The MOB/MOG Dress Extravaganza!

One of my favorite petite bloggers Jean Wang posted this dress. I wish the picture was better on the website but she looked fab in this. Of course she’s a tiny beautiful woman

I hope it’s ok to post a picture from Jean’s instagram.

If it looks good on THEM! I will compliment something on someone else that I couldn’t possibly wear myself whether because of the cut, style, trend, or color.

What I tend to notice most are color and cut & proportion to body type. Everyone can look outstanding in something. No one can look outstanding in everything. No one. Most people have an awareness of what colors flatter them. Many have no awareness of cut & proportion for their body types, however. That was one of the best things about the show, “What Not to Wear.” They focused on cut and and proportion for a person’s body type.

As an example, my friend once sent me a photo of Melania Trump (okay, this is NOT political!) in
an outfit and wrote, “I feel like I should like this, but I don’t. Why doesn’t she look good in this?” And, it was because the proportion was off because it was too short-waisted on her.

Height, weight, leg length, torso length, neck length, width of shoulders, width of hips, size of waist - all those things matter in finding a cut that looks good on someone. It’s easy to see when something is, “off.” It’s harder to know why.

Your dress looks great on you, glad someone noticed.
I hope you find a MOB dress that you like as much.

This is for no one in particular. Just to say across my screen came ads for some beautiful floral dresses at JC Penney! Who woulda thunk it? They also have some beautiful solids. And they have petites and plus sizes, too. Surprising to me!

I saw this headline today and immediately thought of this thread " Nikki Haley faces backlash for wearing off-white dress to daughter’s wedding" I am in agreement here - too white for mother of the bride

I’m not picky about the “rules” but I have to agree! Looks like two brides!

At my son’s May wedding last year, a friend of the bride’s parents (probably in her 60’s), wore an even lighter dress . Off white (barely) long, sleeveless slinky slip type dress. It was a garden wedding, not a glamorous event!

You all know I now have to repost a picture from my wedding of me and my mom in the ONLY POSSIBLE DRESS she could find in all of the lower peninsula of Michigan- as pleadingly told to me from a phone booth outside a mall - in the pouring rain - in tears. I said fine.

It was requested to be blue - from several options of hues.

Maybe the color looked darker in the store?

This link does not mention for Mothers to avoid white (rather obvious, and often mentioned elsewhere). But it does include bullets about MOB picking first / different colors. Not that I usually pay much attention myself to Emily Post, but for a wedding I wanted to follow that tradition (it’s what my MIL had preferred long ago).

Anyway, I think we ALL can agree that a white dress on MOB (or MOG or even a wedding guest) seems wrong.

I think both dresses look great. When has a MOB ever been confused with the bride? @Marilyn, I think your mom’s embroidered dress was classy, and I love your puffy sleeves, pearls, and long gloves. I see complementary, not a faux pas.

My MOH wore the floor-length dress my mom wore for her second wedding, same off-white color as mine but much less fancy. I think we looked great together.

I hate all these rules.

Oh, Mom’s dress didn’t bother me at the time and still doesn’t. But I really laughed when after she was gone, I found the suit she was married in that we always assumed was white - based on the black and white photos. Turns out it was a lovely ice green silk. So now I say she always wanted to wear white to a wedding so picked mine.

Then she took it on cruises for formal night.

@ChoatieMom, thx re my dress! The puffy sleeves were there to cover my shoulders in the synagogue then got pulled down for the reception.

My best friend’s mom wore ivory to the weddings of her 3 daughters ….at the request of the brides, her daughters. They wanted the bride and MOB in a similar color for the photos.

I think NH looks fantastic and not bridal at all (she could be mistaken for her daughter’s sister!)

I know an MOB who wore a very pale pink dress that came off more white than pink in the pics.

That’s something I had not thought about.

Thinking more about it, my aunt had an ivory suit for cousin’s wedding… and that looked ok.

And looking at Marilyn photo above, her mother has a white MOB outfit that seems age appropriate… not trying to compete with the white wedding gown. And the corsage made it even prettier.

Unless the bride specifically requested it, I would never wear any color that could be mistaken for white. I would NOT be mistaken for any young bride, but I just prefer to let the bride be the one person in white (or whatever shade s/he prefers)

With sequin dress, cashmere wrap or cashmere silk or silk?

I love your wedding gown!

I got it as a sample for $475 plus tax; had the train taken off and presumably a bit of other adjustments. I guess the salon must have given me the paper ad. I see Kleinfeld of Brooklyn carried the designer!
