the most annoying stereotypes ppl give you about your major

I'm a double major - International Relations and Economics. It's interesting to see how people's reactions differ depending on which one I say first. They seem more impressed if I put economics at the top of the list.

My favorite response ever: (I was doing some reading for a Poli class on an airplane, and the guy next to me starts talking):
Him: "What are you reading?"
Me: "Politicial theory"
Him: "Oh, so you want to be a politician?"
Right.

Another good one:
"I'm impressed there are Arts students who can do math"
... like taking a BA means you have to be unable to work with numbers?

I'm doing econ and math.

When I say econ first: "Why not Wharton?"...wharton is NOT econ people, get that through your head. I if I had been interested in accounting, marketing etc I would have done wharton...I'm not.

When I say math first: "So you want to teach?", a funny one I've gotten a couple of times is "Do you tutor?"...I don;t want to teach. But I might tutor, depends on the $$ lol

"What do you want to major in?"

"Idk."

"Really?!?"

"...yeah...it's called 'undeclared'.."

*looks at me like i'm destined for failure

After a few months of that, I switched to:

"What do you want to major in?"

"Maybe psychology. I'm interested, but not really certain..."

"So you want to be a psychologist?"

"Nooo....I'm not really..."

silence

When I tell people I am a nursing major, they ask me why I didn't just go to community college (I am at NYU). I think that response says it ALL.

That people in engineering are geeks with no social skills. The people in science are a lot worse in that department, from what I've seen (I've been in both faculties).

Linguistics:

"So, you must speak a lot of languages, right?"

...yeah, not so much.

Some people have this misconception that linguistics is just about learning a lot of languages.

Hooray ignorance.

When I tell people that I am going to electrical engineering, they assume that I'm smarter than they are.

And they're right.

;)

Sociology:

"A p*ssy humanities major."

Philosophy:

"What? That's not at all practical."

math majors are disorganized, brilliant, and can't function in real life.
but i'm alright with that stereotype 'cause it describes me perfectly. ;)

Are you serious wutangfinancial?

History

"Are you going to teach?"

If I was going to teach I would have said History Education.

fizix2, another math major here who totally agrees (except that I am not so arrogant to call myself brilliant :))

"I'm a business major."

Most annoying response:
"Oh I hate business majors, they just take the easy route, major in some BS, and get a 80k job on graduation. You guys suck, what cop outs."

Second most annoying in similar vein:
"Oh, so you're going to be a blood sucking ass." (Uh... okay?)

Yeah, the "you're an English major so you must be aspiring to teach" stereotype is something I get all the time, too.

Everyone in my family is in science or academics (yeah they're all nerds).

So when i initially took Economics and Business in high school- everybody in my family assumed i will do nothing in life. Lot of serious talks hapenned and stuff :)

My favourite came from my old grandmother- " Doesn't matter- the girl looks fine- lets start searching eligible guys for her marriage "

From school mates i usually get-'why do you want to study Eco? Why not business?'
me "I don't want to go into business"
they "are you not smart enough for it?"
me "yeah- thats correct"

^ It comes with being Indian

Haha so true

Also, people assume I'm a soulless prick when they hear I'm a finance major.

@blue: I believe he is as serious as WuTang Financial's reputation; that is, "a place for you and your kids...[where you gotta] git' it, grab it, bonk." LOL, I'm afraid this may be lost on most people...

Which stereotypes stir up my contempt?

None. They're stereotypes.

People assume I'm retarded because I'm a Communication major.

They're probably right. I just tell everyone I'm going to coast by on my good looks and charm ::shrug::
