I can’t imagine what it’s like, being one of the students there

Hahaha it’s really not that bad! And we just got ranked top ten schools in the state lmao. I think people are just really used to getting away with stuff.

lol the school next to me is 23 in the country…but we’re 300 :sob:

Ugh that sucks! I’m sure Hill will be a nice change!

If you had asked me last year, I would have been enraged by these kids. But I learned more over the year. I would bet on 70% chance or more that their parents are full of such prejudice. The moment you are born into this world, you find much about you has already been determined - by the simple fortune / misfortune of having good/bad parents. Not everyone is so lucky as you, me or most here for that matter.

For the hate crimes commited by the underaged, their parents must be required to attend the same probation and education alongside.

I am really concerned about what is going on in America. Democracy cannot be maintained on hate, but America is the last defender for democracy. Americans do not know how much the world expects of them.

Completely agree.

In 6th grade I was neighbors with a girl who was very racist and homophobic (not an accusation I’d throw around lightly) - the final straw was when she started insulting one of my close friends for being “gross because her skin is so dark” and demanding to the school admin that she switch classes because a girl in her homeroom was gay and that made her feel unsafe. I got annoyed and called her a racist bit*h in front of our whole gym class (like 50 ppl). She knew she would get in trouble if the whole situation came out so ran to the principal and made up a story about me, the kid she insulted, and one of our other neighbors, saying we were bullying her for the past few months.

It was all completely lies, but the admin didn’t know who to believe so nobody got in trouble. Her parents rushed to corroborate her lie and her almost 7 foot tall dad went and yelled at the other kid she was accusing for “disrespecting his daughter”. A few years later the girl’s younger sister got in trouble for similar comments and once again her parents rushed to defend her. 11 year olds don’t say stuff like that unless they’re hearing it at home. It’s completely unacceptable - but also a product of what they were raised to believe.

This is actually one of the reasons my parents gave me a couple years ago when they refused to send me to a junior boarding, and I am sure many Korean parents would share this sentiment: “You need to receive more ‘meal-table education’ from us so that you become a human being (as opposed to a beast) first.” Korean parents use meal sitting (usually dinner, sometimes breakfast too) to teach virtues and values. (Korean Harkness Table??) I once read from somewhere (I don’t know if true) that one reason many New Yorkers prefer sending their children to Trinities and Daltons to Andovers or Grotons has to do with similar reason.

That’s really interesting! I’d never heard of it phrased like that before but it makes sense.

I think it totally depends, some areas are Andover territory and others are Exeter territory.

Same with us British. My dad had me setting the table at 4 years old, British people love dinner.

Interesting. What is considered Andover country vs Exeter country? Somehow I have the impression that Exeter is a bigger name overseas and Andover is bigger in the US. I could be wrong though.

Exeter is indeed bigger Internationally, and Andover is bigger domestically, but it really depends on proximity. Towns closer to Exeter are Exeter territory, while the same is true for Andover. Also, if a large concentration of kids have gone to Exeter from a certain area (such as Deerfield and Darien County, CT) then that are will tend to be Big Red Country.

Yeah my town is neither - exeter may have more brand recognition among areas unfamiliar w bs tho, but honestly idk.

How come Deerfield favors Exeter? Shouldn’t they favor the local school?

Darien is a town in CT, not a county. It’s in the County of Fairfield, which also includes the towns of New Canaan and Greenwich among many other collectives of extreme wealth and privilege.

I was just given access to my HS’s naviance account with no direction of what we’re supposed to do with it beyond taking a ‘career prospect’ survey that told me exactly what I expected it would. I’ve seen this program mentioned on CC with regard to college matriculation. Anyone know how I am supposed to use this?
