My DD keeps getting emails and letters from this society. She recently received one from the UMD chapter. Is this one of those scam honor societies or is it worth joining.
Do a little Googling & I think you’ll hang on to your money
My D is a rising senior at UMD and we’ve never heard of it
bigdadreed that’s what I was thinking too. I guess if you plan on going to the meetings and doing the volunteer work it might be worth the $95. My dd has gotten a few of these honor society things but they all just seem like scams promoting scholarships etc…
Fwiw, in the university-wide commencement program, the only national honor societies listed are:
Golden key
Mortar board
Omicron delta kappa
Phi beta kappa
Phi kappa phi
My d is a member if the Mortar Board and Alpha Lambda Delta. So Alpha Lambda is fake news??
I didn’t intend to imply that other honor societies were fake news, merely that there was a limited number mentioned in the commencement program. If you are looking for pros and cons of which society to join (since you will likely get many invites), this information could be a helpful way to assess what you choose to join.
Alpha Lamda Delta is part of Primannum, and while not listed in the commencement program, the students that are active participants had Primannum honor cords to distinguish them at graduation. My son joined it because I told him it would be good have something at the college level to put on his resume when looking for internships, and it would insure some honor recognition at commencement (but he didn’t do the events along the way to get enough points for graduation cords, haha).
Tau Beta Pi is the engineering equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa, yet it was not included in the commencement program. However, those students wore a special honors stole over their graduation gown.
Fwiw, all of the honor societies that are specific to a major were not included in the main, university-wide commencement program, but each of those students had their own distinction (cord, stole, etc) to wear at graduation.
Some programs had medals they awarded for their program, and some frats/sororities gave their own stoles, so with all the cords, stoles and medals, and the bright red University of Maryland Pride stole that ALL students got to wear, it was a very colorful and festive graduation!
Hope that helps to clarify.
Thanks Maryversity
