D received invite to UMD Primannum Honor Society. Is it worth joining?

I personally think so…yes, a lot of those honor society invites you get in the mail are not worth joining, but I did some digging last year and found this one to be somewhat worthwhile. There is an active chapter on campus and they held a really nice induction ceremony in the chapel that we attended in the spring. Gave me a nice excuse to visit and take him out to dinner, ha ha. I can guarantee I (as a proud parent) enjoyed it more than he did, but it was still nice.

It’s a one-time membership fee, and while your gpa does tell the same story, what you get is the ability to add another “honor” on your resume at a very early stage in your college career. There is an active chapter on campus that requires you to attend events to earn “points” - easy, silly things to do, not a big deal at all (resume workshop, study session, charity event, etc). If you get the number of required points and you keep up your gpa, you get to wear honor cords at graduation.

If you don’t attend enough activities (average of 3 points per semester I believe - some events are worth 2 or 3 points) and/or you don’t maintain your gpa at least at 3.5, you don’t get to wear the honor cords BUT you still get to keep membership in the society since it is a lifetime membership, so it still goes on your resume.

They do have an open page on facebook if you want to check them out.

Thanks very much maryv!!
