The Official Feb. 9th Thread

mika i agree....

i can't believe how many ppl thought the math was easy. i guessed on so many =(

The science was weird...I'd never had much trouble with time before and today it was really tight. Of course, it didn't help that the test official was standing right next to my desk ("Five minutes...four and a half minutes...four minutes...three and a half minutes...three...you've got forty-five seconds, folks...thirty seconds...").

reading and science are usually my best, but i thought they were really hard here.. math/english were easy

This was my first time taking the ACT.

I thought the English was incredibly easy, and I finished comfortably. I would be surprised if I got lower than a 32, and that's being modest. I'm expecting a 34 atleast.

Math..My weakest subject. But, I probably got a mid 20 on it. I didn't think it was that bad, really, but I did have to put down C for the last 5 due to being pressed for time.

Reading went well. I would be surprised if it was lower than a 28, but I feel I got a 30+. I was pressed for time on this one, too, but I did manage to actually finish.

Science was solid. I feel the same way about Science as I do the Reading portion. I finished this one comfortably, however.

The writing went well, too. I completely filled the first page, and had about 3 lines left on the second page. I think I used good diction and syntax, and I felt my tone was present in my writing. I'd say a 9 at the lowest because I don't know if mine was that long in comparison to others and I've heard that the length of your essay is important in terms of how it's scored. But, as for the writing itself..I thought I did really well.

In all, I'm hoping for a 28+ on my composite and a 10+ on writing.

I'll take the ACT three more times, but I feel very good about how I did for the first time.

Can you check scores online at actstudent.org in a couple of weeks? I heard you could, but I'm not sure.

can we talk about the problems?

also for writing, is it okay that i only made 2 points instead of 3?

when you run out of time, do you guys usually bubble A or C for the rest of the questions?

I think making 2 points is fine as long as those two were solid and the rest of your essay was good (no serious grammatical errors, etc)
This is completely weird, but I would grid C for SAT and A/F for ACT...

English: waaaaaay solid. 36 would not be a surprise
Reading: 32-34
Math: eh...30 or above. it was okay.
Science: 30 or above. Science makes me feel cozy inside.

There was one question on the Science which didn't give the correct answer as an option...but I guess I can't even talk about it. oh well.

I was glad I had a lot to say on the essay topic, though!

Hopefully I am DONE with major non-AP standardized tests FOREVER, as a junior! yeah!

lol i hated the essay, could say anything and first 5 mins i just sat there trying to write a catchy first sentence. I had strong position but organization sucked

What was the essay topic?

should school newspapers only write about positive events since the school is supporting it or should it talk about the negative issues as well?

I said allowing students to only write about the positives is a violation of freedom speech, impedes on their education as writers since they would only learn how to write about good things and not bad (also how it prevents them from learning investigative journalism techniques), and how allowing the writers to write about all subjects would make the administrators aware of otherwise subliminal negatives in their school. (A reason for admins to allow negative writing).

I hope it was ok. I only wrote 2 pages + 3 lines in the next page.

i worte that it steps on freedom of speach, sets bad example and creates a journalism extinction

hmmm basically mine was the same: First Amendment, compromises the "training" school provides to journalists, censoring not only the staff but also the people whom they interview, discouraging improvements in school structure

Did anyone else have a very lenient moderator? Sometimes they're really strict, while in other cases...well, anyway, I ended up breaking one of the ACT rules...

I used a mechanical pencil. ;)

Haha my moderator was so mean! I almost got kicked out from the test because she became very suspicious on me!

[To be fair, I was actually cheating...I was still bubbling on the answer sheet after time was up.]

Our lady was strict yet lazy....strange combination...didnt even check the calculators or electronic devices even as she read that she should outloud

Mine was perfect. Nice, efficient, and only called out when 5 minutes were left.

Mine was pretty good too ... haha a bunch of us were sick so she came around with kleenex on an occasional basis.

I didn't feel like blowing my nose before the test but it's funny how as soon as the test started, my nose started running! It was annoying that I had to use up 5 sec. at a time to blow my nose...

My moderator was ok. He kept coming to me and telling me to put my calc. down on the desk, but I have this habit of holding my calc. up with I use it. And the person in front of me kept turning around to give me a look and I was like, "Dood. I can't help it if I have to blow my nose. Get over it."

But yeah, it's my last time taking the ACTs so it's all good. I just want to know my score!!

He kept coming to me and telling me to put my calc. down on the desk, but I have this habit of holding my calc. up with I use it.

I was holding mine in my left hand basically the entire math section.
