The New School - Specific Questions
questions for The New School of Drama specifically they may not apply to other colleges within The New School.
Do your stats define if you can get into a performing arts program at one of these schools / your school? If my grades are average, but my artistic abilities show strong potential would they still consider me
Are students still eligible to perform in musicals / take Musical Theater classes at The New School if they are not a BFA Musical Theater major? ( This is because the BFA in Musical Theater is only achievable by transfer from AMDA. – Not exactly something I want to do. No offense if you’re an AMDA student…)
I really want to be able to grow as a vocalist if I were to attend this college. Is it possible to take any voice performance classes if I were to become a Dramatic Arts BFA?
Can you double major in BM Voice Performance and BFA Dramatic Arts?
What is the acceptance rate for the school of drama? I’ve read that the general University admittance rate is 60.1% but what is it for the School of Drama specifically?
Thank you so much for reading!
Many, not “May” – Sorry for the typo.
@CoffeeMo Try sending your questions to: performingarts@newschool.edu.
I am not sure that TNS currently does many musicals, they plan on adding MT in a few years. Right now private vocal lessons are available at an extra cost to Drama students. You may be able to take vocal classes at Mannes which is part of the College of Performing Arts.
Having just gone through this process (as the parent) I would not let your grades stop you from applying to most schools (there are exceptions that seem to have academic requirements Michigan, UCLA, Penn, BU, NYU to name a few). For acceptance into acting programs the audition seems to matter the most. Good academics help with merit scholarships.
Hey, @2artskidz I have emailed the college of performing arts twice or so in the last few months and have never received an answer to my questions.
This is some really cool information you’ve given me, though!! If TNS truly does add MT to their 4-year program without transfer, that would seal my assurance into wanting to attend TNS.
@CoffeeMo My D was accepted this past round and so were several of her friends - IMO it is not that hard to get in compared to other BFA programs but you still have to do your best as you never know. Audition plays the most role but academics will help in getting more money (it’s a very expensive school). But look carefully at their curriculum - it is not a traditional BFA program, it has elements of acting, directing, playwriting - so more of a broader dramatic arts program and not a conservatory.
