oh yeah he's talking about laipai14159, and the poster above is laipi14159, so it must not be the same person

^^ he was being sarcastic.

Told you it was 50-50. =)

You're one of the very, very, very few people who are 1) OOS, and 2) didn't fulfill all the requirements for admission.

Quote:
the in-state chances are greatly underestimated
Do you mean that we're underestimating the difficulty of getting into Berkeley for in-state students? And that it can still be a reach even for students with over-involvement? (I'd agree with the latter.)
Just wanted to comment saying that I find it disturbing when I read this thread with people who have 2350+ on their SAT's and they are only given match (60%). Most of the time, its more like 90%.

tkd2009: you clearly don't know much about admissions. Cal, for one, does not weight the SAT that much. Notice that it considers GPA, rigor of course load, and essays to be "very important," whereas SAT is just "important."

http://cds.berkeley.edu/pdfs/PDF%20wBOOKMARKS%2006-07.pdf

As a result, Berkeley rejects many 2300+ scorers. In addition, a 90% = safety; Berkeley is a safety for no one. A safety is one that it would be nearly impossible to be rejected at, and that's clearly not the case with people who have just a high SAT score -- not to mention that a school with a near 1-in-5 acceptance rate is definitely not safe enough. You'd want to go for schools that have much higher acceptance rates for safeties; they're safer (which is the whole point of a safety).

Lastly, those who only get "match" for 2350s have such for a reason -- they could be OOS (it's very difficult to be considered a match for an OOSer), or they could have a weak GPA, or they could be applying to very competitive major, or they could have an overall mediocre application (minus the SAT). Berkeley's admissions are much, much more dynamic and flexible than people like you think.

i applied to Haas, undeclared
I moved to california from singapore in december 2006, and im a senior in high school this year, so its kinda wierd to judge my GPA...

btw im a resident(: so instate!!

GPA(unweighted, because weightage is not a concept in Spore) : 3.67
UC GPA: 4.0 (no weightage sophomore year even though the courseload was HARD)
*VERY competitive private school in singapore

A lot of APs, around 9 now (in 2 semesters)

SAT scores: 2160 total, 690 WR, 720 CR, 750 M

12th grade
Founder and prez Gyan Club (going to be expanded to whole district next year, hopefully)
(its a non-profit tutoring business that i started. we basically tutor local kids at 11bucks an hour and we use all our profits to sponsor street children in india. its like a direct relationship between each tutor and kid, and we currently sponsor around 21.tons of groundwork and promotions, but twas all SO worth it(: one of my essays is about this, only its kind of more about helping poor children and education but this is one of the main aspects of what i did to help.)

Youth Action Team Prez
(so the youth action team is a board of highschool students interviewed and selected to organize events that help the community remain drug free etc. its technically a job and everyone else gets paid 10.40 per hour for doing stuff like putting up POSTERS, but sadly enough i dont have a work visa so im doing it for the experience and the community service. i'll basically have like 400h at the end of the year, because we have so many all day events and stuff. really great people and fun experience. my boss wrote a stellar letter of rec for me, so YAY in case of scholarships)

Smile club vice prez

CSF(no idea if this has an impact)

other classes:
french 3 at local community college B:’(
French 4/5 at local community college (going on right now)
physics 3A over summer at UCI (my prof invited me to be his research assistant)A

lol, I was also being sarcastic

bumppp, guys please chance me!

I know I have very slim chances, but I just want to know what you guys would think about my chances to Berkeley.

Applied for Latin American Studies.

•CA Resident / Asian American
•GPA: 3.4UW/3.6W (approximates)
•Rank: School doesn’t rank
•Very competitive Public school (No.1 in District, one of the 21 Public Elites according to Newsweek)
•Class size: ~550

•SAT: 2060 (650 M, 800 W (12 essay), 610 CR)
•SAT 2: Spanish Language: 760
U.S. History: 650

EC’s:

•Aid for Africa (11-12): Publicist. I was elected as a Publicist when the club first started in my Junior year. I am responsible for creating club flyers, planning for the Club Fair and other fundraising events, and creating designs for club t-shirts.
•Amnesty International (11-12): Member.
•Church Homeless Ministry (11-12): Volunteer. I have multiple responsibilities, including tables/chairs preparation, food distribution, serving coffee, and singing in the choir.
•City's Open Space Nature Preserve (Summer 2006): Volunteer. I mainly worked on trail maintenance and administrative work.
•Tutoring (9): I tutored elementary kids around my neighborhood in Guatemala.
•Soccer instructor (9): I taught soccer to elementary kids around my neighborhood in Guatemala.

Awards:

•Principal’s Honor Roll

Recs:

•Counselor –good. I know her very well.
•English teacher – good. Had her for junior year and have her now too. She knows me well too, academically and personally.

•I lived in Guatemala for about 14 years. I moved to the U.S. for 10th grade. I realized that my current school’s curriculum is way harder/stronger than that of the school I attended back in Guatemala. Although not a straight A’s student, I tried my best to pull a decent GPA while adapting to my new life in the US.

•My essay reflects my experiences during my life in Guatemala and ties with how I chose and want to pursue Latin American Studies in Berkeley. My teachers and Counselor said it was a unique essay. I hope the essay will be the "hook" of my application, since anything else besides it is not that stellar.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

I can't edit for some odd reason. Correction with GPA:
3.4uw/3.65W. I am not sure if these are really correct.
I will verify with GC tomorrow.

rgal: it's kinda hard to tell w/ weird GPA, but I'd probably put you at a low match. Avg. UCB GPA is like a 3.94 though, so that's kinda a disadvantage. Everything else looks great though. btw, I love the Gyan Club idea, I certainly hope that sticks out to admissions officers!

kevster: Reach with that GPA. And your awards/ECs don't really stand out. But it does sound like you would contribute to the diversity of the university and such, and you have succeeded despite language barriers, etc., so hopefully the adcom realizes that. Strictly stat-wise though, you're a reach, but a great essay could bring that to a match. Good luck!

