The Natl society of HS scholars- BS or not?

I got a postcard from the National Society of High School Scholars last week. It says I hae been nominated for their society and will get more info soon. I have never heard of it and suspect they will charge a fee to get in to a meaningless society. However, it is signed by the Chair, Claus Nobel, identified as "a senior member of the family that established the Nobel prizes".

Anyone ever heard of this?

I think I got that same postcard. Probably a scam.

More BS from companies like the one who promote National Student Leadership Conferences and Who's Who.
It will fill a line on your resume but colleges know that these things are "pay for play". Save your money.

The listing is free. It's the book that you pay for. Just a clever marketing scheme to induce students and their families to buy a directory no one would otherwise be interested in but for the listing of one's son, daughter, neice etc. And, the funny thing is that it is directed to seniors and the dopey book doesn't come out until after all college acceptances have been issued so it doesn't do a thing for the college admissions process (even assuming any college really cared about it).

I initially read the thread title as "The Natl society of BS Scholars." :D

Yeah I got that this year and I remember getting it last year. No offense, but I don't think it means anything.

yea i got that too....looks a lil shaddy

Haha I laughed when I got mine the other day (I'm a senior).

Does anyone know how they get our names to begin with?

yeah i got one. ive heard its pointless.

its garbage

Yeah, I got one too. Doesn't look too promising. ;)

I've gotten one of those things for the past two years, so I decided to take it up with my guidance counselor and college placement counselor at the end of last year. He said that its just a scam and has absolutely no weight on an application because schools know that its simply "give us cash and we'll put your name in a book."

I got the invitation last year, paid the 40 bucks for it, and became a member. This year, I got the invitation again! If it cannot keep a consistent list of members, then it's definitely a scam.

Yep. My advice: Don't put it on a college app. It probably hurt me more than helped.
