The official Germany thread for the class of 2013

I paid the fee for like 4 colleges and applied to 16…so yes, I used fee waivers and no college denied them.

@Der Deutsche Mann: What’s your income bracket? I could probably get a lot of financial aid, but I could never proof that $50 would hurt my family, but $500 do.

Ja Deutschland!

Anyone here from Stuttgart?

thnx DerDeutscheMann
what did u do for these waivers and did u say ur applying to 16 colleges so thats the reason or…?

i would recommend applying to a lot of colleges if you require big amounts of FA. it’s a crapshoot for internationals anyways and asking for FA really hurt you this year.
so, one’s going to grinnell, one’s heading to bennington, and i’ll attend the u of chicago in the fall.
what i learned from this year: study for your SATs/ACTs. a bunch of students from my school with better grades got rejected (most likely) because of their weaker SATs.

SATs are very important obviously, but do not underestimate the power of a convincing personal interview.

@mauerblume&luluzug:
I checked the colleges’ websites to find out if they have an official wee faiver request form or if they accept a standardized fee waiver like NACAC.
It would not have been a struggle for my family to come up with one or two application fees, but 16 was definetly too much, so I just had to take the rist and apply to almost every school with a fee waiver, signed and approved by my guidance counselor who confirms financial hardship. After I sent all my applications out, I realized that my family’s income was a little bit too high for the NACAC fee waiver. Anyway all colleges accepted it. The thing is that the colleges do not know about your financial situation until they get the FinAid application from you.

I have been underestimating those ever since I read a statement from our head of admissions. She said that interviews barely every influence admission decisions. The college conducts interviews anyway because they found that interviews help their yield rate - they establish a personal connection between the applicant and the college, and thus the applicant is more likely to enroll if accepted.

The significance of interviews might vary among college, but I doubt that most colleges sincerely care about your performance in an interview. (But they might be interested in whether or not you request an interview to find out how sincerely interested you are in their institution.) Especially considering that interviews are conducted by alumni who are most likely unfamiliar with your major and might have been out of touch with the college for decades.

Hi Leute.

Warst du an ner internationalen Schule?
Kenne außer mir(persönlich) keinen, der sich an US Unis bewribt!;)

DDR - dont you feel dishonest that others in your situation (with an income higher than the NACAC ) go on struggle and honestly pay the fees?

sowhat, i think we are friends on facebook, if your initials are M.M.
ich war an einem normalen deutschen gymnasium und war leider nicht bei den april overnights.

I applied to 9 colleges, two were free to apply to, got four fee waivers and I payed the rest of the application fees. It was doable, still a lot of money.

Hi Silence.
Would you share where you`re gonna go?
Why have you chosen to study abroad?

I just wanted to say that Colleges are willing to waive the application fee if you send in a fee waiver. People who struggle to pay all those fees should always use a fee waiver even if they are over the NACAC limit. And no, I dont feel dishonest at all because its not like if they are waiving my application fee therefor cant waive it for another.

Debatable, if you would like to…:)

thank your for replying, u help a lot!
i’d like to u ask u about one Austrian college since i cannot find any Austrian thread here.
do u know anything about Fachhochschule Vienna Neustadt and its program International Accounting and Finance?
thank you

I’m going to Grinnell, although I still have my doubts that I’m gonna stay there 4 years.
At this point the only reason, why I’m going abroad is that I just want to know what’s it gonna be like and that in Germany I’d probably have to wait a year or two to study Psychology, because of the NC.
Originally I wanted to study Criminology, but Grinnell doesn’t offer Criminology so that’s off the list. I dunno I’m also kinda bored of Germany at this point so I guess I need to see something new.

@Silence: Yeah, I get that. Same with me…
It’s just the perfect time to try something new.
