I liked the first couple of seasons, but the last 2 seasons, with the exception of the finale, were just awful.
That’s fair. I don’t think I even watched the last season TBH.
A newer network show we have enjoyed is Brooklyn 99. Comedy set in a police precinct. 8 seasons (2013-21; Fox and then NBC.) Our D introduced us to it while she was living with us during the pandemic. Older S watches it as well.
I’ve been rewatching (I did it originally by netflix too) NCIS. Way too many to do marathon binge watching, but if I do 5-8 per week I can keep track of what’s happening.
I find the technology amusing. Pagers, flip phones, still using pay phones occasionally. When they type on a keyboard, it is like they are playing chopsticks on a piano with two fingers. Oh how things have changed in 20 years.
Having an over-the-air antenna is all you need to see the old classics. I watch MTM, Dick Van Dyke, Carol Burnet, Bob Newhart, Taxi and Cheers, as well as many others, on Decades. They also have a weekend binge, where they air one series the whole weekend. This past weekend was WKRP in Cincinnati so I caught a couple of episodes of that. Rewind has all 80’s and 90’s sitcoms, which is where I watch Murphy Brown. It’s not available to stream anywhere (because of music licensing?), so I was so happy to find it on Rewind. Love that show!
If we’re firing up the Way Back Machine I’ve got to put in a vote for Barney Miller. Every episode is a tightly written little play and it features an amazingingly diverse cast for the era (mid-70s.) Every character is fully drawn. Except for the technology (desk phones and typewriters) it hardly seems dated.
I enjoyed 24 for a few seasons, but the it also jumped the shark somewhere along the line. I’d like to revisit the series in the future.
Are you sure “Designated Survivor” didn’t help feed the shark?
Not sure I understand your question.
24’s final season was in 2014, if you count “Live Another Day.” Designated Survivor premiered in 2016. For me, 24 jumped the shark in the mid-2000’s, well before Designated Survivor premiered.
I actually never really liked Designated Survivor, because Sutherland’s character seemed very weak to me, at least in the beginning of the series.
I won’t repeat any that have been mentioned, so I’ll add:
The Middle - really really underrated!
Brooklyn 99
Derry Girls
Maybe that’s where I got lost. I thought Sutherland was supposedly playing the same character he did in 24.
In 24, Sutherland was a government counter terrorist agent. In Designated Survivor, he was the Secretary of HUD, who became President. I don’t believe there was any connection between the two series, but I’m not a TV expert. Could be, I don’t know.
I watched 24 for several seasons, but after an episode or two of Designated Survivor, I quickly moved on.
Kiefer Sutherland was definitely playing different characters in 24 and Designated Survivor.
One old series that popped into my head was Remington Steele. It was a fun show. I don’t think it’s free to stream, but our library system has the DVD’s so that would be a way to watch.
Another old and unusual show is The Prisoner. Once when I was being released from the hospital after surgery on a broken ankle, one staff member yelled out, #4 (my room) is leaving. I called back, I am not a number, I am a free woman. They didn’t get it.
Worst career move since Pernell Roberts was cast as the post-MASH “Trapper John”.
The Americans
Grantchester
Line of Duty
Shetland
The Good Wife
The Crown
@Joblue Where are you watching the Americans? I missed most of it the first time around and so would definitely like to watch it.
ER is on a cable station here and I rewatched it during the Pandemic. Very enjoyable, especially the early shows with the original cast and the middle to late shows. Last 2 seasons not so much.
Also FNL is great for a re-watch. Not sure I could do Lost again, although I loved it.
Thanks for these suggestions. Looking forward to some summer TV viewing.
Amazon Prime. Really, REALLY good.
Yes, I’m watching on Amazon Prime and getting even more out of it the second time around. This show is criminally underrated, IMO.
