The Offical Desicion Thread!

Typist: did you have a lot of leadership positions? And what were they?

How many international students have recieved theirs so far, and where are you located? I'm in Toronto, Canada, and I haven't gotten anything in the mail yet.

arghhhh! its thursday! still no decision!

jesseeinstein-

Are you going to get brave and check online if something doesn't come by tomorrow?

nope. waiting for the letter. There are actually a few reasons:
1) If I do get in, I really want to find out with a big envelope!
2) If I don't get in, I don't want to find out online, I'd rather see the small envelope, and take the hit in 2 small blows
3) If I don't get in, I don't want to find out now and then have to get the letter that says I'm not in as well. Two rejections hurts twice as much.

4) I'm superstitious lately... I know it's ridiculous, but I don't want to curse it.

In conclusion, I'm considering a test of stamina. It sucks, but I think it's better that I wait. Hopefully I'll get it tomorrow, and I figure that it'll definately be here after the easter weekend. Tuesday at the latest I guess.
Does anyone know if they send them airmail?

jesseeinstein-

I tend to be superstitious too. I'm always afraid I'll jinx it somehow. I agree with you on your reasoning.

I don't think they send letters airmail. Just snail mail.

jesseeinstein : you had the option of requesting your package to come by international priority fedex express ..... I think they charge you for that.... But I guess its too late now.....

Anyone's decision up yet on the site???

nope..................

can anybody confirm whether first batch of letters was sent on 21st or 23rd?

Here's what I know and there are various contradictions with this and so it is a bit confusing so hard to know what the story will be....

A couple weeks ago, speaking with the admissions office, I was told that the letters would be mailed out on Monday, March 21 and then the decisions would be online three days later (March 24).

Then, this past Monday, March 21, a parent on the musical theater forum on CC mentioned that his son's decision was online that morning. We had never checked online because we were going by what the admissions office had said. But I checked on my D's page on Monday at her request (she was in the hospital actually) and nothing was on her page. So, she wanted me to call to find out why nothing was online as we assumed at that point that others had theirs online (from that one post, though now I see that many of you also do not have a decision online either). The admissions person said that they were mailed out on Monday but they did not mail them ALL out on Monday cause there were "so many" and so they can't all go out at once (though I don't quite get that because when my other D applied to college last year, her colleges told everyone at once).

Also, this person at the admissions office was quite surprised when I told her that what precipitated my call was that another parent I know said his son's decision was online on Monday and she could not imagine that being so. I told her I had met this person (which we did at auditions) and I'm sure this is accurate. She looked it up and saw that his letter went out on Friday, March 18 and she said she did not know any letters had gone out (which explains why his decision was online on Mon., March 21). So, as you can see, even SHE did not know some were mailed sooner. So, the answer at admissions varies depending who you talk to, it seems. She looked up my child and said that NO letter had been mailed out to her (this was as of Monday). No snail mail letter has come to our house and her decision is still not online as of this morning and who knows when she will hear. Until now, I was going by the Mon. March 21 mailing and Thurs. March 24 online dates but apparently that is not what is happening across the board and not in my kid's case. I have no idea when to expect it. I share this as another "case" here plus to say what an admissions secretary related to me. So, the upshot is that not all letters were mailed Monday....and some must have gone out sooner and some not yet! She did say that this was not unusual for someone in performing arts because they had to make it through the audition process and then the next step is the admissions process and so sometimes those come out later. That's all I know. So, while the wait has been long and while we were going by a certain date all along, it is trickier waiting now because we have no idea the date it will come.

Susan
PS, by the way, my D is home from the hospital and can at least open letters and view the internet now when it eventually happens. She got one college decision while in the hospital but had to have her dad open it at home and tell her by phone. Thankfully, it was a happy one.

Thanx a ton soozievt for sharing this info.

Soozie...Glad you daughter is home and improving, and hopefully we will all get good admission news soon.

soozie....hope your D is doing much better now.....I sometimes think the people in the CMU admissions office do not speak to each other! This whole business about when letters are mailed and go online, with people getting so many different answers just confirms it.

We had similar experience earlier.....D noticed that her 'where am I...' page showed various pieces of mail as being sent to her - one in early Jan - one about 2 weeks later....time went on...those mailed pieces never arrived....called admissions and was told that the date posted on the site was 'the date the mail left our office, but then it will sit in the CMU mail room (apparently for a good, long time!) and we have no control over when it actually leaves the campus.' OK - we forgot about it...then when D was at her portfolio review, I stopped in admissions office on a hunch and asked about the pieces....was told by 2 women working the front desk that the date posted 'was the date the address labels were pulled' (although I can't figure for the life of me why they would think applicants CARED when they pulled the labels at all - that it was necessary info to post for all applicants!)

Oh, well - I should note that these were typical college fluff propaganda pieces sent bulk mail to all interested students - NOT important info sent first class. But I have extensive experience in direct mail industry, we live about 2 hours from CMU and normal mail is 2 days to Pgh....I know those bulk mail pieces wouldn't take 2 weeks+ to reach us - lots of times USPS will deliver them with first class mail, if it more convenient for them. To date.....we have yet to see either mailed piece.

My long, rambling point is that mailing in general seems to be a problem for this office. It's really not that big a deal....you would think nearly all admit decisions were made by early last week....this is a mailing of maybe 2500-3000 pieces MAX (quite small by USPS standards) - pull the staff together (probably 10 or so in the dept.??), throw some pizza and drinks out on a table, and get to work....they could have it done in two days at most. Get them all in the mail on the same day and be done. If nothing else, it would greatly cut down on all the frantic phone calls they are now answering!

To clarify and correct an assortment of misconceptions:

Based on the knowledge I have obtained, some letters were sent out on Monday, March 21st. To avoid sending a massive amount of letters out simultaneuosly, only some were sent; the process by which these few were selected appears random. Decisions available online will be made available 3 days after the specific letter has been sent. Therefore, it is fair to assert the letters sent Monday will be received today, and decisions will also be made available online. (Though there are exceptions) More letters have been sent the past few days, and the online decisions will be posted three days after respective departures.
Letters will continue to be sent this week, and hopefully all will be received by next week: the following week at the latest.
Even though many people are anxiously awaiting the results, it is important to consider how difficult it is to properly arrange deliveries with an assortment of applications from various schools at CMU to address. The Admissions department at CMU strives to inform every student of their decision in a timely manner, but unfortunately it is not always successful. Decisions will arrive for everyone soon.

When can we see our decision online???

Well, mail came...nothing again.

called up the office. getting my decision mailed next monday =/

thingummywut - did you give them your name and they looked you up or something?

yea mine is being mailed next monday too i called yesterday...yippie more waiting
