I, a freshman, received a letter of offer of membership from the Cornell Chapter of National Society of Collegiate Scholar. Acceptance of the membership requires $75.

Is this a legitimate organization that will prove to be a useful addition to a resume/CV?

Will this help me get into medical school/cute guys?

well mariambaby, I got the same letter, and yes it will help you get cute guys because I just got really interested in you once I found out you got it…

I just received the letter as well. Thanks for the info, leahmichele! Anyone else have any input? $75 seems like a lot for a membership, but then again it’s only a one-time fee…

Btw, from the link above, it looks like there are going to be two info sessions for prospective members…May 3rd, Upson Lounge, 5:30pm or May 4th, RPCC Multipurpose Room, 6:00pm.

I got it but I don’t think im gonna do it, doesn’t seem like it will do anything.

I do think it depends on how involved you are. It seems like the college version of Arista (National Honor Society)…I think it did boost my resume because I held a board position in my high school, but I’m not sure it did all that much for regular members.

Notice that leahmichele has 3 posts, and all are posts boasting that particular “society”.
Me and all my friends got that same letter last year and none of us joined. I even got it again yesterday and I immediately chucked it out. Do you really think it’ll boost your resume if thousands of other kids get it? I think not IMO…

A friend of mine got it applied for a few scholarships and got a $500 one.

Also took a Kaplan course of the LSAT, in which the discount covered the $75 by itself.

That being said if you’re just going to join and not do anything it’s a huge waste of money, the name itself gives you no advantage in anything.
