My go-to “keep warm in a dressy outfit” is a little black, fitted 3/4 sleeve cardigan from Express. I have 2 and wear them all the time. Because it’s fitted it doesn’t obstruct the line of the dress/outfit.
They don’t sell anymore in stores but are on Poshmark
S2’s civil registry is next Tues. Have a dress in burgundy, blue and yellow, and I brought my denim jacket. S and Fiancee aren’t getting super dressed up (saving that for the celebration on Thurs.).
I actually wore this exact combo to a casual wedding celebration in rural CA a few years ago and felt hip. (That is never the case with me) I did bring a blue unstructured jacket if I chicken out. Will know more once we see them.
Brought a deep berry pashmina for the dress I’m wearing Thurs. It will tone down the white in the dress (it’s mostly pink/deep berry dense paisley on a white background).
I agree - traditional motos can overpower. I prefer a pared down moto (moto-inspired, if you will ) without all the metal, belt and shoulder adornment. I love the Marrakech brand and have several (I get lucky on Poshmark). Also, Blank NYC has faux leather or suede motos.
conmama - I love, love the first blazer you posted just above (the fitted black one)! I’m always on the look-out for non-boxy jackets w/(at least slightly) nipped in waist…
I have to say that it’s going to be hard to find a formal MOG dress. I like a bit of bling. But so many of the styles I’m seeing are on models who have no stomachs and are 30 years old. I can’t wear a form fitting dress anymore. There are SO many of them. Where are the designers to help us moms diminish what we’d like to hide. I don’t want to show my arms, but don’t want long sleeve. I hate my back side. It’s going to be a struggle.
I have a year, and I honestly think I’m going to need it. My color options are limited. Probably pink or blue or Multi. MOB is leaning towards Navy. Bridesmaid in light blue. Ugh.
I had all the same issues. I ordered and returned over 40 dresses during my daughter’s 18 month engagement. I finally settled one from Sachin and Babi (still had it altered to shorten the sleeves). They are not inexpensive dresses but well made and comfortable. I finally bought mine once it went on clearance so it was much less at that point even factoring in the additional tailoring I wanted/needed.
I think you won’t have trouble. There are so many places to buy them online and most have great sorting tools and don’t seem to mind sending them and then having returns, mostly free returns. I have been pleasantly surprised at the options, bling, no bling, all sleeve lengths, all dress lengths, figure forgiving and not, lots of colors- bought 3 MOG/MOB dresses (for 3 weddings) in the past few years and found it was more of a case of which one instead of not one.
My SIL also did about 40 dresses. I’m going to Chicago in a couple months and think I’ll shop there first. Then if nothing, I’ll start ordering. Oh dear.
I actually have a wonderful seamstress. So many dresses I like are sleeveless. I’m going to see if she can somehow turn them into an off the shoulder neck.
This is the dress that I’m wearing to my son’s wedding in Chicago in two weeks. Even though I ordered many dresses online, this was one of the first I ordered and I ended up liking it the best. I’m petite, 5’ 2", not thin, so didn’t want something form-fitting. I also struggled with finding shoes since I have narrow feet and can’t wear anything too high-heeled. I wouldn’t necessarily have chosen silver but these were the most comfortable and I think they look good with the navy. I also found a silver clutch that matches, more or less, and I have a silvery shawl/wrap in case of cooler weather. This dress is made by Alex Evenings and I ordered it from Amazon. I thought they had a lot of choices and I really liked the Prime Try Before You Buy program so I didn’t have to spend anything up front.
@conmama , I did try some in person shopping for son’s wedding last year but ended up ordering about 8 dresses online, from Dillard’s, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Saks. Most from Dillard’s so I could return in person to my local store(and look around some more) rather than have to mail back.
I liked ordering online but did find that some just weren’t going to work when they arrived and I saw them in person. A couple I did not even bother to try on. Try not to get too discouraged. You may go through many choices before you find the right one but you may know it when you try it on and it just feels right! Have fun shopping!
It sure is handy to be able to do mail order. But it also can be tedious with size variations across brands… and across styles within a brand. (This is especially irksome if you are not standard proportions - on my “small pear” body, the best-fit dresses varied from size 2 to 12).
I thought about this helpful group this morn, when I decided to wear my MOG (garden semi-formal, chunky heel needed) shoes to church. They were a little dressy for the outfit, but happy memories
Good seamstresses absolutely can do magic! I had a fabulous A&O dress that was a disaster on the top (think boobs falling out). The seamstress suggested making it to look like a halter neck with an open back… it now fits like a glove.