Yeah, I will need (seriously) A LOT of luck! Thanks for the response.

thank you vc08! is the avg GPA UC GPA or um normal GPA, because my UC GPA is 4.0(: thanks so much for chancing me, i really appriciate it!

Well, since I didn't get Regents and am now second-guessing my ability to get into Berkeley, could you guys chance me? Ugh, I feel horrible right now.

Copied & pasted from my earlier chance thread, with some corrections and additions.

Asian female in an international school
No school ranking, but probably top 5%.
UCGPA: Something around 4.5
GPA: (my school doesn't do weighting)
3.97 Freshman - Junior (EDIT: The poor grades were from band and PE - I'm not sure which schools, if any, take those out of consideration. If not for those A-s, I would have a 4.0)
4.0 Sophomore - Junior

SAT: CR: 750 (=/) Math: 800 Writing: 800, Essay: 12 (1550/2350)
PSAT: 226
SAT II: USH: 800 Mol. Bio: 780

APs
Sophomore: APUSH - 5
Junior: AP Bio - 5, AP Stats - 5, AP Lang - 5, AP Psych - 5
Senior: AP Lit, AP Econ (micro and macro), AP Calc BC, AP Euro
OVERALL: 9 AP classes, 10 exams.

ECs (DOOM):
Founded humanitarian/medical club collaborating with Operation Smile. We are working towards weekly/monthly hospital volunteer trips locally in China.
Habitat for Humanity (4 years) - I went on a weeklong trip to the Philippines to build houses and am a member of the club, so I do fund-raising and projects.
Class Senator in Junior year
Elementary math tutor
AP US history tutor
Amnesty International - 9-10 grade
Jazz band - 9-10 grade
Concert band - 9-10 grade
Hospital Volunteer work over the summers

Overall community service should be 250+ hours. This is possibly my only real passion, and it's a pity that my ECs don't show any of that.

Languages: Bilingual Chinese (Mandarin) and English. Three years of French.

^^You would definitely be in if you were in-state. International is harder but you have a great shot. I can't emphasize enough how much of a crapshoot regents is.

4 Kids from my school: MIT, Stanford, Princeton, Yale--> only one got the regents interview (MIT) and he did not advance to actually getting the scholarship.

Well, for my additional info essay, I tried to clarify my situation (more eloquently, I hope, than I'm going to do here!)

My parents live in California, coming to Shanghai to visit when they can; we've been paying taxes there for 16 years; my permanent address is in Burlingame; I spent 14 years there, and attended public schools for elementary and middle school; my dad's job is in California; and I visit every break. The only reason I'm in Shanghai is because of school; my parents wanted me to know what it was like to live and go to school overseas, so I could get a different perspective and be more well-rounded.

I'm really hoping they can consider me in-state even though I'm not graduating from a California high school.

Thanks very much for chancing me. I realize it is, to some extent, random once you've got above a certain GPA/test score; it's still disappointing though. Money wasn't the issue; having a faculty sponsor/mentor was the real highlight of that scholarship.

Does anyone else have any opinions?

rgal: your GPA is slightly weak, though the rest is strong. I'd say slight reach (50-50).

kevster1001: it's a reach, largely because of your GPA. However, you do have a shot, since the rest of your application is good.

aninvertedlove: you should know by know whether they'll consider you in-state. If you're in-state, I'd say match, as your application is strong (though your ECs are spread a bit thin). If you're OOS or international, then it's a reach.

thank you vc08! is the avg GPA UC GPA or um normal GPA, because my UC GPA is 4.0(: thanks so much for chancing me, i really appriciate it!
I believe vc08 is talking about UW GPA there. Average W GPA is a 4.3.

When we'd asked some people who worked at admissions at Berkeley over the summer, they said that it seemed likely I'd be considered in-state. Should there be any indication whether I've been considered in-state? I received the Regents offer from UCLA and I saw on the UC website that one of the requirements for the UCLA Regents is residency for California -- unless that's outdated information. I should email them...

^^ no, you're right. UCLA Regents requires residency. The reason I say that you should know is that you have to put info on that on the application.

Hi, i just wanted to see what are my chances

male filipino-chinese heritage
1st generation immigrant (came to the US 4 years ago)
ranked 12 (out of 693)
UCGPA: about 4.4-4.6
GPA: 4.47
UGPA: 3.933
SAT: CR: 630 Math: 700 Writing: 630, Essay: 10
SAT II: chem: 760 mathII: 730 ush:790

APs
Sophomore: ap art history: 4
Junior: AP psychology - 5, AP chemistry - 5, AP USH - 5
Senior: (tests not schedule) ap lit, physics C mech and E/M, Calc BC, Stats, US Gov, macro, possibly AP Euro, ap comp sci

senior schedule: calc, physics mech, stats, gov/econ, lit

ECs:
president of interact club (treasurer during junior year, member for 3 years)
co-founded school-wide recycling program for bottles and cans (money donated to both international and local charity)
NHS member
Red cross club member
Loc. community volunteer

as you may notice, its not very long, but its partly my fault since i dont keep log of my hours [i enjoy volunteering so much that i beleive that keeping logs of how much i've volunteered defeats the purpose of doing so without rewards ( :]

small quirks about myself: very knowledgable with regards to computer diagnosis and repair, basic knowledge of .net and c++ (haven't have time to study), i dont play sports (though i am proficient with badminton), from a family of low-income immigrants

and on a side note i got a letter asking to schedule an interview for a regent scholarship, what does that mean for me?
