning to life..if theres no meaning to life there would be little motivation to ensure the survival of our race. Thats what i think

"hnbui....but why would we ensure the survival of our race......because theres a reason to! So.....theres a meaning to life..if theres no meaning to life there would be little motivation to ensure the survival of our race. Thats what i think"

I disagree with this argument. All life forms "want" to reproduce. It's a part of evolution. People, just like all other living things, have strong instinctual motivations to do certain things. People want to have sex. They want the emotional satisfaction of raising a family. There doesn't have to be a mystical "meaning of life" to motivate them to do that.
