The no-news-is-good-news NMF rejection/acceptance/worry thread, Class of 2018

Ugh! My son is home sick today so unless the school emails me, another day of waiting in SE Nebraska. In our case, I’m beginning to get really concerned. Very concerned that the school has gotten the stuff but my son didn’t make it and they just haven’t told him. Sweating the C+ still…

@okeydokeypokey Your school probably has it. We are in N Florida and son was notified yesterday.

@Susan1323 if your DS didn’t make the NMF cut, he would have gotten a letter in the mail sometime mid-January. Now, this is not to say that mail cannot get lost. Believe me, I live this reality almost every day, as our mail delivery is highly unreliable. But I can totally relate to your concern. If you haven’t contacted your DS’s guidance counselor yet, you might want to call mid-day to check in about this since your DS is sick. I asked my DS to go to the counselor’s office today to check. He has an important scholarship app due tomorrow and NMF should be on there if he has, in fact, earned that designation.

@GoAskDad I emailed with the Principal and GC on Friday so they know I am anxiously waiting. As of Friday pm, they had not received anything and said they would be on the lookout and let me know. I am concerned that we didn’t get the letter in January because it was lost. I’m a worrier so its what I do! I’m a just need to know either way kind of person. It means big money for our son so I’m extra nervous.

I checked with the principal’s office at our school this morning. When I followed up to ask when they would get their certificates and she said they would be recognized and get their certificates at the Senior Awards Ceremony (which is in late May!). Had been waiting for the certificate itself to use to update colleges / scholarship apps. Getting it in May won’t help much with that?

@LibbyOK The letter mailed directly to students this week should suffice for notifying colleges.

@LibbyOK Won’t you get something in your home mail too? And couldn’t they give it to you and then you could give it back for the Award Ceremony?

@LibbyOK, that’s our school’s policy too, and they don’t inform students when they receive notification about finalist standing. I’m fine waiting for my daughter’s letter at home (despite that C I mentioned in an earlier post!) The rejection letter would have arrived quite a while ago.

Notified today in NJ

@LibbyOK - that’s true for my kids’ school. Certificate is distributed at the senior awards ceremony and is a really big deal - yours will probably be the same so relish that when it happens. You’ll get an NMF letter from NMSC directly this month, in plenty of time to notify colleges and get on a sponsor’s list by March first, if that’s your goal.

I still think it’s rude that the high school is notified before the student, given that apparently many schools keep the certificates for later presentation. Oh well, if I ran the world, this wouldn’t be the first thing I would change.

My D went in and asked for hers so she could make copies and submit to a few colleges

Just got email for DS18 his GC gave him the letter! He said he was told to make sure and copy the letter before filing it because the school doesn’t keep copies of it. Darn straight! that letter is getting copied and then put in the safe - it’s worth $100,000.00 to us!

You all will like this. I’m sure my son’s school will also keep the certificates to give out on the awards day. The best part is that my son (if he makes it) and most of the other Finalists won’t be there to receive them. They will be taking an AP Exam and won’t get to attend their own awards day. This includes the valedictorian. School won’t reschedule the ceremony. Apparently it has always been done this way and the top kids just have miss it.

@Emory85 that has to be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard!!! Aren’t the top kids getting most ofthe awards?

Thank you!

@3scoutsmom Pretty much. I don’t know why I didn’t know about this until this year. I thought it couldn’t possibly be true and surely it would be rescheduled. Nope. I wouldn’t have had him take that particular class if I’d known this. It’s AP Econ. Son is disappointed as he was a slow starter in high school and hasn’t gotten a ton of awards.

Our high school doesn’t even have an awards ceremony - probably due to its size (1100 seniors). My student was just notified there will be pictures tomorrow, but no mention of what the pictures are for! I assume it’s for NMF, but a little more notice would have been nice since it will be the only “celebration.” Wouldn’t you know it - we have a college visit scheduled for tomorrow :((

Yeah, I just found out that we’ll be at S’s freshman orientation during his school’s scholarship night and his senior awards ceremony.

Nothing here again. This is getting a little ridiculous. [-(
